DIY Drag Knife Update

  • Video short of how I modified a laser cutter exhaust fan to use as a vacuum pump for my drag knife.
A word of warning don't use a vacuum cleaner as the pump to drive a vacuum. The motor needs the air flow through it to keep cool. So you could burn it out or burn your house down. Just sayin!!
After using this drag knife for a couple of months its does the job just fine. Seems to work best with cheapo blades win win!
I only cut cardboard with it and blades last around thirty sheets of card. So cutting cost is fraction of a penny per sheet.
Worth the trouble to make it.

Good idea to get rid of the bearings and just use the spindle.

Thats a thought. With my machine you would have to disconnect the motor drive VFD as it brakes the spindle and makes it more difficult to rotate.
      Thanks for the comment

Love the vacuum table design. You got me thinking now.....
Where do you source your cardboard sheets?

      Hi CaffeineMachine,
I got most of our packaging from Kite packaging in the UK. However cardboard is readily available there are lots of suppliers.
      Cheers

What is the offset between the centre of the spindle and the tip of the blade? Assuming there is one!!

Hi John, I think its around 3-5mm there seems to be a bit of variation in the blades, different sizes from different suppliers. You enter the offset when you program the cutting paths in the fusion plugin.
      Cheers

I'm wanna throw down the gauntlet for you. I'd like to see that thing drag around a glass cutter on a piece of sheet glass. Being able to quickly cut out precise glass pieces for stained glass work would be the cats ass! Now get to work!

Thinking about my idea, it wouldn't even have to drag around a conventional glass cutter, just a diamond tipped tool. Looks like its been done. th-cam.com/video/wbl1Va24yIs/w-d-xo.html

A carbide drag engraver should do it! just needs to be sprung loaded.

@@CazualHaze Now that is a thought, I have a diamond drag bit for my CNC.

If you give it a go let us know how it went.
I can't use my CNC router for the moment it's in storage until I get me new shop built.
