Losing by 1 or 2 would have been an acceptable result, but losing 5-1 in a group that could come down to goal differential is disastrous. Thats why it was shocking.
I don't think anyone expected them to win, but we at least expected them to put up a fight and maybe lose by 1/2 goals instead of 4 (Basically 5)

After the 2:0 i started feeling bad for scotland because their fans were so great. Just amazing fans and they didn't deserve getting such a beating. I hope scotland wins the next two matches and makes it. Not for the team, i give a damn about the scottish team. But i want the fans to remain as long as possible. As a German I have to pay ulimate respect to the Scottish fans though: Absolute class!
The “Tartan Army” have always had a great reputation. It’s a small country but they usually travel in huge numbers whenever they’re in a tournament. Also a very proud and patriotic nation too. They have a history of always letting down their fans and they did it again. No disgrace in losing to a top team like Germany but the way Scotland played was embarrassing.
Standing off Kroos and NOT even pressuring him ONE BIT and letting him pick his passes should have been obvious to the manager and the players that was only going to lead to a thrashing. Look at the difference when Scotland had the ball, Germany hunted in two's and three's to win it back easily every time.

He was great to watch, and great that an older player can still be valued in an era where we are always hearing "get the young players in" at any cost. Youth is important but if you can mix the value of experience with the fitness of the younger players then you have a great chance of creating a balanced winning team

You have to get stuck in, if Germany’s superstars can hunt in 2s and 3s, why can’t the so-called “brave and courageous” Scots? They simply froze on a big stage, were terrified to try tackle anyone and basically lumped it out anytime they got the ball. It was horrific to watch. Probably one of the worst international performances in the last decade.

I'm not saying they would have won, had they applied pressure from the very start, but if you give up this early, this German team apparently will not give you many opportunities to come back in again.
I dont know what everyone was expecting from scotland compared to THIS german team. On paper, they have some really talented youngsters breaking out into world class levels of individual talent, and they are finally starting to gel well as a team. No offence to scotland, but even if you have more chemistry than a team thats better on paper, you still need individual talent to rely on to win games. Germany has both world class talent and chemistry where as scotland have chemistry and alot of mixed levels of talent to make up the team.
Seems pretty obvious to me, but it was always germany's game to lose, not scotlands game to win.

100% mate. People forget Germany's squad had 22 of the 24 players playing in the Champs League this year and 18 of them made it to the group stages. 9 of the players played in the CL semi finals... Let that sink in NINE of Germany's players played in the CL semi finals. They've got 3 players from Leverkusen who were UNBEATEN in the Bundesliga this year. There's little chance Wirtz stays there next year, someone from one of the big PL, Spanish or Italian teams is going to roll out their chequebook and sign him.

Not starting with Shankland and setting up as we did, was one of the most bizarre decisions I have ever seen in professional football.
It makes sense if U were going to press and use Adams to press Kroos. Adams is a lot quicker and higher energy than Shankland.

i think the Scotland manager is under the impression that football games are won by stopping goals being scored, so put so much emphasis on defence that it meant Germany could just keep on attacking and faced no pressure
if we had actually attacked right from the start then they would have had to defend a lot more and not been given such free licence to run in our half as we would have been in THEIR Half
It was a bad result. Ireland had that same problem for years. Got us to a couple of euros, but everyone didn't like the way it looked and assumed the players could play more.
When we finally did switch it up to more than getting everyone behind the ball, it's turned into a mess.
The players aren't together long enough to grasp even a basic possession based system that can win games consistently.
Doubt very much results would change for Scotland if a manager said let's get up the field more and keep the ball more.
That strategy works for Southgate.

I’ve been going to Scotland games for years and that, by far, is the worst I’ve ever seen us. Starting XI, sub decisions, tactically poor. Disappointing, especially with all eyes on us. Fans did their part, let down by the team

Players hate having players get in their face and hitting them hard, it can make better players play in a different way which can give the other team an opportunity. Its a tale as old as time in football, if they are better than you then out work them, get in their faces and make it difficult as possible, its why underdogs sometimes come out on top in football.

What was Scotlands' game plan tonight? They seemed to approach the game with hope, not a plan.
So why did we play with a low block? We invited them on to us. Keane is spot on. We were so far off it that it was incredible. Our set up was so wrong. Manager needs to have a serious think. No shots on target sums it up.
Scotland should've just gone for it. Why play 5 at back? 4 would've done and more in mid' 2 up front. Go for it
100% this, Germany wasn't starting with wide forwards so what was the point of playing 5 in the back, there were players standing around with no one to mark in most of the goals cuz the Scottish CBs didn't know how to step up to fill the pocket in a 3 CB set up. Would've faired way better with 4 in the back and double pivot in front.
They should call Mel Gibson and have him give the team an inspiring speech. It worked out for them in the past

Don't understand why Scotland didn't put the ball player under any form of pressure? What happened to pressing? Germany had too much time to pass the ball which, even if their form is bad is deadly due to the accuracy of their passing.

Not just the first 20 minutes. After pressing lead to goal chances the Scots stopped doing that and never got the ball. A good manager would have changed the manner of pressing or offer an alternative, but even in the second half they were clueless. Nagelsmanns tactic was too good…

Course he needs to be harsh - Germany or not, we sat off them and let Toni Kroos play any pass he wanted. 60 mins before someone even tackled him. We sat off them and played 541 - formation and personel all wrong. Calum McGregor (very poor), Ryan Porteous should never play in a scotland shirt ever again. Hes well know for 2 footed tackles you wont get it out his game and gets sent off quite alot for it. Ralston was awful and the back 5 were all over the place. Dont even get me started on Handley ffs slower than a week in the jail he is!

Yeah the sheer difference in quality between the players in the two teams is staggering. Musiala, Wirtz, Kroos, Rudiger, Neuer, Kimmich are all incredible. Bringing a player like Sane off the bench is insane in comparison to us having Lawrence Shankland being the player everyone wants on to somehow change the tide.
I don't know how we have gone from beating Spain 2-0 in a fantastic performance to this though, it was so slow and we were literally unable to keep the ball in the first half. Probably spent like 1 minute in the Germany half. I'm worried for the Switzerland and Hungary games now though, the Swiss squad which is meant to be the easiest game is full of good players, and if we are anywhere close to that performance we will get absolutely pumped
