I just received my Anvil Rose collaboration, Jim Green Barefoot Trooper boots! I got them weather proofed with Jim Green leather balm, just before we got about ten inches of snow her in Vandalia, Illinois and the world froze solid! These have proved themselves to be outstanding winter boots! The additional height and ankle support makes for excellent navigation of icy terrain! I'm 61 and falling on my head, on ice while walking the dog is not a high priority! Thanks again and I've already ordered my second pair of Barefoot Troopers!
Its rather resource intensive to make leather. There's lots of chemical processing that created hazardous waste, and the cattle industry takes up an insane amount of land and water use. I think the number I saw was that a leather good needs to last about 5x as long to break even compared to a synthetic replacement, but that depends on several factors. That's doable but its much closer than you would think!
@ leather easily lasts more than 5x the lifespan of pleather, the break-in perios for leather is often the same as the whole lifespan of pleather. Also do you consider the fact that when plastic is done being used it sits in landfills instead of decomposing?
Man I love your work ethic it's such a breath of fresh air compared to corporate greed. I love that you're encouraging competition to improve whats available as a whole. very wholesome channel. I just purchased a pair of African Ranger I can't for them to arrive in December.
I know the barefoot videos don’t do the best on your channels but there’s a brand called “Feiyue” that makes canvas, rubber toe-capped shoes for $35. They’re technically not barefoot but they are thin soled and I’m wondering how well they’re built being only $35.
I’ve seen lots of Feiyue. They have thicker soles with some squish and not foot shaped so they aren’t very barefoot. I’m not a fan of the fit and feel. That said, for the price, they are decent enough. I can’t see how you would be disappointed for only $35.
I had some one I did Shaolin Kung Fu. We saw them on Monks and bought them. When a monk came to visit our school they explained it was because they were cheap in china and flexible… we quit wearing them shortly after.
I bought the boot breaker insoles to wear in a pair of NOS Corcoran Jump Boots from the 1990’s. They are perfect solution for adding just a little bit of extra comfort. Thanks for offering them.
The big key for me is Bearfoot makes shoes in large sizes. It took me darn near a year and a half with over 20 pairs of shoes ordered and returned until I found Bearfoot that fit for lifting. They were so good feeling I had hoped they would make them for everyday use with a longer lasting sole for walking on concrete and parking lots, and now I own 5 pairs of Ursa's and one Oso for daily use. Everyone else just stops too small!
I've never seen a boot with a bigger discrepancy between how great they look on foot and how awful they look in hand. Definitely curious about where they go with these.
Got the African Troopers on Saturday, they are so nice and the quality is top notch. I’m just waiting to get them coated with otter wax before I wear them. Going up a half size was a great recommendation!
that's cool it's not just a black suede version of their original boot because that's what i thought it was at first. if i didnt already have my Jim Green barefoots i'd probably try out a pair of Bearfoot boots one day.
I’d recommend 2 pairs anyway, at least here. Florida’s humidity takes a toll on my Jim green, I have to maintain it much more regularly. A day in between wears can give it the airing out and drying it needs
Great video. It would be cool to see some more content on harder use boots like Truman, Frank's, Viberg. And even some stuff like Urban Wolf Club, who are putting out boots for $150 out of Mexico. Love your stuff man, you turned me onto the footwear that saved my feet from constant pain. Turns out, the 55 last in PNW boots is exactly what I needed.
I hope there will be GEA video as well. I got a pair of Phenix, they are great. Much More of a heavy build than true barefoot but great flat shoes. They have 3 lines, glued, side stitched and stichdown with pricess reflecting it. I heel it would fit the channel
The African ranger is a great boot. Sadly I couldn’t keep my pair. The width wasn’t enough for me. Will they be making a wider option? Great work either way. It’s a great looking boot.
Weston, just wanted to let you know the African Troopers have shipped. I was not part of the original order but just got notified with a USPS tracking number this morning. I wanted to confirm that they were part of the Game Ranger giveaway before I ordered a pair. Been rotating two pair of barefoot Rangers since spring and only wear barefoot boots now. That see-through Livewire is a cool knife. I had to get one when it showed up in my inbox from Blade HQ.
They look like my Marsell Sancrispa's. Someday I'd like to see a pair of Marsell cut in half; they are my favorite shoes and I'm curious if they are worth what they cost. What is certain is that they last several years and now I am practically collecting them.
@@Jared-Kreate That would be the dream. I have wee (and wide) feet. The smallest men's size is still too generous. Barefoot shoes are great and there's lots of selection, but quality leather is tricky to find, as is a lace up boot that is both rugged (practical) but also really nice, like the African Trooper. It has that DM vibe. Wear it camping. Wear it with a dress at work. THAT is the rare and magical combination.
@@bonespur2728 There is still variability in foot size, so the extra space is relative to your foot. We still want a nice fit in the heel and mid foot, with an anatomical toebox to not squish our toes.
How does the width compare to Jim Green BAR? I absolutely love mine from the original drop but wish they were a tad wider. Almost bought bearfoot Bruin but then you did the collab and I bought the Jim Greens immediately.
You should maybe check out footwear by footskins. They make a moccasin boot here in the USA, but I suppose the only concern would be that the only options are a canoe sole ( a rough out leather cap ) and a rubber outsole that appears to be a slipper type of cupped outsole.
Great video and interesting boot! I don't quite understand how leatherbacked suede makes sense. Is it really cheaper to buy a thin leather AND a piece of suede than to just buy leather and use it rough-out? I think that should breathe better too...
I've had my pair of Bruins for 5 months. Some of the stitching was cut up as soon as they arrived. Then the fake leather insoles started to come apart. And today I noticed that there was a hole in the tip of my left boot that I can stick my fingers in to feel my toes. I'm not even hard on them, I work in a grocery store. I wouldn't recommend them.
Why are dressed up boots with normal toe boxes, barefoot boots? A good boot for a suit, room for the dogs, and not being barefoot is to me, an unknown.
I appreciate the craftmanship and creative process, I'm just not feeling these, maybe its the profile or the bunched up gusseted tongue. Not saying is a bad boot but I tried wearing Vibram five fingers and just couldn't get used to the feel, guess I wasn't walking 'right' in them. Long as folks are working and they're made right.
I can attest from firsthand experience that Bearfoot Bruin quality is sketch. Missing rows of stitching and not put together like the one that were dissected on other vid.

As someone who wears barefoot shoes almost exclusively, I have to say these look like shit. They look like they were made by a Cro-Magnon. Then the guy died & was preserved in a glacier, then was rediscovered wearing this pitiful footwear when the ice thawed out. Seriously…

Leather is a lot more of a sustainable material than plastic.
Exactly, I really struggle to see how these shoes and boots that are 100% plastic made overseas and disposable are better for the environment.
