i was never a huge fan of the repetitive nature of the original game, but i remember playing this level all those years ago and falling in love with the ambiance and design. Absolutely brilliant....lost monastery in the middle of a dead sea. Food for the imagination ;)
Ironic you call Painkiller repetitive when it has the most unique and varying levels level to level in any game. Almost no enemy is ever repeated and each level is traversed differently and feels different. The only repetitive thing is the guns since you can only have so many.
+blueshit199 Yes...I also liked the idea that this monastery was once holy, but corrupted by some evil force that has its sanctuary below the monastery in the cliffs where the unholy altar was...and now it lies on the portal to Hell...
I liked to clear this level and then take a slow walk through it, as if exploring. Even the small church that seemed strangely complex and big on the inside than it seemed on the outside. If some designer of this level just happened to take a peek at this video - thanks :)
this is the most beautiful level in the game. the decaying ruins of a catholic monastery, probably after being ransacked by vikings in the early medieval times, the feeling of entropy, a reminder that time will consume everything. the music lamenting past glory of this place, now standing atop the entryway to Hell itself, guarded by former men of God who had long since lost their faith, much like Daniel did
Not ransacked by Vikings but by evil force that spread from Hell portal beneath monastery, it corupted a few first inhabitants whom then began to worship this evil force in a secret altar near the portal...
No one is to say what became of this place. One thing is for sure: this monastery is not holy anymore. Some evil force, or someone, corrupted it. Goes to show no matter how holy you can be, you’re still a mere human. Damn I love this game.
Sadly given the plot and place in the game. Every level is most likely just a manifestation symbolizing the actual thing. Like nightmares shaped after your past trauma. They say in the cutscenes these are all demons. So the locations and beings most likely have just taken this shape. Still correct though. Nothing truly is holy. So nothing is guaranteed to protect your form what you are.
this monastery is so isolated, trapped on a tiny rock in the middle of the sea, who's to say this place wasn't used as a dumping ground for plague victims, or people who simply weren't wanted anymore? who's to say the isolation didn't cause the monks to betray their vows and take up a darker path?
If you played this level, at the end of it, there is a secret shrine with altar under the cliffs, exit pentagram is nearby, I think, that from this place the evil spreads and corrupts the minds, bodies and souls of the once holy order of the monks as the monastery was build as the seal upon the gate to Hell to contain its evil... best level of the game and one of the best of all levels from games I have played.
I heard this song when I was... 14? 15? I'm 26 now. This song still bring me to tears, this is still the song I want played at the end of my age, hopefully thousands of years from now. But even if not so, even if I will suffer a ordinary age... This song... This melody, I know it would put my tired, tortured and bitter fucking soul to rest. I wish I knew who composed this. I'd shake his/her hand, with tears in my eyes.
We need an actual high quality sequel, an Painkiller 2 . The original with its expansion and Overdose at most are the best , the others are so fan made , with reused assets and bugs , they are not kinda proper Pk games , not in quality thats for sure , kinda semi-canon at least in my mind even if that but i did enjoyed the ones i played .

This level is different. In this one you wanted to stay after you killed all and everything.
thats EXACTLY what I was thinking
unfortunately after killing all enemies there is no way up from the dungeons ;)
Damn i am playing it rn and this is exactly what i was thinking.
