An accountant doesn't "need" a PNW boot. You may want them, but don't need them for work. I own Thursdays, a few PNW, Russels, old Tony Lama Black Labels, etc. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Thursdays, especially for dressier styles.

Oil field, gas compression and ships engineer. Retired from paid work. I have a high arch and like a lot of ankle support. I tried to buy "cheap work boots". After four pair, from four brands (Rocky, Carolina, Thorogood, Danner) I gave up. They literally hurt just standing in them. I tried a pair of JK OTs that were in stock. One and done. The JKs fit right out of the box. That alone was worth an extra Benjamin. The JKs were on sale, so they were pretty decent as far as price. The break in for the OT was pretty easy for a PNW boot. I wear Thursdays for dress. Thursdays need no break in. They are wonderful boots for what they are. I'm a fan. At the end of the day I wear Russel Oneida Moccasins. The most expensive slippers I have ever owned. Fit is an issue with all of them. I wear a 7.5EEE from one company, and a 9D from another.
Great video! Hope this spreads. My boot journey mainly happened based off of the YT videos I've watched. If I could go back, I'd try and limit myself to 1 pair of boots every 6 months or a year. You'd then have a better idea on how the boot fits and break in. Example, I have two pairs of Red Wing IR boots, now that I just tried Parkhurst they make my IR's seem useless. Both are great but now I'm somewhat stuck with $500+ of boots I'm not really going to wear often. Also, wearing boots is not like wearing tennis shoes. Can you say boots are comfortable, yes. But there boots not tennis shoes. Thanks for the video and letting me vent a bit. God bless you as well.
Great video man, you and I speak the same language. PNW boots are a waste of time and money if you’re not in them everyday. I totally agree, you need a boot that serves a purpose and not all folks need a $700 boot for the occasional use. Keep up the great content brother, subscribed.

Very good to keep this in perspective. I think the appeal of Nicks and such for casual fashion users is that when you learn the way high quality footwear is made, you begin to respect them simply for their craftsmanship. Its like owning a Ford Mustang. Nobody needs a car that has a 4 second 0-60, but people appreciate the engineering and the visceral experience of using it. The problem is when it becomes like the people who trick themselves into thinking they need to own a pickup truck when they are a suburban soccer mom who loads the bed less than once a year. Companies want to sell you this fantasy self that if you own this product you can be this certain type of person.
I agree on alot he said in the video. Keep an open mind on what is realistic for you in terms of need and use. I know for me (the average everyday non blue collar worker) will probably only need ONE pnw boot in my entire lifetime. Companies like Jim green and Thursday meet my needs just fine without breaking the bank.
Good video. Good message. 👍 If you genuinely want that top-tier pair of boots, then go for it. Wear what you want and enjoy it. 100%. But, that being said, take some time to think about it. Make sure it's what you really want. And know that, depending on what you do for a living, a middle-of-the-road boot may last you for as long as you could possibly want. I own a pair of Thursday Captains and work as a teacher. I've had the boots for 4 or 5 years and wear them about 70% of the time, and i often walk to work (a 20-minute walk). I've had them resoled once, and the boots are still in great shape; about once a week, I'll get a compliment on them. Recently, i decided to get a 2nd pair of boots, and i toyed with the idea of getting a pair of Vibergs. I was seriously considering it but decided not to. They're beautiful, great boots, and I'd _love_ to have a pair, but i decided that for me, personally, i couldn't justify the price. Instead, I got a pair of service boots from Canada West (a company out of Winnipeg, MB). In terms of construction quality, they can't compare with a pair of Vibergs, but, for me, I suspect they'll do. (I say, "suspect" because I just got them. I haven't even broken them in yet). And in terms of style/aesthetic, they're not bad at all. Again, they're no Vibergs, but they caught my eye. So, anyway, are the boots magnificent in the same way that a pair of Vibergs are? No. But they meet my needs and wants, and I paid about 25% of what i would've otherwise paid for the Vibergs. So, if you want the expensive boots, then get them. In fact, I'll be looking at your feet with envy as you walk past. But just be sure before you buy. Get what makes sense for you.
I wore redwings, timberlands, rockrooster, and wolverine. I tried on thorogood but they didnt fit my feet well. Most of these channels talk about veg tan insoles and durability of it. I will be honest here. While i love the iron rangers, the veg tan footbed will warp overtime and is high maintenance. This is especially true for me who has really sweaty feet. The insole is slightly warped on the right foot becuase of my sweaty feet even with drying it and using shoe trees. There will also be built up mildew and mold as well if those leather boots don't air out fast enough. The best boot for me had foam inserts hence they dont warp easily with moisture, prevent mold, can be replaced when needed, and the footbed last longer because of it. More synthetic linings was also a benefit when wicking away sweat. The only thing that boot channels get right most of the time is the need of a leather heel counter. That is really the first thing that goes out on my boots.
@@ironrain1x Thorogoods never fit me well either so I feel you there. And that can definitely be a concern on some foot beds. My PNWs could last me 15 years if I take care of them, or more.
@@averyj.steele1074 I know of them and have watched videos on them but I have never owned a pair. I have heard very good things about them for the price point they come in at though. I have become a huge Jim Green fan. They make all of their styles on the zero-drop/barefoot last which has become my go-to boot style. Waiting for my 9th pair to be started in February.
Speaking of experience with “soft-tempered” leather. I had a pair of Jim Green Vellie’s that my pinkie-toe knuckle rubbed through and made a hole after a few months of wear. They’re roughout leather is too soft and too thin. This is the reason why I’m not buying their new PNW style boots, sadly.
@@LastNineBreaker dang man that’s stinks. I haven’t heard of that before on Jim greens but I will definitely keep an eye out for it on mine. The vellies are single lasted which might contribute to a certain degree. Their “heavy duty boots are all double lasted but that still shouldn’t have happened. Super unfortunate. Thanks for commenting. God Bless
You can have a celastic heel fail just from walking around, though. The arch support issue is an actual thing for people who NEED the arch support, though, that they WON'T get from the Thirsty Challenger and will hafta phase them out for higher quality things w' time after they realize that they CAN'T just wear Chuck's sneakers or e'en Captain boots out the bar on occasion anymore. I think the Boot Bros were mostly addressing the OT model of the JK as being marketed as same durability as JK Superduty while being a more disposable boot. So they were also comparing JK unfavorably to other companies in other areas, too, but I don't recall the whole discussion there, but yes, despite the fit issues, my OT boots will make fine clodhoppers once in awhile until I can get them rebuilt when they need a new outsole. They are in a better position than Teik or Dale for functionality discussion, but they also want to criticize Rose while refusing t' take a more definitive stance on WHAT is the best for each: 1 day ago I evaluate lots of things, but as far as your conversation here so far I'm evaluating absolutely nothing. Cuz I don't yet know what evaluation is being asked of me. Or what question you are asking yourself. But I'm pretty sure whatever the question is the answer isn't necessarily PNW only. So again, what is the exact question? I asked the same question TWICE about how exactly are the other GYW boots significantly better than Thirsty t' justify the price difference and if there were any quality work boots overall that aren't PNW and this is what I get in response? Cop out??? At least Rose, for all his faults, holds up different models of shoes; shows you the components and the price, and then gives a less wishy-washy opinion most the time? I don't know how many people buy crap boots because he gives the green light or if they just like t' see the band saw, butiIt's a simple enough format and has OVER A MILLION SUBSCRIBERS, so if anyone gonna give better info than him, better find a good gimmick that people wanna watch instead just criticize him, etc.
I don't think a GYWelt is much less flexible overall. I think the Grant Stone boots for SALE PRICE are typically a good find and I did have issue w' shoe trees prematurely deflating and deforming the poron in the Thirsty Prez boots, that which I would hope the leather insoles would hold up better in the closet under such circumstances t' remain better fit and LAST LONGER....
Steel shank kinda same issue as the arch support from before. Except fior wedge soles, REALLY gonna notice the lack o' support in very short time just taking a walk. Maybe your feet don't hurt so much now, but get back t' me in 5 - 10 yrs? I wore stupid sneakers too much until I was 30 and shoulda been wearing Big Boy shoes more often in my 20s, sure.
The Honda might also be the choice if you are doing something like cement work where they ruined in 3 months e'en if neigh WORN OUT, yes, we know. BUT what I am mostly sick of seeing is guys running around trying t' figure out which crappy pair of Wal-Fart or Amzn boots is THE BEST for under $100 when everything under $200 is likely shouldn't be produced for the NEEDS that guys who do REAL WORK or whatever NEED. That's why more of them probably SHOULD have something more like PNW boots e'en if only the hipsters can afford and still wanna argue that the Challenger JUST AS GOOD, etc. No, they're NOT the same thing.
@@Highland_Paddy thanks for watching and commenting man. I understand completely that some people need arch support. I have had Jks and the arch support didn’t hold up as well as Whites for me, on paper Jk specs beat Whites in practice the opposite. The best PNW boots are the ones that fit you the best if they don’t fit right they wont last as long. The leather was fine on my Jks the structure didn’t hold up as long. I only make it to a resole before I need a rebuild though. I believe Jk touched on this too some people will be the ones that need a rebuild annually due to whatever conditions. I unfortunately seem to be one of those.

God Bless
Really great video and informative also thanks 😊

They are in a better position than Teik or Dale for functionality discussion, but they also want to criticize Rose while refusing t' take a more definitive stance on WHAT is the best for each:

I evaluate lots of things, but as far as your conversation here so far I'm evaluating absolutely nothing.
But most people for everyday mundane actives don’t need it to walk around town for a couple hours. Everyone’s needs differ but I was just trying to cover a broad range of topics to be able to give advice and perspective to as many people as possible. Thanks for watching. God Bless
@@claytonblachly4031 dang man that’s unfortunate. I’m glad your whites are working well for you though I’ve never had a dedicated pair of whites work boots but the casual boots I’ve owned from them have been great. Thank you for commenting. God Bless.

Me too! Life is Boots...Boots is Life! 🤠 🐍
I have 2 pairs of boots for work and 1 pair of JK OT for hiking/fishing, as i got tired of the AZ desert tearing up $200 boots after 3 months.
I have two pair of Thorogood's moc toe and round toe. I work in both pair of those boots and one pair i have own since 2017 and i have used and abused them on construction sites. I also own two pair of Whites that I wear causually when I have extended periods of time off from work. I'm just an everyday blue collar guy wheather I''m at work or not.

Great video and informative! 👏 👏 👏
First time I’ve seen a guy with a spittoon on TH-cam.
I’m pretty fortunate that I fit a 12D in most American lasts. Thorogoods I’ve never been able to size properly. A 12D will not accommodate my instep. A 12EE is too wide , a 13D is too long.
@@Dukeofmamucas that funny because I actually have the same problem with Thorogood since they don’t make single E width. I can wear a 9EE and I can wear and 9.5D but neither fit correctly. Thanks for watching and commenting. God Bless

"Nothing negative but when you see..." sure sounds negative lol. I think people who are smart enough to watch reviews are really doing the right thing rather than just buying out of FOMO. You kind of lost me when you pulled out the thursday challengers, those seem like Thursday quality at a higher price for having the things you say most boots dont really need for the casual user. If you want Thursdays, just get the $200 ones because like you said they'll be more than enough for the casual user. But i think your overall message is good, be smart with your money, do your research and always be wary of the hype especially from people on the internet who are most likely trying to sell you something.
@@dc22193 I only brought out the challengers because I was giving people a lower price reference to something like the urban logger from nicks. I agree completely about the 200 dollars Thursday being an awesome choice for most people. It was all just for frame of reference and showing an array of options. Thanks for commenting. God Bless.

Great video and great points! I've felt the same way listening to a lot of videos. How can you review a product you've never actually used?
My favorite was when a reviewer said his 2 weeks wear was equivalent to 3 months wear for a normal person. He's an office worker. Must be one crazy office because I'm a steel mill worker. I tear stuff up quick because steel trumps leather every time.
