I had never bought a pair of moc toes before, but I always loved the look of Thorogood's boots ever since I first tried them on at a Duluth, I believe. Just a few weeks ago, I decided I need to pick up a pair of moc toes, so I scoured ebay looking for Thorogoods and found some lightly used Field N Forest boots (with the leaf logo). From the little research I did, they're Fleet Farm's brand and the ones I got were made by Thorogood. So far, I've really enjoyed them, but it doesn't look like Fleet Farm sells them anymore. with your expertise, I'd like to see you get your hands on a pair, if possible, and offer your opinion if I made a good pick or not. All in, it cost me about $95, and all I did was a quick clean, conditioning and swapped the insoles.

I have to comment: This video could really have used a comparison of the lasts and sizing! Even just a rough idea of "this one is narrow, this one is wide, this one has a taller toebox, this one is for thin/thick ankles" etc. I think that's after all probably much more important than most other specs. And even though you can't fit a shoe through a TH-cam video, it might help people orient themselves a bit.
Other than that, I loved it and thanks for all the hard work!

Yeah, it seems the current Perrys are different since they appeared on a Rose Anvil Tier list. Mostly the shank placement and the counter, which got the leather upgrade as far as I came to learn.
Would love an actual update on the now 2y old tier list video.
Love your insights, this is so useful for navigating the space to pick your own price\value point when spending between 200 and 500 stones on a pair, you just don't want to regret an expense like this, when you're not collecting them, but try to establish a minimalists wardrobe.

Around 5 or so years ago I bought a pair of of Golden Fox without knowing anything about boots at all. They were 70 bucks. I was starting an indoor production environment job. Those things lasted close to about 3 years of 40-50 hour work weeks before I finally retired them. If the build quality is 'decent' like it was, those things should be great for someone new to wearing boots everyday on the clock, and won't break the bank.

I used Rose Anvil's recommendations for buying a good-quality "work boot" and chose the Rock Rooster boot but I bought the boots I wanted. These are the 8" Mantua (dark brown) leather soft-toe mock boots. These boots were listed on Amazon for $129.99 and delivered to my door for $139.74. They came with an extra pair of woven fabric laces, and are a rich brown color. After unboxing and lacing them up I immediately put them on and must say that they felt very good, fitting well, "right out of the box". 2 thumbs up. I intend to break these boots in and will let you know my feelings on them. Oh "side note" I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and grew through many good quality 8" leather boots growing up. I am also a former member of the U.S. military serving in the Navy & Army, so I do know about proper footwear. I enjoy your website a lot and look forward to new additions.

The rock roosters are not a long lasting boot. I bought a pair just over a year ago, and within the last 4 months the stitching has failed, and the leather has started to get holes in it. The counter cover came apart pretty early on, but was hardly an issue. The incredibly soft metal on the eyelets likes to bend and change shape, requiring manually bending them back to be able to tie your shoes again, not to mention eating through your laces. They go through a set of ironlaces every 6 months or so.
Back when this was $99, this was more than acceptable, but now at $120, I'm probably going to spend a little more and get the Georgias.

Question for Rose Anvil; are there any US made, work boots with toe cap (preferably composite but would take steel/alloy), that have zipper sides? I work offshore and part of the requirement for us is that we must have zipper sides for quick removal of the boot if we happen to man overboard.
Price range isn't an issue but I would love to find a quality boot that suits.

So, I have extremely deformed feet due to medical condition and the shoes are most important thing in my life, because without them I can not even stand. After years of exploring and spending thousands of dollars on different types of shoes and hiking boot, etc. I ended up with KEEN Utility San Jose 6inch Soft Toe Wedge Work Boots (for women) and been wearing them every day for the last 9 month and for the first time in my life I am happy. Every morning I f**ing feel happy to put them on 😁 Sooo, it would be cool to see what's inside and how you would rank them, because I really want to know what to expect from them in the future (I already got the second pair, just in case 😆)

Man i think your hating on the golden fox to much. I have three pairs and love them. Iv never had the foam problem you have with that pair. And the sole on that boot is polyurethane not foam. And it actually last quite awhile. And they have unlined modles with leather welts as well. I seriously believe you cant get a better boot for the price point.
