Differential Steering Unit - Tracked Amphibious Vehicle Build Ep. 3

- Making a LADA VAZ 2101 rear axle shorter for my tracked amphibious all terrain vehicle build. It will be placed inside the vehicle with Peugeot Partner brake rotors and calipers installed to it with separate brake master cylinder for each caliper to act as a differential-brake steering unit. If the differential or the half axles I shortened fail for some reason there's easy access to the differential itself and it's easier to maintain, too. The brake master cylinders I ordered are actually hydraulic clutch master cylinders that have one output line and filler line which is perfect for the job. Don't know whether the clutch master cylinder itself is good although I've seen these used on this kind of application before. This differential unit will be coupled with 2001 1.9 D Peugeot Partner five speed gearbox through the locked/welded differential in said gearbox. The power will be transmitted through the left side half axle output. This will result in a considerable gear reduction which is needed. Hopefully it isn't too slow and this machine will be still tolerable when reversing. New video next Friday! Stay tuned!

Good job , remember doing diff stripdowns and rebuilds on scanias in gb when I was 17 in my apprenticeship . Over 40 years ago . All nighters because they had to be ready for the afternoon of the next day . The crown wheels were riveted back then . Drilled out and cold pressed reset on manual press , good old days . Keep up the excellent work .

Great build! Cant wait for part 4. I really hope that the welded shafts hold. There was a video on youtube where some guy built a mini tractor, much in the same way as you did with the shortened rear end, only thing was that he cut the axles shorter, tacked the spline ends to the now shorter axle and used it as a template to cut splines directly on the axle using an angle grinder, worked like a charm. I hope you got the idea how he did it. Big thanks for your videos from your Latvian neighbour!

Mate , I learnt this from a bloke that used to make the generators for hydro power plants , my late uncle , although I couldn,t stand him ! ; watts = volts x amps , watts divided by volts = amps , watts divided by amps = volts , volts x amps = watts . Volts shock you , Amperes kill you , Watts then cremate you , so be extra careful when handling electricity , if in doubt ALWAYS consult a qualified electrician , go carefully mate . I wrote this out recently for a friend .

Not sure if you ever need a stronger way to shorten the stock axles but I learned a way from a guy named Leon , In So. California , who built V-8 powered Trikes and narrowed his own rearends and shortened his own axles . He cut the axle off just before the bearing , Bored a hole through the flange part , turned the axle to fit the bore , he kept the axle as thick as possible . He would push the axle through the hole , He drilled and put a pin through the hub and axle parts and welded the Pin , and ends to the hole , also welded the axle where it met the flange . He built quite a few of them and I never heard of any axles breaking and they had big block engines in most with the widest pro street type hot rod rear tires he could get . He was a great fabricator and his trikes were awesome . I did some axles this way for a project and it really was simple and I felt good about the integrity of it , not for a race car but for a cool project it's fine . Just thought I'd share that . Looking good so far. I'm glad that you put a lot more commentary notes in this videos and you even talked some about what's going on! And, I'm not bashing your welds on the axels, because I'm not the best welder in the world and I don't know how much torque will be put on those axels, but I hope the weld joints on the axels holds up. When you showed the finished product on the welded axels, I did notice some flaws in the weld joint. But, hopefully for you there won't be an issue with it.
I enjoy your projects a hell of a lot. I really enjoy seeing scrap turned into some wild machine. Thanks for sharing these.

looks good so far!!! i will recommend one VERY helpful tip: When grinding, cutting, sanding Aluminum coat the wheel really well with wax. it will cut like butter and give you a machined like finish. i get my candles at the dollar store.
Does it have the same effect as putting wax on screws?

That looks excellent :o) The drive shaft shortening was really good.
Cheap tip for pulling bearings of axles and two piece drive shafts. Find a set of the thickest plate you can shove under the bearing and then weld them together with some thick walled box tubing as close to the bearing as you can but with just a very small gap at the bearing (you should be able to just be able to spin the metal by hand). then just place it on top of the bridge deck of the press and have some fun lol.
Have had to do this a number of times on Chevy (Holden for the non US crowds) center support bearings on their two piece drive shafts, as a normal bearing press plate doesn't grab the inner race of the bearing. I have blown a few up pressing on what ever I can get to hold lol.

I think you should check the setup on the Ring gear. It is a very critical area, that needs to be correct, anytime you install new, used, or miss matched parts. Thanks for sharing.👍👍👍👍
You can't use un-matched ring and pinion gears, they have to be a matched set. They are lapped together so there is no bind or too much slap. .005" - .007" gap on a matched set.

Both my father and grandfather taught me. And I learned just being next to them while they worked in the farm on the equipment. It was interesting to me and they are a big influence on me.
@@DonnDIY I started turning wrenches when I had to climb onto the fender of a vehicle my dad or one my brothers were almost always doing repairs or just general maintanence and I would drive them crazy with questains and wanting to know what I could do so they give me something just to shut me up, Lol

Excellent work my friend. I only have one complaint. And it's pretty simple you remove your captions too soon and I how to rewind the video all the time so that I can read the whole thing you only leave it up for like 2 seconds that's not enough time to read it. Maybe it's just me I don't know but it would be nice if you left them up a little longer. One year captions was kind of long and I had to rewind the video like three times so I can read the whole thing. Other than that great job you do good work. And you got a good mind. Able to think things through I admire that. Looking forward to the next video.

I have found that using a pair of old brake rotors cut in half and then placed front to front with the cuts 90 degrees to each other works well as a backstop to press bearings off of shafts.
thats what valdimir does when he wants to run very vide drag slicks in his lada.
