What a beautiful game this was... This was my high school favorite, and over the years it remained my favorite game. The variation in levels. The music, the boss fights the weapons, what a masterpiece this game was.

To this day, i am fascinated by the level of detail for all the original Painkiller maps. Not even surprised since the designs came straight from Maya or 3D Max, which are basically the top notch modeling art softwares. The geometry really knows no limit in this game, creates very nice visuals along with the engine Painkiller runs on.
Most games graphics back then were made in Max, Maya, or comparable software. Most still are, although game graphics have become at lot less reliant on pure geometry for detail. I think Painkiller's high detail architectural look is more a result of art direction following real world architectural design(which usually have a lot of repeating ornamental details made from simple materials) and the rendering technology at the time being mostly limited to static models affected by baked direct lighting. The game also had to be visually impressive as a way to advertise their proprietary game engine, which properly influenced their choice of style as well. Finally, the game was released at the dawn of post processing and advanced shaders and is one of the last high budget games to focus solely on geometry for detailing before game graphics moved on to advanced material rendering, dynamic lighting and post processing stacks.
I think it has to do with the art direction , asthetic , architecture etc . That is the secret , those can stand the test of time much more then the pure actual graphics . The game still holds up visually bc of those imo .Look at POP games as well for an example , the environments of those games are still stunning bc of the same reasons .

The definition of atmosphere. This was the demo level (back when demos where a thing). Truly loved the vibe and gameplay.
I remember I got the demo in a magazine. Played it on the family PC. They truly nailed the coastal atmosphere.

based on the enemies in this level, i believe that the city fell into anarchy after a despotic leader took control of the city.

I dreamt one with an actual gull sound effect after this one, spooked the dreaming me. Sound isn't usually very prominent.
