That series was rough but we knew what was going on. We was very upset at our signings those few years and witnessed Kobe carry the Lakers to the playoffs. As for Lakers down time, if we're not competing for a title, it's not even worth our time to get excited. Only 2 decades in NBA history that Lakers wasn't a juggernaut. I question anyone who undervalue the success of that franchise. This is why fans wasn't tripping on Kobe like people expected them too. Lakers play for titles not inevitable eliminations.

That team ended up in the 8th seed barely and while I understand they had a few injuries here or there, they overwhelmingly underachieved and let's not get it twisted it is in large because of leadership style of Kobe, amongst other things of course. They were projected to go to finals and face-off with Heat and Bron, but they got swept in the first round by Spurs and even though Kobe did not play in that series, I do not think it would have been much different since that entire season they were looking borderline awful.

Kobe only has 12 such seasons whilst Duncan has 18 such season with the exception being the lock out season.
All nba defense most all time is Tim Duncan 15 to Kobe 12....Kobe has 9 first teams to Tim’s 8. And Tim was named to 13 straight all defensive teams most consecutive all time.
All NBA both have 15 Kobe again has only one more first team then Duncan. The 3 peat and back to backs is really a good plus. But what about Tim who won his first ring in his second year and was without a doubt the best player and leader on his team... the same can’t be said about Kobe, who sat on the bench for his first 2 years and then won with shaq as the best player and leader of the team.??? When Kobe was at the peak of his prim he still wasn’t as good as mj so I wouldn’t call that unprecedented nor would the people who vote in mvps that’s why he only got one lol...and last but not least the mj comparisons come from a aesthetic point of view meaning it was pretty to the eye because he looked like him, but when you compare Kobe was an efficient knock off... that’s why most People who understand the game in a deeper level that oh that looked cool knows that Kobe is in the bottom 5 of the top 10 not the top 5 .

This is one of those endlessly debatable questions because there is no wrong answer. Both careers were so great, both players were so brilliant, both stars really sum up the values of where their team is from.
If I were drafting to build a team, give me Duncan. I think he'll be much easier to build a winner around.

Duncan had a better career, more regular season MVPS, more finals MVPs, a better finals record 5-1. The only loss was the miracle Ray Allen shot. Never missed the playoffs, etc. His career was truly great. He top 10 all time. Kobe was a great competitor, with an incredible work ethic. His problem was he couldn’t shoot. Both great players . I feel like it’s disrespectful for them to be trying to diminish Kobe in a way right before he’s about to get inducted. They could’ve saved that conversation for another time. However, I’m definitely taking Kobe’s career. More iconic and his resume is great as well. Not to mention, head to head, Kobe almost always balled on Timmy and the Spurs in the playoffs, even after Shaq left.

@@hardwoodthought1213 No one said “better”. I said I’d rather have his career because he was more iconic and his resume is also great. Your head to head comparison isn’t good because neither Nash nor Dirk have a resume comparable to Kobe’s, whereas Kobe and Duncan have comparable resumes. That’s like saying if Kobe and Lebron played each other in the finals the results wouldn’t matter when comparing their careers. That would absolutely matter.

@@hardwoodthought1213 that’s not necessarily true. A career goes beyond the hardware, which is why Chris mentioned Kobe being more iconic. Even comparing hardware though, it’s not like it’s not close. I wouldn’t argue with anyone who says Duncan had a better career, but Kobe has a great one as well, and they both have certain accolades the other doesn’t. Also, that doesn’t matter. Even with different positions, you just have to look at who showed up the most and got it done. Ofcourse it’s easier to compare if it’s the same position, but you can compare different positions. Otherwise, no one would have Jordan VS Bron debates, even though they’re two completely different players.

Duncan all day every day. He didn't want to be the guy who goes out on a retirement tour chucking up 50 shots. He was busy winning 50+ (60+ actually) games as usual looking for a title. Won 5 titles in 3 different decades playing a huge variety of team styles.

Kobe fans don’t want to admit this but Kobe wasn’t “Iconic” until he died prematurely. Broussard lied when he said, “It’s not just because he died” it is 100% because he died. Players and fans had love for Kobe, but it changed and the overall narrative changed (revisionist history) when Kobe died. Kobe was an aloof guy, he didn’t “lead the in-crowd” another lie by Broussard(revisionist history). ESPN did a poll between Kobe and Tim, while Kobe was alive, about who had the better career and Tim won. With all of that said Kobe was an animal. One of my favorite players
