  • Back once again with some more car booty - and of course the bleeping Pentium II. Can we fix it this time?

    @Richard: I know why your Downloaded BIOS did not work. These are double packed! Open extracted BIN file with 7zip or winrar and unpack them again. You get: "original.tmp" file. Then try to flash new unpacked file to the CHIP....PLEASE NOTE: there are two sizes! 1Mbit and 2Mbit there for download! You have to know, what version (SIZE!) is suitable for your board.....

    13:18 You made a classic noob mistake there. The flashrom is 2Mbit (holds 256kB) but the file you programmed to it is only 128kB. You need to program a bios file that is size 256kB. Alternatively if the bios really is just 128kB you can double it using the dos copy /b command and then program the 256kb file to fill the flashrom and if you are lucky it will be accepted. Often boards used a rom twice as big as required and the image was doubled up so that it could switch to a recovery mode and boot from the 2nd copy.

    Vanta = lower clocked TNT2 M64.
    There seems to be a rumour of a 2Mbit BIOS, but seems to have bitrotted away, maybe doubling the file would help

    I would try reflashing your original BIOS back to it. If that doesn’t work I’d look at unpacking those downloaded BiOS files differently as someone else suggested.

      but the original backup bios is corrupted and may be the wrong one, it must be checked if this backup is the 256k version. for me it looks like someone already flashed the wrong bios before like he is now doing

    the bleeping motherboard needs a different bios because the chip is an 2m version and you flashed the wrong bios

  • @dedr4m
    @dedr4m 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I've had good luck flashing the BIOS back-up back onto itself.
    But that'd be in cases of bit-rot, which a KBC ROM using a bad batch of Atmel ROMs at work had the issue.
    Something else bout those BIOS files was the bit where it looks like a string turned from "awardex.rom" to "original.tmp" at the end, maybe a compiler artefact, but just an oddity I noticed.

    Are you sure that floppy doesn't need the lead with the twisted section? early motherboards / floppy's needed a lead with about 4 leads swapped.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      IIRC Whichever is at the end of the cable will be the A: drive and the other one will be the B: drive. That's why there is a twist in the cable, it saves you from having to set a jumper on the floppy drive. But it was all a very long time ago so I hope I remembered that correctly

      The BIOS recovery mechanism seems to be looking specifically for drive A, which should be plugged in after the twist.

    At least you made that terrible bleeping stop. That was the worst bleeping I've ever heard. I'm surprised none of those BIOS worked. I felt for sure when you flashed the chip it'd boot then. Can you checksum the files you've got? Whenever I'm doing critical stuff I always hash the files I've downloaded to make sure what I have is right. You never know what condition a file is in that's been kicking around on the Internet for 25 years now.

    • @user-mw6se3jp6z
      @user-mw6se3jp6z 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      but you also must check the bios chip size and the bios file size, which he didnt know or forgot , and he flashed the 128k bios file onto that 256k chip and of course this will not work

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@user-mw6se3jp6z Why won't it work? 128KB can fit in a 256KB space. If he tried to flash 256KB into 128KB that wouldn't work. Half would be missing then. You can half fill memory though. You just can't jump to the unused memory addresses. Which shouldn't happen. The code you have should never try to go out of bounds.

    • @user-mw6se3jp6z
      @user-mw6se3jp6z 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@1pcfred it wont work because of the different pinout from the bios chips, the 1m bios chip has different pinout, you can check datasheets for chips. and the biosfile is written especially for the specific sizetype of the bios chip. so it cannot function.

    • @chrishartley1210
      @chrishartley1210 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The bios id is 8 characters long. For 2 of those bios files it is 2A69JW0B. That is the correct id. The other one with bios id 2A69JW0M is probably for a later version motherboard and explains why it starts to boot then fails. They correct ones have originally come from Wimsbios.
      The very fact that one of those bioses is for a different machine should start ringing alarm bells about the veracity of any of them.
      In any case, according to Edwin at Wimsbios (the guy who patched them) the -10 version was untested when released.
      If you want the tested version, head over to Wimsbios, click on the menu and find Downloads -> Patched bios with large HDD support.
      The one you want is at the bottom of the last page, 2A69JW0BC-07.
      The concerns about 1Mb and 2Mb chips is a red herring. It only matters if you try to put a 2Mb bios onto a 1Mb chip, not the other way round.
