Watering Microgreens for Easy Germination! Mustard Micros

  • As most of you know, we like to mist our crops twice a day during the germination process... well, that can be a lot of work when you have a few full racks growing 😓
    🧐Misting twice daily for each tray in germination is time-consuming, but is there an advantage to doing so?
    ✅We tested this on 4 trays: All the trays were seeded and grown the exact same, with only one difference, the watering schedules... Tray 1 was misted once a day, Tray 2 was misted twice a day like we usually do, Tray 3 was misted every other day and lastly Tray 4 was given only ONE heavy watering.
    We love to continually experiment with our methods to see what else we can learn from these great crops!!🌱🌱🌱
    Hope y'all enjoy our new video! 🌱👩‍🌾👨‍

    • @OnTheGrow

      The microgreens are particular about their climate and light sources. Too much light and they don’t grow well. We are going to be doing more tests for outdoors as soon as we move into our new house in a few days!
      Also, the cost the run the lights inside are really quite cheap. But free light is best like you said! Stay tuned for more indoor vs outdoor test on microgreens!

    Great video. One factor that you forgot to mention. I grow basic salad mix exclusively and I stopped multiple watering because of the number of seeds that were sticking to top. Enjoyed the test and can see where watering/ misting once per day would save a lot of time and energy. Great Job. One question. Why would you spend the extra money for grow mats verses coco coir? That seems to be counter productive for your profit margins. I look forward to your answer. It is because of your videos that we have started microgreens as a second income stream to our mushrooms business.

    Good day! I need your advice on type of filtered water used for Microgreens.
    Should I use RO (reverse osmosis) or is it better to use Alkaline mineral water?
    Kindly advise.
    Thanks a million in advance. 😀🙏

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends... personally I would try one tray of each and see which I like more! The RO water is completely stripped of minerals so the grow will likely be quite slow. RO is great for adding nutrients back into though. The mineral water should work well, but you likely need to drop the pH slightly on it if it is alkaline. Plants usually prefer water pH around 5.5-6.5.
      Hope that helps!

    From your experience, do you think the heavy soak would be enough even if using the sprouting mats? Or would that tend to dry out the coco coir to the point that additional watering would be needed? Between all the different mediums you’ve used - biostrate, coco, Terrafibre, soil etc....what would you consider your most reliable and easiest to work with when comparing ease of germination? I’m currently trying out terrfibre for the first time after running out of biostrate and being at wits end with mold from soil I’m curious to know what’s worked out for you the most. Thanks guys and cheers!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say Coco Coir. It’s so dang easy... it always gives us solid germination and growth, but we do have to use a little care to not over-water it. Outside of that, it’s by far our current favorite. If you search, you can usually get a good deal on it somewhere and the cost of more expensive Coco’s are usually about $0.78/tray (7-9cups of medium) which is really reasonable for the ease of use.

    I tried coconut coir and while I like it to add water retention on my beds, I hated it as a grow medium for microgreens.

      Why?

      Weird, we’ve tried about 30 different mediums and we keep coming back to Coco. It’s probably the best medium that we’ve tested... Always solid germination and growth from it.

    Do you guys use food grade H2O2 to dilute?Whats the concentration of the food grade H2O2?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We use 3% Food-Grade H2O2. We use 2 TBSP per liter with great results! Increase as needed...

      We love to experiment a lot so we keep trying new things! Soil works great but we get to play more with hydroponic mediums...

      We just looked into this, and the links are all working perfectly fine, and we haven't had anyone else say that they aren't. You might need to clear your browser cookies & cache. Hope that helps!

    How do I know when it's ready for black out?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When everything looks like 90% of the seeds have opened up and are starting to try standing up. That's usually when we put it in

    What exactly is black out?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is putting the plants into a dark place with no resistance so they stretch taller.

    If using soil I think it won't dry out so fast as there is little bits of absorbent wood in there that acts like a sponge

    What about watering once germinated please?

  • @darcyleepearson4416

    Allways water coco to run off, you will be hard pushed to over water coco. At full saturation, coco still holds around 30% more oxygen that soil and for best results pH balance yer water, remember you are also replacing air in the soil too, try an experiment of watering once a day regardless of how wet the coco is... You might be surprised 💚

    I think you should have taken the experiment to the end and then weighed the finished product. That's where you can really tell. The camera angle I get doesn't necessarily coincide with what you're seeing from above. The only way to really tell is to way the final products. Just my $0.02.
