  • The latest product from the depths of the Carbide 3D R&D lab is MC Etcher, a diamond drag engraver. Here's an overview of how it works, and which one to get.
    Note: New MC Etchers feature a new spring that provides more linear, progressive force. The set screw may need to be adjusted by several rotations instead of just a fraction of a turn.

    Drag engravers are great on anodized aluminum plates. The lettering really pops!

      I bet! I used to do diamond and deep etch engraving and I never had anodized stock as a workpiece, but I wish I had. That would be amazing.

    I purchased the set from you a month or so ago and wanted to give it a try today. I'm using V-Carve pro software. Just wondering what I should set the depth/pressure to when engraving glass? Right now, it's defaulted to 0.0 inches. Cheers! Trevor

    The same g-code editing for the Nomad could also apply to the Shapeoko if you're using the BitRunner or a DIY alternative. Will C3D patch Carbide Motion to automatically ignore these commands if you're using a drag engraving bit (assuming it's a predefined tool, like the ones already supported in CM such as the 102, etc.)?

    I own a lakeshore carbide engraver. What are your thoughts on diamond drag vs lakeshore engraving tool for high carbon steel? Most drag tool uses I see are for aluminum and some ppl complain about breakage or wearing depending on the product.

    Would the MC etcher allow you to cut stencils or vinyl? If not, is an attachment like that in the works? Could negate the need for some makers to buy a cricut maker.

      We'd love to but it barely fit in the .25" shank.

      @@carbide3d Just found a .25" ER11 collet on your site, which is what the snapmaker uses. That would probably have rigidity issues, but I think with lower downward pressure and work speed, it could be doable. What is the OAL of the Engravers?

    what would be recommendation of machine and engraving-oritented software for engraving metal tags and keys ? I need fast turnaround, as this is in a client-facing operation. My key machines have a rudementary engraving capability, but it is not precise for positioning. I need a dedicated routing machine, that can do much more, but day-in and out, it will engrave keys.

    What's a good line width value and stepover for the 120 and 90 deg? :)

      Raven. You can experiment with the stepover value to produce whatever gradient you’d like in your project. Take a look at this: instagram.com/p/Chspwt8vndJ/?igshid=NzBmMjdhZWRiYQ==
      The “line width” is predetermined by the bit. 90° digs deeper than a 120°. Both produce relatively fine lines. The amount the bit is able to dig into the material depends on the spring tension (as adjusted by you) and the hardness of the material being engraved. Experience will be your guide.
      As to the angle, I find a 30° infill pleasing. And I’ve also mixed infills on projects to produce contrast.

    shouldn't the diamond tip be conductive or is there something different with this diamond

      A quick Google search shows that most diamonds are not electrically conductive, so no, there is nothing different with this one.

    Come on Winston, glass is machinable. The trick is a water pool and a diamond coated bit. Give it a try !

      You can machine glass with conventional carbide end mills with the correct speeds and feeds. Stefan Gotteswinter has a video on here on TH-cam showing how.

      To a point yes. Depends on “how uneven” and the relative zero of the bit. The surface need not be 100% flat flat.

    Just ordered a set. Has anyone tried it with Frisket Film or Transfer Tape for Vinyl?

      I doubt it will work at all with such products. Definitely not with vinyl! I've never handled or know what Frisket film or transfer tape is, but for diamond drag engraving, you need a hard surface to engrave into. The tool is pressed onto the piece and something like vinyl is only going to tear.

    Is this tool suitable for PCB isolation routing ?

      We can't guarantee it would consistently break through the copper skin on a PCB. A tool like this will partly scrape material away, but also partly deform material out of the way. Mechanical engraving with a rotating tool is the most reliable way to do it.

    2:57 its fine paper allready invented its bout 0.1mm. when you feel paper start drag under tool you know you 0.1mm or less from your part.
    try cut. if nothing hppen lower z 0.05 cut. if not happen lower z 0.025 and so on until you see. you just cut propable less than you last change LOL
    but you can set z0.1 0 it will hit OR use 0.01 thin shim even more acurate
    i bought one of these for writing plates you see on every machine back corner. kinda same but to some bridge thingy lol.
    we have used 2mm ball nose mill and 0.05 depth would be so good looking but guys do it 0.3 whaaat friiking burs.
    machine rpm not even go over 6000 so think how slow feed is yeah. hope this make writing faster LOL
    i used my own money buy tool for company LOL when boss is cheap how much 2mm ball nose cost 8 bucks? ho many we broke this cost 30 lol
    and no need be that acurate on z bcoz aluminum plane is allmost eveytime bit curved and guys not pump plate down whaaat.
    i make setup and pump plate down. they not pump it and it go deeper YUAK i would not even sell that quality lol.
    next i might buy heimer zero tool bcoz boss is cheap.
    i can measure everything better on my home cnc router than on company huge 40k cnc machine bcoz there is nothing
    i have even make own custom program that write text no need CAM do same thing allover again when serial number change or date lol. just change variable and hit cycle start BOOM
