Dido didn't want to be painted because it was common in this era for Black people to be placed lower on the canvas to indicate subordination. She was worried the painting would be used to further other her from her family. However, it's finally revealed that the artist placed Dido and Elizabeth on the same level, indicating equal status, which is why the painting is significant in real life. That said, it's worth noting that the real painting does still exoticize her with the turban and tropical fruits. The movie removed that.
th-cam.com/video/NXjhjU4JDdA/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=CrowsEyeProductions this channel did amazing research about why Dido was painted in that style, and they found that it may have been because of a stylistic/artistic choice of the painter David Martin, rather than to exoticise her for her race.
It could be perceived as them eroticizing her, but wasn't there a law back then that also didn't allow black women to wear their hair out. And that they had to cover it up with scarfs and etc.? I thought that's what happened.

It’s a good movie, but just remember that it is totally fictionalized. The only thing similar with the real Dido is her name. Her father left her no money and in fact he didn’t even acknowledge that she was his daughter, she was a charity case for her uncle and was treated like a servant throughout her life. They significantly edited the painting at the end of the film, in real life that painting portrays her as “exotic“ and subservient to her cousin. The whole plot about her being wealthier than her cousin was totally false. The hot lawyer didn’t exist, and Draco Malfoy’s character would not have wanted to marry her because again she was a servant. She ended up, marrying another servant, which would never have happened if she was wealthy, that type of interclass marriage was unheard of in 18th century England. She did not become an heiress until much later in life when her uncle died and he left her some money in his well.
@@samanthasmith61 fake how? Bridgerton is a fictional story and isn’t meant to be historical accurate. Belle is a true story dramatised and exaggerated but still had accurate accounts.
@@samanthasmith61 Dido was a real person, her father was a highly ranked naval officer, I believe he was knighted, her great uncle was a highly respected judge, she did get married Jean Louis Charles Davinière but I don’t think he was a layer in training, she received various inheritances from her family members. The painting is also real. The one thing that wasn’t accurate was their involvement in the Zong massacre case

The scene in the movie where she’s looking at herself and just dragging her hands down her neck and face made me so emotional. Because it made me feel so seen. I used to write a weekly post called “Great Scot!” about famous and interesting people of Scottish heritage throughout history, and I made a point to cover Dido (the Lindsay family are OLD Scottish aristocracy). One of the things that made her life so hard-and made it hard for her family to find a place for her in the world-was not just the “issue” of her skin color, but the suffocating social hierarchy. As a Lindsay, she was a Lady in every sense and thus above many of the eligible gentlemen, but her African heritage threw all of that into chaos for her British peers, hence the weird social gymnastics she had to live with to be accommodated. Probably her greatest legacy was how her very existence showed just how utterly ridiculous the British caste system was (and still is, honestly). As for her hesitation around the painting, her fear (as shown in the film) was that she would be shown as a subordinate caricature, as was the norm for representing black people at the time. The film doesn’t show a true replica of the real painting, where Dido is portrayed as somewhat exotic but is also in a more fashion-forward outfit than her cousin, and overall has far more personality in her depiction.
It wasn’t even the real painting though, they edited it to make it less problematic. In the actual painting, Dido is portrayed as “exotic” and subservient to her cousin, not as her cousin’s equal. The entire movie was heavily fictionalized, the story is nothing like the real Dido’s life, the only thing this character has in common with the real person is her name.
@@bebop2523 What do you mean? The picture at the end is the real painting. They only edited the one in the film to make it look more like the actresses. Notably, Dido _wasn't_ portrayed as subservient to her cousin, which makes the painting unusual for its time.
@@Curtis006 but sadly Dido was still dressed as a slve and made to wear a silly pose which isn't done to people of noble background and based on her wiki, she wasn't mistreated but miles away from her cousin.
The reason Dido didn't dine with her family wasn't her race, but her parents not having married. It wasn't socially acceptable for people of high class to dine with persons of low moral character or their children. There is a fantastic book also called Belle which treats on what little is known of the real woman.
the amount of downton abbey actors in this movie is **chef’s kiss** 😍 also, if you love historical romance like pride and prejudice, you’d probably like the show Sanditon. it gives all the tropes and feels, i’m obsessed tbh
Her story is very relatable, especially the part where she clawed at her face & neck. You could be the most beautiful (not that beauty matters but Dido was clearly gorgeous) woman in the room but trauma can have your mind distorted & make you think there's something wrong with you when there isn't. Truth is other people are just miserable & try to bring you down to their level because they see something in you they wish they had.

I was so happy my mixed races family watched this movie! I remember we were just looking for a romantic family movie night and we’re in the mood for real romance instead of a romcom and this movie had us all gagged! I could tell women in my family who had been married for generations were side eyeing their husbands like excuse me why are you not giving John’s energy?! And it was so nice to see and be able to talk about a mixed race couple and the joy but also complications that brings so I felt like people really understood each others struggles, it was nice
I saw it for the first time ever yesterday and it immediately became one of my favourites. I’d never heard of it before (or the story of Dido Belle Lindsey) but I randomly stumbled across it scrolling through HBO Max.

This film is so underrated and I’m always excited when people find it! With the actor who played davinier killing it in the new interview with the vampire I’m hoping more people will find this movie as they search out his other works.
YESS I LOVE HER I LOVE HER WITH EVERY BREATH I BREATHE. one of my favorite movies for years i thinks i watched it in 2016 for the first time it is so GOOD!! and i also love the part where her Papa and her mother were talking about her and she asked him "'do you love her?" and her answered with "as though she were created of you and me" 😭😭
I love this movie. I was adopted into a whyte family so a lot of the parallels with Belle and myself I saw the first time I watched this. Trying to wipe off my skin. Being raised by my parents to not see my color but to see myself as above other Black people who weren't adopted into whyte families. A whole mess that I am still learning to remove myself from and process. But so many parallels. I watch this movie constantly to feel seen. I didn't know my mother either. The lines that Belle says : "I know nothing of my mother other than the color she has given me" ring pretty true because I don't know very much about my mom either. I'm SO happy you found this movie - I hope it'll open eyes to so many problems and complexities with transracial adoption as well as how it can feel for us to be raised in families that do not look like us but surround us in racism and ignorance 24/7
Omgeee I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH! Always wondered why no one ever talked about it. This should be on the top with all the other big romance films like “The Notebook”, “Pride & Prejudice”! Definitely my top favorite movies!
I LOVE this movie. I remember seeing it with my family in the theaters and we were the only people in there besides another couple. IT. HAD. ME. FLOORED. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the movie is based on true events. Dido was an actual person. In my opinion, everyone NEEDS to see this film. Also, I think you are confused with the family structure, so let me explain. Dido and Elizabeth are cousins. But since they grew up together, they consider themselves as sisters. Both were left in the care of Lord Mansfield. Elizabeth's biological father is Lord Mansfield's son and Dido's father is his nephew. Since neither of them have a father or mother, they call Lord Mansfield and his wife 'Papa' and 'Mama.' Now, let's move on to ranking. Mr. Davina (or however you spell his name) is of lower rank than Dido and her family because he is the son of a clergyman. Now, within the family, Dido ranks lower than everyone else due to being mixed. However, she is in a better situation than her cousin because her father left her money. Oliver is in the same situation as Elizabeth. While he has rank, he was second born so he won't inherit anything. This is why his mother allows him to marry Dido.
this movie is highly inaccurate. in real life Dido's story was complete opposite to this movie from another comment It’s a good movie, but it is totally fictionalized, which is a shame, because the real Dido’s life was very interesting and I don’t understand why they had to make this completely fake story. If they made a movie about her actual life, it would’ve been a really fascinating look into what it was like to be a mixed-race woman in 18th century England. I would like to add Lady Elizabeth's father was 7th Viscount Stormont (nephew to Lord Mansfield, himself son of 5th Viscount Stormont), Dido's father was Sir John Lindsay (also the nephew but from his mother side) hence different surname, Dido and Lady Elizabeth were 2nd cousin. Dido's mother Maria belle was alive and well, we knew she stayed in England until 1774... and she was 14 when sir John had his way with her and 15 when Dido was born. real Lady Elizabeth was really rich! she inherited the most money out of all her siblings and that's excluding what she got from her own wealthy German aristocrat mother. She married first at 25 in 1785 to the heir of Earl of Winchilsea and Earl of Nottingham, her son was the 10th Earl of Winchilsea and Earl of Nottingham. her husband George Finch Hatton was rich too and have 2 huge manor and estate. Sir John Lindsay died in 1788 and left dido nothing, he only left small amount of money to be split between his 2 other illegitimate children. he died after Lady Elizabeth had left Kenwood and had children. Real Dido married when she was 32 in 1793 after Lord Mansfield's death to a servant called John Davinier. she was no heiress by any means, she received very very little, less than some Kenwood servants, while her cousin Lady Elizabeth got like x80. Dido was never never ever acknowledged by Lord Mansfield as his niece unlike Lady Elizabeth, Elizabeth was actually paraded irl and attended royal ball with Queen Charlotte but Dido wasn't allowed to attend. in fact Dido wasn't even acknowledged by her father Sir John Lindsay, he didn't gave her his name Lindsay, even though he did give his name to his 2 other illegitimate children Elizabeth Lindsay palmer and John Lindsay junior. Irl Lady Elizabeth was in better position to Dido in every possible way and until her father remarried (when she was 16) she was the heiress to Lord Mansfield's entire fortune and was raised as such.
This is so so so good. I don’t even remember when it came out. I love romance movies in general but ones that are set in the historic or 18th, 17th, 16th etc./ like olden times, especially if it also has some fantasy fairytale type of theme to it. Love the video & videos! You do an amazing job!
Belle was born the illegitimate but recognised daughter of a very wealthy and titled family. Her mother was African. Her father an English ship captain (basically imagine his status to be similar to that of Mr Darcy IRL). He was successful and with noble blood relatives. His uncle called "Papa" in this was the Earl of Mansfield. He took Belle in because her father knew it wasn't safe for her to live on a ship. She was raised with her cousin in a world of astonishing wealth but because of her illegitimacy she was also seen as below others. Her uncle the Earl of Mansfield was the Lord Chief Justice (think like the head of the Supreme Court). She did marry. The court case is a part in history in England. Her uncle ruled that the slaves that were thrown overboard were not property that could be covered by insurance thus making it very expensive to transport them. This began to help with the end of the slave trade by English merchants. I highly suggest you watch the movie "Amazing Grace" starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Romola Garia, and Ioan Gruffudd, about how slavery itself was abolished by the English Parliament. It's a great movie.

the movie was 99% fake, Dido Belle was broke irl, her father left her nothing not a penny, he also died in 1788, when Elizabeth was already married and had 2 kids in 1785. Didos mother was alive, but she was only 14yo when she got pregnant by john Lindsay and 15 when Dido was born Dido was given £500 and £100 annuity, Lady Elizabeth was given in total £40,000 invested this will give Elizabeth £2000 a year lmao (she was the heiress irl not Dido), Lady Elizabeth's husband was worth £20,000 a year (their son was 10th Earl) her husband would also inherited additional £30,000 a year from his cousin lmao!!! he was richh. Lady Elizabeth even had bridgerton moment when she presented her daughter to Queen Charlotte in Buckingham palace
Dido married a servant called John daviniere when she was 32 and live a lower class life, she died aged 43, her husband John daviniere remarried later to a white maid 14 years younger than him and had more children
this movie is sadly 100% fake. In reality, Dido had a creep for a father, he rapd a 14 yo child slave (Dido's mother) he continued to 4 black women having 4 more illegitimate children, he was a rpist and a scoundrel, he actually left Dido NOTHING so Dido was BROKE. (he actually died in 1788, Elizabeth already had 2 kids by then) Dido married in 1793 when she was 32 to a servant called Davinier. now in real life, Lady Elizabeth was the heiress, her father loved her like he loved her mother, which he deemed his true love, her father and her uncle in total gave her a huge fortune of £40,000 which generated £2,000 a year . Elizabeth married an Aristocrat with wealth of £20,000 a year

Other key phrases: Walk with me, meaning let's go on a date! Be with a man who is truly your equal, a man who respects you. You need not diminish yourself because of rank. Be with a man who would have you even if you didn't have your money. Davinier is of lower rank, because Dido and Elizabeth's family is from the aristocracy. Plus, he had no money and no prospects for the future to make money. His father was a clergyman but he might not have had aristocratic connections. Papa is Lord Mansfield, their great-uncle, because Dido's dad was Sir John Lindsey, his nephew. (Papa and Sir John Lindsay's mom were siblings). So it was big that Papa was going to sponsor John to become a lawyer as well. Becoming a lawyer, he will have prospects, and who knows, similar to Mansfield, he could get a title because of his hard work. The true story is that of Dido's very existence as indicated by the painting. She did marry John, but his story was different. The Zong case was true. Earl Mansfield decided it. Her dad was Sir John Lindsay, a naval officer and war hero.

@@samanthasmith61 I’ve literally listed the accurate accounts are the people and their circumstances and made it clear they had no involvement in the sun plot so what more do you want? It’s a good movie, but just remember that it is totally fictionalized. The only thing similar with the real Dido is her name. It’s a good movie, but it is totally fictionalized, which is a shame, because the real Dido’s life was very interesting and I don’t understand why they had to make this completely fake story. The only thing similar with the real Dido is her name. Her father left her no money and in fact he didn’t even acknowledge that she was his daughter, she was a charity case for her uncle and was treated like a servant throughout her life. She did not become an heiress until much later in life when her uncle died and he left her some money in his well. If they made a movie about her actual life, it would’ve been a really fascinating look into what it was like to be a mixed-race woman in 18th century England.
The film doesn’t show a true replica of the real painting, where Dido is portrayed as somewhat exotic but is also in a more fashion-forward outfit than her cousin, and overall has far more personality in her depiction.
the way i gasped when they showed the real painting at the end, i love that painting 💗
There is a fantastic book also called Belle which treats on what little is known of the real woman.
the amount of downton abbey actors in this movie is **chef’s kiss** 😍

Girlll I saw this in THEATRES, This is one of my comfort movies you had me rollin 😭😭

I LOVEEEE this movie! I became a huge Gugu fan after this and then her performance in Beyond the Lights made me a stan!
Since neither of them have a father or mother, they call Lord Mansfield and his wife 'Papa' and 'Mama.'
Now, let's move on to ranking. This is why his mother allows him to marry Dido.
this movie is highly inaccurate. in real life Dido's story was complete opposite to this movie

"girl go wet your hair" lol she doesn't know, that's how disconnected she was
i mean all she think about was white dik so served her right
This is so so so good. I don’t even remember when it came out. I love romance movies in general but ones that are set in the historic or 18th, 17th, 16th etc./ like olden times, especially if it also has some fantasy fairytale type of theme to it. Love the video & videos! You do an amazing job!
Belle is genuinely a wonderful historical romance that is the reason I was so happy for Bridgerton to be made. Plus it's based on a true story.

Didos mother was alive, but she was only 14yo when she got pregnant by john Lindsay and 15 when Dido was born
Dido was given £500 and £100 annuity, Lady Elizabeth was given in total £40,000 invested this will give Elizabeth £2000 a year lmao (she was the heiress irl not Dido), Lady Elizabeth's husband was worth £20,000 a year (their son was 10th Earl) her husband would also inherited additional £30,000 a year from his cousin lmao!!! he was richh.
