- First time watching "10 Things I Hate About you" Movie Reaction. Today I am watching 10 things I hate about you and we already know I'm SIMPING. Anywho Heath Ledger was great in this movie and pretty much the whole cast was great. This movie was surprisingly better than I thought it would be. It gives romance, enemies to lovers, eye candy, and unrealistic expectations... so we're set.

I think you’ve identified the formula for late 90s/early 00s teen movies in its most boiled-down form.
I actually respect Patrick for NOT kissing Kat when he brings her home from the party drunk and concussed. He's a gentleman with a good heart. He knew she was hurt and vulnerable and he didn't want to take advantage of her in that moment. He was willing to wait until they were both ready for that step. He's a good man like that.

However I can’t let it go unsaid, Kat is not a “not like other girls” girl.
The definition of not like other girls is girls who act different from other girls and femininity to attract guys attention. Kat wasn’t seeking guys attention by acting the way she was. She was just being herself.
She is actually a counter to that trope. And I thank God for her everyday.
I got it but I only felt that way at the beginning of the movie towards the end I understood her more
"not like other girls" isn't specifically about attracting men, that's an overly narrow way to look at it. it can just be about feeling a sense of superiority over other, "shallow" girls because your interests are more valid and less "frivolous" (aka feminine). someone might not wear makeup and then act like that makes them better and more special than the girls that are interested in that stuff, while not really expecting to be perceived as attractive for it. it's not just about men, it's about self superiority and internalized misogyny. a girl that puts other girls down to look better to boys is *actually* a pick me girl.
i see more "not like other girls" as more of criticizing girls for being freely feminine.
I agree with all of these comments from both/all sides. Humans are so nuanced. Fascinating.
Not-like-the-other-girls is a form of toxic feminism that says a girl is better than other girls if she “breaks free” from traditional/majority girl things. It comes from the value that a girl does not need to be limited by the average/historical roles or desires. The toxicity is the judgment that a girl who chooses this route is better than other girls. It became very tropy in the 90s. Legally Blonde is considered to be a well-made rejection of this trope.
It can be applied to relationships, but doesn’t inherently involve them.
the reason patrick didnt kiss kat in the car was cuz she was drunk and he wasnt. he even said it later in the movie "I didn't do anything she wouldve been too drunk to remember" then kat kicked the soccer ball at him
And because she yakked. Two solid reasons not to kiss someone.

Love this movie. It has some of my favorite actors/actresses and is never cringe. This here is proof that William Shakespeare wrote timeless classics that can be adapted to any setting.
Fun Fact: The scene in which Kat reads the "10 Things" poem was the first and only take, according to the DVD extras. Kat's tears towards the end of the poem were real and not planned.

I have been going on a manga binge lately 😳I’ve read That Wolf Boy is Mine! So for recommends, I don’t know if I’d call all of these ENEMIES to lovers but definitely DISLIKE to lovers lol. My recommends: Ao Haru Ride, Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai, Lovesick Ellie, Namaikizakari, and Love Me Love Me Not. The manga website I use to keep track of what I’ve read mostly uses the Japanese titles but I think some of these do have official English translations and they all definitely unofficial ones heheh
I also really really really like the comic The Lady With a Mask that I think was an online comic. I’ve read that one twice 😆

I can see that people think Kat is a not like other girls type esp at first, but I think she just doesn’t want to open herself up anymore to undeserving people or people who will hurt her.

Hahaha what a great reaction! I think this does a pretty good job of character growth for a romcom, the mains are such stereotypes of characters in the beginning but all become a little more multi-dimensional by the end. And that Heath Ledger singing scene is just iconic.

I love enemies to lovers manga!! I would recommend "Skip Beat" ( it's a manga, and part of it has an anime adaptation) and "Dengeki daisy." I never really heard about these titles until I visited my local library. Hope it helps!

You're not crazy, it was made into a tv show too. It wasn't on for very long and it wasn't very good but, if you have vague memories of a tv show version, that's why. 😆And in case you didn't pick up on it, this movie is actually a teen/modern version of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew". Bet you didn't know you were continuing the Shakespeare romance theme after "Romeo and Juliet", did ya?! 😉You should do "Midsummer Night's Dream" now too, just to cap it all off!
P.S. If after Valentine's Day is over, you wanna watch a non-romance movie with an even younger Joseph Gordon-Levitt, you need to watch "Angels in the Outfield"!! He was only about 12 in that movie and absolutely adorable! ❤❤❤

I loved everything you said. Your commentary was golden. And I really liked how by the end, your perceptions of the characters and their archetypes shifted. Because I totally agree, at the beginning everyone fits into stereotypical roles. Kat being the "not like other girls" girl, her sister being a "pick-me", and even Patrick being the typical "bad boy". But by the end we realize that somewhere along the way the characters became flushed out and more than their original labels. Love this movie so much. And your reaction was perfect and hilarious.

Lovely Complex, Kodocha and Maid Sama are the first 3 i think about for Enemies to Lovers manga. I should know more since I also like the genre but i like it done right imho lol. Hope you like them
Karo Kano aka His and Her Circumstances is another one i know of but I personally didn’t like the initial plot so I didn’t read/watch it but heard it was good. An older series tho

One thing is I love your reactions so far (Born again Christian myself). Another is, because you liked the first Hunchback, I recommend Number 2. Such a dope film. And fun fact: Back to the Future has a short film called Back to the 2015 Future and a 2 season animated tv series. - Also, yes there is a tv show called 10 Things I Hate About You; it's connected to this, but Larry Miller as Walter Strafford is the only one from the movie who's in the show. (Also, I do recommend Cinderella 1 & 2 also). And Lady and the Tramp 1 & 2.

the "self assured" line is actially very intelligent & tells all you need to know about this character....prob not obvious unless you know a lil bout psychology & juman motives/drives.
him saying he tells himself that everyday (literally assuring himself daily) as his response to being told he is self assured is just such a clever way of agreeing (owning it). Also demonstrating it as a positive, when it was said as a slight criticism, is emotionally intelligent, as well. its called "reframing" & THAT is quite a quick-minded skill to possess.
I watched this movie way too much 😂 I didn't see it until high school, but I went to Stadium High School- which is the castle-like school that this takes place at. Most teachers would play this movie as a default anytime they just wanted to have a movie day 😂 It created a real love / hate relationship with me and this movie, but now that I haven't watched it for a couple of years I kind of want to re-watch it💀

For a minute in the nineties we thought that was a girl-power move. I think because Drew Barrymore flashed David Letterman on live TV, and it seemed weirdly badass at the time.

I watched this movie when I was a kid and I misunderstood him when he said she shouldn't fall asleep after she hit her head while drunk. I was probably 17 when I learned it's not dangerous to fall asleep while drunk.
