21:25 Those are essentially 486 core chips with a reduced external address bus. TI made several chips that could upgrade a junker PC into a slightly less junker PC. It wasn't a true 486 and the speed improvement was maybe 30% if you were lucky. I have a 386 board here that had a 386SX-25 CPU (QFP surface mounted type) which ran like a dog with only 2 legs. I removed it and soldered in a TI 486SXLC2-50 chip and now it runs like a dog with 3 legs lol!

That 7600 gt is worth a little more than you thought. When you searched, I noticed you were looking at values for the pci-e versions of the card. That one is agp and the 7600 gt is near the end of agp's lifespan. I think the 7000 series was the last nvidia generation to be released on agp, so you've got one of the fastest agp cards there. A keeper imo.
Oh you are completely correct - the 7600 GT AGP version is about €50-€70. The fastest AGP card I have at the moment (in my LGA775 core 2 AGP machine) is a HD3450 and the 9600 GT is much much faster 🙂
@@LearnElectronicsRepair Yah. ATI or AMD whatever got some later releases than nvidia, so I'm not completely correct. It is one of the fastest nvidia cards for agp since they stopped with the 7900gs. Hang on to those late model agp cards. They just keep getting more and more expensive.
Interesting videos Richard. It’s great that you share your knowledge. See you in the next one. Artie 👍
you are trying to boot from drive A (floppy). Change to c: in the bios
No. It didn't detect a hdd so it reverts to trying to boot from fdd.
@@g4z-kb7ct As far as I could see it did detect the HDD. I didn't check to see if the boot sequence was A,C,D or C,A,D or whatever. I here the HDD click then it looks for A: drive
I would have been so fast to pay 20 euros for that baby AT system, what a packed little gem that is!. The board has an ALI chipset, so i think that would mean it's also an Asus board but can't be 100% on it. Im jealous lol :D
Knew it was a 486 there before you opened it, guess the volume wheel Sound Blaster gave that away for me, and boot from HDD might have helped instead of 1.2Mb FDD A lol
Love that 486 😊
Yay. A birthday booty bonanza 😊
35:00 That sound card is a Sound Blaster Pro 2 with a Panasonic proprietory CDROM interface. It's ok but isn't any better than any other Soundblaster card from that era. I quickly looked on the bay and found several CT1600 with asking price ranging from AUD250 to AUD450. I suppose those people think they can sell it and retire lol
1:30 hands up who spotted the AMD logo on the fan while he says P4? :)
yeah I guessed at the start it was AMD because the fan is cheap chinese junk not the higher quality Intel type.
I spotted it later LOL
That graphics card is actually a Paradise GPU. Paradise was bought out by Western Digital in 1986. ISA cards were produced from 1986 to 1992, with VLB, AGP and PCI cards being produced from 1993 to 1996.
The WD90C11 was released in 1989. The boards had either 256K or 512K of video RAM with a maximum resolution of 1024x768. The colour depth is dependent on the amount of video RAM with 512K boards supporting 1024x768 in 16 colours and lower resolutions in 256 colours. The MUSIC chip is the RAMDAC.
I noticed that your PSU has the -5V wire (the white one). Have you come across any motherboards which won't run without -5V?
I remember an AMD board like that, possibly an Athlon, which just would not run. I recollect taking it back and when they tried it with their PSU and it worked fine. That's when I found out that many of the lower priced PSUs didn't have -5V, including the one I had purchased at the same time and the other ones they were selling unless I was willing to pay silly money. I solved it by tagging a 7905 onto the -12V line.
Heya, 1 more nice carboot sale. that 486dx is cool to bad I don't have 3,5" ploppies any more
28:00 It's easier to test this type of random IDE drive on a P4 or similar where the newer bios can auto-identify the drive and select the correct type and drive parameters C/H/S etc. Then format it and it should work if the drive is good. But do try the auto-identify parameters first incase you are lucky and they match what the original user set them to. I assume the drive has an OS on it but unless you set the same CHS when it was previously fomatted you won't be able to access it. Of course you can auto-set the CHS and re-format it and it should work.
I also think the HDD is OK, just not bootable, As it came with this PC I would have thought the auto-detected IDE parameters are the correct ones though there is no definite proof of that
Your 7600gt is AGP so it probably worth something, not too much but it's not 10Ł either. €30-50 more likely.
Richard, I have a project idea. I have a cat, and would like to install a cat door, so he can go outside when he wants. The problem is the door would let in other cats, raccoons, etc. The idea would be a circuit that could read the RFID chip in the cat and using a Solenoid to momentarily release the door. It would be nice if the circuit had pressure sensor/ coil /pickup coil mat to detect the cat, and a learn function and set-up the reading of the RFID chip. I have looked and there no cat/dog doors on the market that would do this.
This is something more in Det's realm of experience
RFID cat flaps have been around for years, there's' heaps of them. Some even work with the implanted ID chip rather than needing one on their collar. I used BlueTooth trackers to make a doorbell for my cats.
@@j.f.christ8421 thanks. I went looking again and found one on Ebay. PetSafe Microchip Cat Door, 4-Way Locking $53
the sound card that sold for £72 was a completely different sound card to the one you had
Ok thanks
That TX486DLC is a 386/486 hybrid. With the drivers installed it behaves as a 486.
I guessed it was a 486 so I claim the prize.
The prize is yours
What was your hardest electronics repair?
thats actually the side you was taking off not the top
Sir, I need a help.
My Socket 939 System is having a strange USB problem.
While working in Windows XP, every few minutes, a pop-up comes up saying - Unknown USB Device can't initialized.
I changed Keyboard and Mouse, even switched to a PS2 keyboard-Mouse, but error still exists. even reinstalled Windows XP.
Hi! What happened to the bleeper PC from last car boot?
Doesn't bleep anymore with the replacement BIOS file but it still doesn't fully boot either
Those early BIOSes were very specific in their configuration and generally would not go looking for other boot devices by themselves. The boot sequence is either in Advanced CMOS Setup or Advanced Chipset Setup, though it depends on the actual BIOS how this has been implemented. Going from memory, the sound of the drive suggests it may actually be okay.
A word of advice: Do not use any of the Hard Disk Utilities in the BIOS. The 'Format', from what I remember, is actually a low-level format and will likely destroy critical drive-specific control tracks and data of the drive making it completely unusable and effectively destroying it. In those days these 'utilities' were too primitive to risk using, with perhaps the possible exception of having a drive that is correctly programmed into the BIOS so such a utility might actually work correctly. I remember these BIOSes and have always considered these utilities to be 'dangerous' and should never have been included in the BIOS itself.
That's an old wives tale. By the time 386 and 486 PCs were made the drive electronics were intelligent. Running those utilities on an IDE drive won't do anything, it just ignores it and certainly running the motherboard bios utility will simply format the drive. Some of those old HDD utilities could ruin an old ST506 MFM drive but those utilities won't even work with IDE and if you are running that kind of ST506 drive now on a retro PC you may want to seek medical help.
@@g4z-kb7ct If there is no way to tell it what format to use then it has to be a low-level format which always carries a risk of bricking the drive, no matter what the technology is. There's also no way to know the state or content of the BIOS code that supposedly performs such an operation.
I'm guessing by your tone and insults that you've done nothing more than a quick google search and have little to no actual experience or logical capability. In a real IT support environment, no-one would risk executing any of those 'utilities' on a customer's system. Incidently, I have many years experience behind me and currently maintain servers as well as desktop machines.
@@DelticEngine Tone and insults?
@@LearnElectronicsRepair Point taken. I was going to edit the comment to change the wording, specifically removing the 'only a complete idiot' wording and rewriting the second paragraph.
Things have been incredibly stressful for me very recently due extreme personal circumstances.
The gpu is a Geforce 7600 gs agp... the agp versions do have value. The pci-e versions don't. The agp version has more value as people like to put too new and the wrong gpu in their pc for retro use and do not understand driver overhead and driver optimization.
22:52 - Eewww! I’d rather use an ultrasonic with Brasnson EC than public toilet water!! Just sayin’
28:37 - The hard drive may be ok. It just doesn’t have an operating system. Boot to a floppy and dir the root of the drive (C:\.)
The HDD will have an O/S because it came out of that working PC. Older 386/486 PCs needed to set up the drive type in the bios and type 47 is the user type with typed in parameters. When formatted with some parameters it would work. But if different numbers are used the drive can't be accessed. Either the original numbers have to be re-typed in or they can be changed to some other numbers and the drive has to be formatted then it will work ok as long as the actual drive is ok. It's easier to test this type of random drive on a P4 or similar where it can auto-identify the drive and select the correct type. Then format it and it should work if the drive is good.

it wasn't they have sold it was the same listing duplicated
The motherboards at 31:30? Looks like it was relisted and sold 30 minutes later. Probably the buyer screwed up payment details or something, I've done that. Still sold one at a decent price though.
I can't believe how hairy your fingers are. It's amazing.
