Brake Caliper Mounts & Rebuild - Tracked Amphibious Vehicle Build Ep. 4

  • Converting this shortened LADA VAZ 2101 rear axle from drum to disc brakes - this axle will be used as a skid steering / brake-differential steering unit on the tracked amphibious all terrain vehicle that I'm fabricating at the moment. No welding was needed for the actual mounts of the brake supports although I managed to turn one half axle smaller in diameter than needed and had to MIG weld some steel on it and turn it again so it would fit the brake rotor of 2001 1.9 D Peugeot Partner. Brake rotors have cooling fins in them so hopefully they will not get burnt that fast when using the steering brakes on this vehicle. It was cheaper to rebuild these brakes rather than buying completely new ones. This axle & brakes unit will be coupled with tractor PTO parts to transmit power to the rear wheels that drive the tracks. By doing so I can position this differential more freely inside the tub of the tracked amphibious ATV which leaves me more options with the frame and body design. I do have the half axles I salvaged from the Peugeot Partner but I want to use one of them as a prop shaft which leaves me with only one good half axle. Also the CV joints can only be set on an angle so far and the axles can't really be modified in length that easily compared to the tractor PTO parts. Stay tuned for next video in this series next Friday same time and feel free to subscribe. Cheers!

    Hey Donn coming right along and great job on the Oops. Nice save on the pistons, glad they weren’t ruined. Really liking all the remanufacturing you are doing.Shows the skills and patience you have learned and to make the boo-boos right before going on. Thanks for sharing with us. Keep up the good work and videos.

    When i first saw this build i thought you were going to shorten the axel adapt cv joints and have a rack and pinion type system. I was really excited. Ive been toying with that idea for an amphibious vehicle. Years back we made a 6 wheel atv from a corvair using brakes for steering. It required constant maintenance and adjustments. The inline brake system youre doing is genius.

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I word of caution - I'm using this solution on an off-road vehicle that moves really slowly. I'm not saying converting a car from drum brakes to disc brakes can't be done but I reckon there's much more to consider when doing so. Just from the safety aspect. But the idea behind the aftermarket conversion kits is the same so go figure... I've converted an ATV like this before but again - it's an off-road vehicle.

    If you had a bucket, could've filled with evapo-rust or diesel fuel and let soak over night before working on those parts. Would've made them a lot easier to come apart for ya. Always use air to remove those brake cylinders, so much easier on everything, not going to hurt anything either.
    I'm looking forward to seeing how this all comes out in the end. Good work so far. Cheers :)

    There are some CV axles that use a bolt flange for the inner end. Might be easier than creating the entire setup with the PTO parts. Look into front axles from a 4 wheel drive truck. Here we have the Chevy S10 that would work.
