  • Relationship Football (also known as Functional Attack or Functional Play) is a playing style that relies much more on the interaction and joint creativity of players than on structured tactical formations.
This style of play demands a lot from players' ability to operate in very tight spaces and make quick decisions.

We play a lotta futsal here in SA especially in Brazil so thats way easier and more natural to understand a style like that...from our great players in history most of them came from futsal and our national teams used to play like that in the past.
We've also been in this dilemma in the 50s of playing our style or the european style and once we started playing using our strengths it worked...i think Diniz is right for trying to modernize our own style to make it work nowadays.

Very good analysis! It perfectly explains a fundamental thing that many other content creators have overlooked: the football culture of SA. We play a free-flowing, very technical football since birth. We're not the fastest nor the strongest, but we're for sure one of the most talented/technical. Relationism brings out the joy/courage to play in footballers, something intuitive to SA players who grew up like this. Diniz is always seen in Fluminense's backstage videos yelling "CORAGEM" which means Courage. He often adds "courage to make mistakes, but also courage to play". Dunno how successful this tactic is going to be, but it has certainly brought back the joy we were lacking in the past.

Also, very good point with futsal. Most of our schools have a futsal court, so we literally grow up playing in short, condensed conditions. The vast majority of very technical football players (like Marcelo) have started on futsal

Another thing thats very interesting to Diniz's relationism is that he's ALWAYS going to try to play out from defence. So he needs the GK and the CBs to also be technical players. He thrives against Gegenpress opponents because they move up to pressure the ball and, so, creates spaces for his forwards to receive the ball. If the opponents do not pressure the ball, then he has the liberty to retain possession and control the match (if he has the ball, he cant be attacked)

Just a correction, Dorival junior is definitely a positional type of coach.

What Fernando Diniz did at Fluminense isn’t Relationism, it is called Dizimismo in Brazil.
No other coach or manager does what Fernando Diniz did at Fluminense.
At Fluminense , players don’t have fixed positions or functions.

I think that Ned 1974 is the opposite, they were a relationist team (actually i am 100% sure)
