    would some sort of humidity dome help eliminate the need for a weight? Maybe make a humidity locked shelf or something idk. just curious if that would be equivilent to a weight+tray on top

    "supposedly" strengthening the stem seems about right, I can vouch at least in my experience growing other plants, I once had an injured tomato seedling that I decided to try and save. The stem was completely busted but still attached by the outer skin so I taped it up with a toothpick. That turned out to be my strongest plant and grew with this incredible knot in the base of the stem where it repaired itself, doing some research told me with a bulkier stem due to damage + repair nutrient transmission and strength were increased greatly. wish I had a pic now the knot grew to like the size of my fist

  • @gapey
    @gapey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Is there a reason you don't cover the seeds with a small amount of coco coir and/or use a humidity dome to hold in moisture?

  • @visitor971
    @visitor971 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Suggestion for first tray - keep an inverted tray on top. This will ensure better humidity and full darkness compared to just adding a paper towel on top. Since it will be inverted there will be no weight on the seeds. It will give a better picture on the pure impact of weight on germination. Great video in any case!

    • @K-Fed
      @K-Fed ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I find it strange that we're using a technique for microgreens that we don't use for germination seeds for other purposes. My germination rate is close to 100%, but I've never used weights for any of my grows. As long as the seeds remain hydrated, in the dark, and the temperature is adequate, healthy seeds will sprout & grow. Just like every other seed, sprinkle them on fresh soilless mix, add a thin layer of soilless mix on top, water, and cover with a humidity tray. As long as your provide enough light and airflow after germination, the spouts will grow vigorously, and will have thick stems.
      There needs to be more scientific proof that adding a weight to the tray somehow produces a better plant or decreases time between sewing and harvest. Right now it just seems like unnecessary work and added complexity based on anecdotal evidence. There are a handful of online sources that suggest weighting microgreens seeds, but they all seem to be copying each others homework and don't provide any side-by-side comparisons. The main benefit of the weight seems to be that it helps remove hulls from larger seeds such as sunflowers.

    • @zanaros2606
      @zanaros2606 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A better experiment would be to use a humidity dome for the tray without weight, so as to keep the humidity in both trays constant...with the weight being the only deciding factor in any differences. I think it's the drying out of seeds in the first tray in this video that drastically affected germination rates, rather than its lack of weight. This can give the illusion that it's the lack of weight that affected germination rates.
      There's another youtube video out there experimenting on Broccoli seeds grown under humidity dome without weight vs weighted tray, and it instead gives very similar germination results. Only slight difference is that seedlings are slightly shorter and thicker in the weighted tray, whereas the one without weight and only the humidity dome are slightly taller but thinner. Taste wise it's the same. In the initial phrase of the humidity dome tray, roots are everywhere on the surface and not driven down as deep, but it adjusts itself after a few days and becomes taller than the other tray.

      I use frosted translucent takeaway containers without holes, I hydrate the coir then half fill the trays, spread the seed, mist heavily then loosely sit the lid on top. They aren't in the dark but not in the sun either, mist twice a day just to keep seeds damp until germination. I've been having success with radishes but haven't really tested any method putting something on top of the seeds.

    I love these experiment/comparison videos because I'm thinking about starting (for my own home eating and my cat's grass) and I want to skip all these steps and these videos really show the reasons for them well. I have a bunch of potting soil and don't really want to buy coco coir, so I'll look to see if you have that comparison and if not, it's a suggestion. For fun, it took me a long time to get that you were saying seed "hull" because it sounds so much like "hole" to my Canadian ear. Also, coir would sound more like cwa to us. :) So informative. Maybe one day, tech will somehow invent telescent (like television for the nose) or teletaste (tv for tongues). Until then, this may not be as easy as it sounds. Whether in the spoken word, written word or even with motion picture and video, flavor is something very difficult to describe. Indeed, the in-mouth experience includes texture, crunch, density and more. Further, many things change flavor under chew, rice for example. Till later, we keep dreaming.

    I'd be curious to see someone do a test where it's fully open air with a fan but gets very regular misting, like every 2-4 hours, then maybe covered overnight. Especially with a crop that might be problematic in terms of disease or mold when covered.

    What do you do with the potting soil/ coconut coir/medium after you harvest the greens? Can you reuse it or do you throw it out and start with fresh soil again?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We compost it in our outdoor compost, then we reuse only in our outdoor beds. The reason being is bacteria and also any left over seeds will sprout up randomly. We've heard of ways to "reuse" it - but it sounds too risky considering how densely you sow microgreens. Instead - we start over fresh when using those grow mediums.
      If you want something reusable, check out the product we sell

    🌱🌱🌱 Thank you So much for all of your *Amazing* videos! I was drawn to this one because I am struggling with mold on my sunnies ... during weighting … I am a beginner who has experimented with probably 10 trials. I always catch it right away, pick out any seeds, and treat with H2O2, but it’s super time-consuming. I started with 5x5 trays and now 10x10, I only get mold during the weighting period. If I could just not use a weight I thought 💭 🤣… So maybe I need to go with a heavier weight? I have four soup cans on a 10 x 10. 🤦🏼‍♀️
    They are so yummy😋 , I’m determined to figure this out!
    Have you guys ever considered consulting? 🤞🏼😉
