Thanks for the info on nutients. I'm starting a microgreen operation on Maui and doing as much research as can on microgreens. I have been manufacturing ormus and selling it farmers market. The residue from the ormus manufacturing became a nutrient supplyment for a few ag experiments I was doing. The product contains a broard spectrum of minerals similar to the ocean solution. I didnt consider addding a supplement to the water . So thanks. Henry on Maui

@@OnTheGrow hi guys. Unfortunately due to the lockdowns I had to stop growing as there was no customers. Now an avid cryptocurrency investor and actually doing quite well with that atm. But who knows I may take micrograms up as a hobby I the future. Stay well 🙏
is a " larger crop" a better tasting crop? can we get a blind taste test panel? - thanks for all your work; you are becoming a great asset to the community
We’re super honest about taste and I feel a blind taste test would be excessive but we could do it. Generally, there is very little difference in taste. As for taller vs shorter, generally, the very small crops have more flavor, but that is because they are in a more adolescent phase of growth. For example, arugula will be very peppery at a smaller/adolescent phase of growth, so we prefer to grow ours out longer to make them more mild in pepper taste. It is really whatever you’re looking for. The main point of adding nutrients is that you get to different “phases” of growth quicker. Sometimes the nutrient will effect the flavor and appearance. It all depends on the crop.

Ok, now I wanna use maxigrow in soil based microgreens, not hydroponic with hemp. In what quantities do I dissolve it? As specifed in the bottle instructions? And in what stage do I spray that solution? Since the beginning? Thank you very much. Subscripted. You are my favorite so far... Humble, sweet and ultraprofessional.
We always use the minimum suggested on the labels! I can't remember exactly for MaxiGro but I think it was around the 1tsp per gallon mark. We begin adding nutrients once the plants are introduced into the light. We noticed that adding nutrients too soon can cause slower germination. So mist them normally with regular water until they are germinated and growing well and then when they are introduced to light, you can begin bottom-watering in the nutrients. Thank you so much for the support! We really appreciate it!

A favourite fertilzer for me is ascophyllium nodosum seaweed or knotted wrack tea find the high level of nitrogen perform fantastically with microgreens
Just discovered your channel. Thanks so much for sharing. I’m excited to learn more about growing micro greens from you! Any episodes where you talk about what type of lights to get?
Thank you so much for the support! We have not yet made a video specifically on lighting, but that is in the works to be one of the first videos for 2020. Right now what we suggest for lights are the 18watt LED's we've been using for a few months with great results. They are 6500K and put out 2,000 lumens each... We try to get an output minimum of 6,000 lumens per shelf so we use 3 of the LED's per shelf. Here's the link to our lighting section of products we've used and works well. It looks like the main lights we use are out of stock so we will try and update with similar lights: www.amazon.com/shop/onthegrowfarms?listId=300RR4HQRM5I9
Thank you so much! Yeah, we really wish there was a viable way to get these analyzed without it costing so much... We’re hoping something pops up so we can do this for the community! Thank you again for the support!
Very interesting, maybe in the future you could also order some lab tests too, to compare if the bigger microgreens are also the richest in nutrients, or if the tiny one, grown on worm compost and ocean solution is maybe the winner in terms of nutrients
Great suggestion! We have actually looked into this, but the nutritional analysis test is $1,000 per test, so it would cost several thousand... it is something we are planning to do, but we need to make sure we can recover the cost... I’d love to know and share for sure!!
These videos are extremely helpful and informative. I began growing wheat grass not to eat personally but to feed my rabbits. I've thought about using Fish Emulsion to see how it affects growth because its always been outstanding with all the outside vegetables I grow. It will just be extremely smelly.
I'm glad to hear that you find our videos to be of value! I completely understand about the fish emulsion. It does smell really, really bad... We have tried it a few times indoors but had mixed results. We are wanting to move away from OceanSolution because they aren't as reliable with their inventory so we may end up trying some fish emulsion and kelp soon!
@@OnTheGrow I ended up trying it and wasn't a fan of it. The growth was not enough to warrant the smells. Do you regrow any of your greens more than once? If so, how do you keep the medium and/or roots from molding. Everyone of mine begin molding after a week.

You can make your castings way more effective if you aerate it over night with a table spoon of molasses. Let pump for 24 hrs. Will save you money in the long run.
So glad you shared your experiment with worm castings; I was wondering if a worm casting tea would be appropriate for microgreens. My concern was whether they might introduce undesirable microbes to an edible. You did not mention this, and since you used a compost tea, rather than a direct to plant contact application, and I know you also water only the roots, my guess is that such a problem is mitigated by these practices. When I had a full garden here in Arizona, I used to feverishly search for worm castings, even making a special trip to the next state over, just to find it because my vegetables, fruits, herbs, roses, and trees loved them so much. I wonder if it might work to add the castings to the Coco Coir medium, then water with Ocean Solution. I may try that, now that I know the worm casting tea can be used on Microgreens. Believe me, in my day, there were plenty of kids that were eating dirt as a regular snack from all those mud pies we used to make, and I grew up in the Midwest, where there are plenty of worms casting their cares into that black soil. As far I know, no one ever died from eating dirt. Appreciate all you do for this community.
Just starting my own microgreen thing, great vid. Going to try a couple little experiments myself with worm castings mixed into peat and coco, also try some marinis kelp fertilizer. See what boosts yield and quality for the best product.

perhaps start using the ocean solutions after a couple of days. When did you notice that the water tray was at its peak development compared to the others? That's when you start applying the solution. ;)
CJ, you could try a wood ash solution added with some source of Nitrogen and pH balanced. Ashes are what's left behind after the removal by burning of all organic matter in a vegetable tissue, wood, on this case. They are well known as a source of potassium, but most likely will hold many more micronutrients as well.
We have not, but I will get some ordered and start some tests for the New Year! We currently get ours from TrueLeafMarket.com and JohnnySeeds.com. We have some that we ordered from Mumm's (sprouting.com) as well that worked great.

I really like your videos, because of how rich in information they are and how many different techniques you are testing. The question for me personally is though, if the amount of nutrient in the plant benefit of the nutrients in the water as well. If it just increases the size (so basically just increasing water inside the plant), people would have to buy more to reap the same benefits. Which is nice for the farmer, but questionable decision out of the customers perspective. Just saying, it would be nice seeing something like this tested as well. (if anyone knows how)
Maybe for the compost tea try a micron mesh bag with castings and guano in water agitate it frequently also keep air stone in water steep for 24 hrs ish

Would love to see a test with seaweed extract or kelp. In nature it is the fastest growing plant i think. Most formulas are full of auxins and cytokinin which are natural plant growth hormones. it also has up to 70 beneficial trace minerals from the sea. Great way to increase quality from my experience(not microgreens). My growing tools are NPK+ micro and macro nutrients+ kelp and vitamins+ carbohydrates(feed bacteria and fungi), amino acids(improve nutrient uptake) and beneficial bacteria. Also from my knowledge, compost teas are rather difficult to get right. You need to have the right bubbling time(too long and beneficial die, too short and not enough are produced), high quality castings that contain beneficial bacteria that can be cultured( not all castings are created equal), right temperature in order to culture the right aerobic microbiology, a hefty air stone that won't get clogged. Pretty sure farms that use compost teas actually take a look at their teas under a microscope to see what they've cultured as it's not always 100% consistent and some teas don't turn out.
Great suggestion!! We tried some kelp in the past, but I don't think I did it right and we ended up getting poor results. I think either I added too much nutrient or something... I will bring the kelp back out for some of our upcoming experiments! Thanks again for the suggestion!!

BRIGHT YELLOW? I had a tray of Red Giant Mustard go really yellow? I suspect the batch of fluid got miscalculated and likely shy of enough CalNitrate. So.. what's the best way to fix & save this tray?
Ooph... I have actually never had mustard go yellow before. I would assume to just add more CalNitrate into your mix if possible, but Microgreens have such a short life that if something major goes wrong, it may take too long to correct the batch. Were you able to get some CalNitrate to it in time? We've got some tests with Masterblend starting today!
I'm using a 2 gr/2gr/1gr + 1 gall of water mix. I suspect what's happening is the coco coir creates a situation where the 'salts" in the coco coir maybe creating an EC and cause a calcium uptake issue for the seedlings. I'm trying to figure out what amount of additional calnitrate I might need to the already existing tray to correct.. I know moving forward I will be pre treating my coco coir pith with calcium nitrate. I've found several sources that have pointed that a fix, but that has to be done before. bummer.

Did you do a taste taste? Or maybe I missed that part.? I did a similar study... nutrients in the soil vs water. Broccoli tasted more true grown in coir only, but lower yield. Just curious, thanks if you are able to answer.
I would have to rewatch this to remember if I taste-tested on film... I don't remember anything being different on the taste on this test though. Sorry I couldn't be of more help on this one!
For increasing the darker green, magnesium, iron and nitrogen are important. If something grows too fast, it could results in deficiency. I think iron would be the lacking part in the ocean solution.

Great question! We do that to help keep the seeds pressed into the grow medium, so that they stay moist and germinate well. Weight also helps to push off the seed hulls that get stuck to the top. All crops will grow without weight, but a lot will benefit from the added weight. We have started listing that on our grow guide section on our website: www.onthegrow.net/growing-guide Hope that helps!

Can I add a little chemical fertiliser (for "coco and soil" supstrats) in coconat supstrat before start growing microplants(than it grow much better i Think),is it safe?
Thank you so much! If I knew, I would tell you! They keep their formula a secret, so I am not really sure what they use exactly, other than it is organic. Here is a link to their website: www.oceansolution.com/product-page/oceansolution-2-0-3
The cotyledons are lighter on the one tray because the nutrient solution probably dropped your ph in the medium (not the actual solution you ph'ed) over time. When feeding substrates u always gotta read runoff and the ph of your standing water in the tray after a day. If it's too high lower the alkalinity of your feed to adjust the medium and standing water runoff/wick water and vice versa
In Australia, we have seasol, it is a root conditioner and said to not be a fertiliser, it does however - stink - BAD. Does Ocean Solution have any negative odour effects?
Great question! OceanSolution does not have a negative smell which is one of the reasons we really enjoy it. It does not smell like kelp or any of the other organic fertilizers that we have tried.

Why not just adding worm castings directly to your growing medium instead of filtering it? That might give you better results. Worth a try? Also, this is such good info for a beginning gardener. Thanks!
Great Suggestion Jessica! We will definitely be trying that soon! This was our first attempt at a "compost tea" and we didn't really enjoy the process :P Thank you so much for the continued support!
I'm willing to bet the worm casting tea didn't do great for the microgreens compared to the Ocean Solution because of not having long enough for bacteria to break it down like you suggested might be the case. When I use sterile compost in sterile soil, it takes a good long while to start really seeing the benefits of it, where in an established soil bed, there is an active bacteria colony ready to break it down.
This is a good experiment.. with two big problems. 1. The size of the seed matters.. small seeds like broccoli and lettuce are going to need nutrients much earlier than things like peas or sunflowers. 2. Days to harvest, again you are picking slower varieties of microgreens. Honestly, I just use nutrients anyway because it is not expensive and it definitely isn't doing any harm.
We suggest using Three 20watt T5 LED’s per shelf. We look for a minimum of 6,000 lumens per shelf. We have used these for a while with great success www.amazon.com/dp/B07F2WMCP2?tag=onamzonthegro-20&linkCode=ic5&ascsubtag=amzn1.infl.us.product&creativeASIN=B07F2WMCP2&ref=exp_onthegrowfarms_dp_vv_d We keep our lights at a distance of 8inches from the top of the tray, while most growers stick to 10 inches from the top of the tray.
Thank you so much! Id like to do that as well, but since this is coming out of our pockets for all this, that is a huge commitment to dedicate 16 trays to a single experiment. If you look at all our experiments, you will notice a pattern though! We also encourage people to do these experiments themselves 🤗 Thanks again for the support! 🌱🌱
Thanks for posting this. I tried a similar experiment with just water side by side with a fertilizer and noticed the same. I have worm compost bins and was wondering.
How about money wise??? is the ocean solution cheap? how much in total do you use if you add it up? come on man these are the important questions! great video btw
Thank you so much for the support! We've answered it a few times in the comments already but basically it adds very little cost. It comes out to about $0.02-$0.50 per tray depending on what nutrient source you use and how you use it... It's insignificant compared to the time-savings and added product weight... It reduces labor tremendously since you can shave several days off a grow and the added weight usually translates to a significant increase in revenue per tray.

All of them have their roots developed enough to get into the water so it should be equal. The last tray that was very far behind on germination was very much at a disadvantage but still managed to catch up.

@@OnTheGrow I wouldn't bother with tea too much! When you make actual worm tea (aerated over a period of time), the whole idea would be to explode the microbial population using a sugar source. That would work great in real soil where microbes have a wonderful function. In your case, you use in inert medium (coco) where microbes will not perform much of a function at all. You might get a bit a leach NPK out of the castings but not more than directly mixing worm castings in coco or peat . That is an experiment i would like to see! Keep experimenting!
@@microfarmer7547 Well I could add aeration and other elements to the worm tea to allow time to build up that bacteria. I will try some with a better compost tea as well as adding worm castings directly to the coco coir. Thanks!

Excited to hear how it works!! Please keep us updated on that! I have been wanting an alternative to OceanSolution... Thank you for the support Henry!

Nice. I'm just starting to grow micro greens and i wondered about this. Question answered!
Thanks Dante! It's a lot of fun to see how different of growth you can get just by changing a few things...
Try lime mixed in your water to help the roots break down minerals so they can feed off the iron in the soil. Or premix in the soil

It looks like the main lights we use are out of stock so we will try and update with similar lights: www.amazon.com/shop/onthegrowfarms?listId=300RR4HQRM5I9
Great work. Getting nutritional analysis would be great but expensive.
@@OnTheGrow Wow, way too expensive!
@@BUSTtheTIVO lol yeah, That's why we haven't done it yet. We'd love to though some time in the future
Great video! Thanks!

It would be interesting seeing Maxigrow and Cal-mag plus combo.
Adding it to our list for the first of 2020 experiments! Great suggestion!
Can you tell me about growing lamps do you sell them? I am trying to learn more about growing Microgreens Thank You
You can make your castings way more effective if you aerate it over night with a table spoon of molasses.
Do you still grow microgreens in AZ and is it just for personal use?

And they are also probably loaded with karrikins, what would speed up the germination process.
Great idea!! We will give this a try on some of our first videos for 2020. Thanks for the suggestion!
Have you ever tried using the Masterblend, Calcium Nitrate, Epsom Salt nutrient mix on the micro greens? Where do you buy your micro green seeds?

Is the ocean solution like seasol or made from fish products and seaweed?
what do you do with the cocopeat soil when the microgreen is harvested?
Great question! Right now we are putting the used soil into our compost so that we can later use it in our garden beds!

Thanks again for the suggestion!!

what concentration was the ocean solution at?
I've found several sources that have pointed that a fix, but that has to be done before. bummer.
@@azhydro9915 Ahhh bummer, well hopefully it works and helps your issue. We've never had that happen, but I imagine its frustrating.
Very interesting !!! Which EC do you apply with Ocean Solution ?
Also if your buy tea instead of castings. Leave the cap off so the microbes and fungi can still get oxygen. Maybe shake the bottle periodically
This is really impressive. Have you done a cost analysis as to whether the added nutrients pay off?
Yes! So we just did that the other day for a video that we're working on... And yes it does pay off. 😁

Is it safe for human consumption to top spray and bottom water Ocean Solution to broccoli microgreens ?
Did you do a taste taste? Or maybe I missed that part.? I did a similar study... nutrients in the soil vs water. Broccoli tasted more true grown in coir only, but lower yield. Just curious, thanks if you are able to answer.
I would have to rewatch this to remember if I taste-tested on film... I don't remember anything being different on the taste on this test though. Sorry I couldn't be of more help on this one!
For increasing the darker green, magnesium, iron and nitrogen are important.
If something grows too fast, it could results in deficiency.

why we add blackout weight? is it necessary for all seeds?
Great question! We do that to help keep the seeds pressed into the grow medium, so that they stay moist and germinate well. Weight also helps to push off the seed hulls that get stuck to the top. All crops will grow without weight, but a lot will benefit from the added weight. We have started listing that on our grow guide section on our website: www.onthegrow.net/growing-guide

What was the seeding rate
In Australia, we have seasol, it is a root conditioner and said to not be a fertiliser, it does however - stink - BAD. Does Ocean Solution have any negative odour effects?
Great question! OceanSolution does not have a negative smell which is one of the reasons we really enjoy it. It does not smell like kelp or any of the other organic fertilizers that we have tried.
Just me. Seasol now make a hydroponic fertiliser with no odour.

Why not just adding worm castings directly to your growing medium instead of filtering it? That might give you better results. Worth a try? Also, this is such good info for a beginning gardener. Thanks!
Great Suggestion Jessica! We will definitely be trying that soon! This was our first attempt at a "compost tea" and we didn't really enjoy the process :P
Thank you so much for the continued support!
What kind of lights do you use for your racks?
We suggest using Three 20watt T5 LED’s per shelf. We look for a minimum of 6,000 lumens per shelf. We have used these for a while with great success www.amazon.com/dp/B07F2WMCP2?tag=onamzonthegro-20&linkCode=ic5&ascsubtag=amzn1.infl.us.product&creativeASIN=B07F2WMCP2&ref=exp_onthegrowfarms_dp_vv_d We keep our lights at a distance of 8inches from the top of the tray, while most growers stick to 10 inches from the top of the tray.
Great experiment. I would love to see this performed with a greater sample set such as 4 trays per nutrient etc.
Thank you so much! Id like to do that as well, but since this is coming out of our pockets for all this, that is a huge commitment to dedicate 16 trays to a single experiment. If you look at all our experiments, you will notice a pattern though!
We also encourage people to do these experiments themselves 🤗
Thanks again for the support! 🌱🌱
Thanks for posting this. I tried a similar experiment with just water side by side with a fertilizer and noticed the same. I have worm compost bins and was wondering.
Test is affected by nutrient ?
I have planted moong microgeen in water but there were test like grass.what happens if i added micronutrients.??
Thank you so much for the support Panchal Hitesh!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄
Hi, may I ask when do you use coco coir vs terrafibre? Is there a specific seed that respond best for any of the two medium?
great experiment and results! experimented with CO2 to improve photosynthesis?
How about money wise??? is the ocean solution cheap? how much in total do you use if you add it up? come on man these are the important questions!
great video btw
Thank you so much for the support! We've answered it a few times in the comments already but basically it adds very little cost. It comes out to about $0.02-$0.50 per tray depending on what nutrient source you use and how you use it... It's insignificant compared to the time-savings and added product weight... It reduces labor tremendously since you can shave several days off a grow and the added weight usually translates to a significant increase in revenue per tray.
@@OnTheGrow Ok good to know, thanks for answering =)

Sir pls Tamil transhashan
Does the water only one reach the same size as the nutrient one after another week?
All of them have their roots developed enough to get into the water so it should be equal. The last tray that was very far behind on germination was very much at a disadvantage but still managed to catch up.
@@OnTheGrow how long would it take for the water only one to reach the size of the best nutrient one?
Where are you buying the seeds from? I checked the Amazon link but couldn't find the seeds...thanks in advance for your reply
Great question, we answered it on your other post!

You didn’t tell us how much it how many times you fed nutrients And how many times you applied it
i sent pic to you of our grow they look better with the new light just not as full as yours. I am only using tap water i am just getting started.
Agree 100%! Proof is in the microgreens. I think your worm tea should be activated. Nonetheless great job.
Thank you so much for the support! I'll try adding a little more to the compost tea to see if I can get better results.
Thanks!
Can I use Mother Plant fertilizer instead of ocean solution.
🙂Thank you so much for the support susan tellez!! We are constantly on the look out for great products when we get to town!!!😄 We'll have to research that one...what was your source!
