Thanks for this video! I work in enforcing safety regulations and it breaks my heart to write up a guy because his new boots are falling apart after a couple of months on the job. So many laborers are young guys, guys out of rehab or prison, low wage earners, immigrants, non-union, etc that just can't afford American made boots. Plus none of these guys have medical benefits if they get sore feet and knees from cheap boots. Only a handful of workers get $200 every two or three years towards the purchase of a new boot. That's reality in America and not much better up in Canada. The only guys wearing the horse hide $1000 work boots are the execs that come down to the shop floor from their carpeted offices for the Christmas speech and want to show they wear work boots too. The steel toe version of these boots are still twice the price of the Walmart boots but I think are still attainable for a minimum wage laborer and something I can recommend to them instead of just reprimanding them.
I have never heard of someone written up for that. Sounds like a you problem. But I'm glad you're getting paid to make the problem worse on those individuals you just explained
It's depressing that a company would rather pay someone to harass its employees about their equipment not being good enough instead of supplying them with the necessary safety equipment to do their jobs....
So true. Many people can't afford high priced footwear. Washing dishes at Panda Express is not enough to buy Shell Cordovan Alden and Viberg. I wear this style of boot from Sears DieHard. My cobbler cuts off most of the crappy sole. Then sands it down to the crappy midsole. That allows him to glue on a new wedge sole.
Golden fox won for me with the leather quality and looks at $89 - $30 less than rockrooster ! I just don't care for the pebble finish on the rockrooster
You doing a real solid for so many out there that either can’t afford something pricier or are looking to maybe try something out to see if they like the style before upgrading. Great job.
I've had both boots and I'm not gonna lie. I like the golden fox better. Also there are golden foxes with no lining and leather welts for 120. I've been wearing a pair of my golden fox on the construction sights for a little over a year and they are holding up great.
You should do a review of Duradero moc toe boots. They sell for $175 on their website and often have a $50 discount. I bought myself a pair about 6 months ago and really like them. As a bonus, they come with a free resole when they wear out. Duradero boots are made in Mexico.
I've had my pair of rockrooster for almost two years and still going strong, i paid 86 bucks, got them on sale on amazon best boot i had for the price, wear them 5 to 6 days a week im a union carpenter, framing and drywall mostly... and they still going strong, used to wear thorogoods and was looking for a cheaper option back then.. definitely found it,,, and oh yeah comfortable from the get go... I'm a 230 lbs guy.
I like the detailed analysis in the longer format and am happy to see cheaper boots cut apart as well as pricier ones. It is the only way to know for sure what you're paying for. Even cheap boots interest me way more than all the crappy sneakers. It's insane that these boots made from acceptable leather are cheaper than many of the shitty sneakers cut apart in the main channel!
I have had a pair of the Golden Fox Boondockers for about 6 years. I wear them on average one day a week. For the price, they were definitely a good value. They don't have the foam collar and lining like these, just bare leather, with the cotton lining in the vamp. They still look good, and while I usually just wear them around town, I have gone for short hikes in them and worked in them a little. They are super comfortable and judging by how they are wearing, I still have half their life left.
The rock roosters look a lot like the old Sears diehard boots. I really wanted a pair of the die hards as a teenager but couldn't afford it. Eventually I by the time I could afford a pair they had become crap and I never bought a pair. These days I won't touch Chinese footwear and am a Thorogood lover. I'm not buying, but I'm glad there's something out there to fill the hole left by the popular Sears Diehard boots.
Great video as always. I've been wearing the rockrooster boots now for several months, and I like the insole. I'm 220 lb and I've had no issues with it. Maybe offering to isn't for everyone, but it really does help with my plantar fasciitis. I log and do dirt work, and had bought these as a cheap boot with a more comfortable sole for operating. I do think they could offer a wider toe box but other than that I'm satisfied with it.
Yeah, I coincidentally needed a new set of work boots almost exactly when the newer rockrooster review came out. It happened to be almost exactly what I was looking for at a good price.
I have worked around and with plenty of people who view a $100 boot as aspirational, been there a time or too myself, so the fact that someine knowledgeable is bothering to put out information on lower end boots is huge. A lot of people who comment on here act like if you buy cheap you are stupid and seem to forget that many are poor, down on their luck or just starting out. Thanks for putting out the information so that people who have more of a choice can make a more informed choice.
I just need something for standing on concrete. My Jim Green African Rangers are awesome, and with essentially NO padding, so shape is important... Like a bike seat... Padding isn't always your friend.
Add some Dr Scholl's inserts, they upgrade the shoes exponentially! I put them in my regular African Rangers, Razorback safety toes, and Barefoot African Rangers. If I am being honest, the Barefoot ARs don't need the insert due to the leather midsole, but I'm old and want extra thicc squish.
@@williamarodrigues6971 I'm old AND fat... I still prefer being barefoot most of the time, but I also moto commute, so I need something waterproof... Riding boots are okay, but once I get to work, I just want something that can get me through a day on a hard floor, while mostly doing light manufacturing... I had some Keen moc toes they no longer make, and honesty just want something dirt cheap to leave at work.
Just wanted to say thank you for making this kind of content. Been following your other channel for a while now and I really appreciate your dedication and hard work. I’m a maintenance worker at a nursing home/skilled nursing facility and spend roughly 50ish hours a week on my feet on hard floors. Before discovering your channel I wasted money on two separate pairs of junk boots from Walmart and Amazon that didn’t last 4 months each, I decided to try a pair of Diehard moc toe boots. Been using them for the past year and a half give or take and they are actually holding up just fine. After this video I’m considering trying out a pair of rock roosters just to see what they’re about. Anyways thanks again, you’ve earned another subscriber.
This video is very much appreciated. I could elaborate, but I won't. Just know that there are lots of young men and women out there who need choices in honestly made boots and gear instead of the bullshit. Please do more of these.
The Golden Fox insole are EXTREMELY comfortable. I have to stand on my feet when giving classes and use the Golden Fox insoles in my other boots, which include Redwings and Allen Edmonds. I live in Brasil and REALLY wish that Amazon would sell them separately - indeed as Golden Fox does.
The Vibram 377K soles (with the yellow logo) are made with their Newflex blown rubber sole compound. Supposedly lighter than the original Cristy wedge (4014).
Getting ready to take the plunge on the Rock Rooster 🐓. Don’t need it for any type of work. I just like the aesthetics of the boots 🥾 when I wear my jeans and chinos. Thanks for the video. The Golden Fox boots do look better

I just bought the golden foxes and I'm a fan. I've only ever owned Pajar Trooper boots which are extremely comfortable but in a higher price range Definitely comfortable enough for a casual boot Also the rock roosters are extremely expensive in Canada for what you get $200-$250...
One comment on the memory foam insert on the Rock Rooster - I find memory foam is terrible at holding heat. Every memory foam pillow I have had was a sweat bath, and if that insert is anything like those memory foam pillows, I would think it would retain heat much more than the Golden Fox insert. Just saying.
The golden fox boots in your thumbnail has a more supple buttersoft leather than the ones in the actual video. Its thier higher end version . I'm local to the warehouse and allow the public to buy at certain hours on business days. I have quite a few golden fox boots and 2 pairs of heritage redwing mocs. Goldenfox hands down are more comfortable. the feel more like a hightop sneaker than a boot. But they are more bulkier thats for sure
I love these cheaper ones, but I’m looking to supplement my two Thorogoods with the Danner Power Forman and I’d love to see you tear these $450 boots beforehand to see how they stack up!
The golden fox boots you have in your thumb nail picture is not the boot that cost $89 , the ones you have in your thumb nail cost around $120 something dollars I just ordered me a pair, great video though.
Im half way through and i still prefer the goldenfox as for 1....it cheaper. 2...i dont care about resoleing them as even if they only last you 2 winters/years before you buy a new pair....its still saves you money over $250 boots that need a $100 fix every 2 years. Now if you need boots for hard work, then these might not last long enough to be cheaper than the $250 ones. But for people who just want a casual winter boot that is decently made and looks good. I think both of these are a good choice. But me, the cheaper goldenfox look more casual. If the rockrooster made a not so tall version, i might consider paying the extra $35.
I'm going to disagree on the toe lining. The coolmax in the rockrooster is a branded product developed by dupont (and much like with vibram, if they claimed to use it and they didn't I'd expect them to be sued). While I sort of also doubt that its properties will have any useful value here, I would expect it to last longer than the non-name liner in the Golden Fox.
Maybe this is just me, but I'm confused as to why someone would put white outsoles on a work boot. If you're doing any kind of real work that's gonna look terrible in under a day. Even if you aren't doing any work they'll look terrible with a quickness. I bought a pair of white shoes a couple months ago & they're already covered with random scuffs everywhere. Lmk what I'm missing here
That might be the natural color of the material or just the cheapest way to "color" the stuff during mfg'ing. I doubt it is an intended fashion choice.
Hey can you check out the Eddie Bauer K-6 boot? It's a reintroduction of their old hiking boot from 1964. They retail for $220 and I wonder if they're a real contender to the Danner mountain light boot.
I think the thickness of the cork is an obvious critique of RockRooster compared to more expensive boots, but is there really a difference between sheet and hot cork?
Sheet cork is actually considered to be better quality than hot cork all else being equal. It has a more consistent composition, and is generally more solid.
I've worked in Red Wings for the last five years, but recently got some Rockrooster Norwoods with the steel toe through work (free boots). They're probably the most comfortable boots I've ever worn straight out of the box. Zero break in period. That being said, they've been shelved after two months. The QC is awful. Both boots had weird glue threads on them that discolored the leather a little, not the end of the world for a work boot. The tongues are sewn in a way that they don't stay in place. They shift almost immediately to the side, exposing your foot. Huge safety issue. The left and right boots were different colors. Just slightly off, but again, they're work boots and it didn't bother me that much. The steel toes also showed through the leather, much worse on the right boot. Not a deal breaker, but a little disappointing. The two main things, however, are that the right boot rubs on my pinky toe ever so slightly. Not bad enough to blister, but enough to make me hate wearing them after about six hours or so. It's also developed an extremely loud squeak in the sole every time I move. Between the annoying toe rub and the squeak, I can't keep wearing them. They're also starting to show some signs of wear after just two months. I'm not 100% sure they'll make it the whole year. Next year, I'm paying the difference and getting some Thorogoods.
Has anyone ever checked out Golden Fox's made in USA line? I was just looking @ the website & they have a chucka, & 2 different moc toe models. One with a stormwelt & one with a flat welt.
Cheaper PU tends to be cheaper polyester based PU while more durable PU is polyether. I'd go with your guess that these are cheaper PU. I'm going to say the vamp (toe area) lining in the GF is a cheap knock-off of Faytex Fabrics Cambrelle. Knock-off are usually not as breathable or durable by their cost-cutting nature, but this is an unknown here of course. I really don't like the heel area lining of the GF. It's another this time unknown synthetic fabric backed by what you proved was terrible foam. Both have machine sewn crimped construction moc-toes by the look. The Red Wing with a hand sewn two-piece vamp is not only way superior in craftsmanship, but has the best moc-toe appearance by far. You can't get away from: you get what you pay for. I will say I was surprised by the quality and appearance of the GF leather too, so it's too bad they pretty much negated that with the inferior linings, crappy lasting board, and likely polyester PU sole that in spite of being PU is probably susceptible to hydrolysis failure over time as why wouldn't they choose the cheaper PU even though I can't say.
@jimmylarge1148 I would get them if I didn't already have wolverine I90s I bought a few years ago because I needed a metal free boot with a composite safety toe for working around MRI machines
Do you guys not have DeWalt boots in the states? I spent like £35 on a pair their 'builder' safety boots, still using them 4 years later, even after lots of messy industrial site work
On the golden fox for me the sole was gone after 50 or 60 miles. Bought 2 pairs at that 50 price and still have one and it is wearing out just as fast.
I Bought the Rockroosters, They are ok, But the sole is wearing out REALLY FAST!! not an expert but I boubt the soles are genuine, or perhaps there are various grades ? if so than this is the lower grade for sure. 10 months of wear in only 2 months, I only boght them to wear while my other boots are at the fix it pace.🥴
3:45- why do you have to add a clip of that poor guy doing a resole on the Irish settlers when you talk about somebody doing a homemade job on a sole?😮😂 That guys is awesome! And he has a legit shop, it's one of my favorites videos... Also, here is a real question. Can you reuse a fake storm welt? Cut out the face part and just use the rest? I have some redwings with a fake storm welt like you pointed out.
I was on Amazon looking at the Golden Fox stuff and came across the Golden Fox 6" Boondocker Service Boot Pro, it would be cool if you took a look at these in a future video ?
Not a fan of the foam in the tongue of the golden fox. I hate to buy Chinese and I hate Amazon, but I do always keep a spare boot in the truck, cause it has happened before... so the RR might not be bad for that, tho i do wish it was a hot cork filled, i mean how much would that really rais the price? But as said you probably wont feel it, I just worry about the pieces going over each other cause an annoying high spot. The other part is being caught with Chinese boots on a union jobsite, with the money we make, Thorogoods are the most common but I've been wearing them for 10 years now so about the length of my career, so I may try something new eventually. Once I get a place to work as a home company and not worry about a lay off I'll buy a PNW boot. I mean if a take $300 from my check for 2 weeks i could get a pair and still have $1,000 a week to work with. I am tired of the politics tho... If you read all this, I'm proud of you.
Let's be honest....sometimes we just pay more for the brand name not for "better quality". I have Clarks Boots who are much better made and whever cheaper than some more expensive 200-250€ boots who where just hard and uncomfortable. The feeling of a shoe on the feet is also highly subjective. What's soft and comfy for one can be too firm and heavy for another one.

I have the unlined golden fox been good for me
Has anyone ever checked out Golden Fox's made in USA line? I was just looking @ the website & they have a chucka, & 2 different moc toe models. One with a stormwelt & one with a flat welt.
Wheres wolverine at... man I love my moc toe wolvies.. super comfy
Great video. Budget moc boots definitely have a place. I see you're not a fan of Portland Leather haha.
Redwing 4420 would be cool to see cut open after mocktober
Great video!!! I hope you get the wolverine workboots into the mix for moctober
Go with the thorogoods.
@jimmylarge1148 I would get them if I didn't already have wolverine I90s I bought a few years ago because I needed a metal free boot with a composite safety toe for working around MRI machines
Do you guys not have DeWalt boots in the states? I spent like £35 on a pair their 'builder' safety boots, still using them 4 years later, even after lots of messy industrial site work
The roosters just have a cleaner upper shape.
I wear the non-moc toe Skechers Burgin-Tarlac work boot for working around the house. Project Farm was impressed with this $40 boot.
On the golden fox for me the sole was gone after 50 or 60 miles. Bought 2 pairs at that 50 price and still have one and it is wearing out just as fast.
I have no idea what is dropping on Nov 2 but I'm interested.
I don't wear my Golden Foxes to work. I wear them in casual style. If I spent top dollar for boots, they'd have to be making me some money.
Can you please review Men's Redwood Falls Waterproof Moc-Toe Boot. I have a pair and they are super comfortable and pretty decent construction. Thanks
I Bought the Rockroosters, They are ok, But the sole is wearing out REALLY FAST!! not an expert but I boubt the soles are genuine, or perhaps there are various grades ? if so than this is the lower grade for sure. 10 months of wear in only 2 months, I only boght them to wear while my other boots are at the fix it pace.🥴
can you do a list of your favorite heritage style hiking/hunting boots?
They get the vibram outsole on a $120 cause the sole is a copy and not a real vibram outsole. The real vibram outsoles are $120 on their own.
Please review. Bonanza boot and duradero
3:45- why do you have to add a clip of that poor guy doing a resole on the Irish settlers when you talk about somebody doing a homemade job on a sole?😮😂
That guys is awesome! And he has a legit shop, it's one of my favorites videos... Also, here is a real question. Can you reuse a fake storm welt? Cut out the face part and just use the rest? I have some redwings with a fake storm welt like you pointed out.
Golden fox does make a high quality boot it's almost 200 bucks, but they are a good cheap boot
No one in Australia (and I'm Australian) knows or speaks about Rockrooster.....Interesting. Maybe I missed it.
those thumbnails hurt my brain lol
How do these compare to the Timberland Pro Gridworks Moc Toe? Have you done a review on any of the Timberland Pro Moc Toe boots?
These are now suffering from the youtube tax. Price increases across the board.
Video! Would you do an entry level wolverine moc toe boots? They are about $80, not sure if they are good. Thank you in advance!
Test the boot on the picture if you look at the golden fox it’s not the same boot tested vs the picture …
This has nothing to do with my October but could you review the Wesco boots?
I see a lot people wearing the Wolverine Moc toe.. theyre cheap in price also.. have you ever cut those??
The steel toe rock rooster's dont have the tumbled leather.
Hey could you review the RedHead 61 series wp chukkas in the future
I'd really like to see the Redwing 405/411's. I have them now and they're delaminating :(
Take them back to the Red Wing store. They have a 1 year warranty.
can you do the women's redwing moc toe? thanks!
What are your thoughts on the Eddie Bauer Severson Moc Toe?
