I still thing Thieves in Time was alright gameplay wise for the most part, it was the story that they really missed the mark, I really enjoyed how Sly 3 made Sly's ancestors have the mystique about them and made them feel like important and serious historical figures but Thieves in Time just turned them all into a bunch of goof balls.

TiT could have improved upon what 3 brought to the table and refine it with the developments seen from the Future Series of R&C. But instead, it did a Wrath of Cortex. Better graphics yet the gameplay is worse.

In regards to the end message of Sly 2, Monkey Island 2 had a similar end credits message along the lines of "Go outside and do something constructive" back in 1991...so video games have been telling you to touch grass since the 90s
I've always liked sly 1 the most for how much it feels like a classic platformer. One hit deaths, huge emphasis on platforming, and things like the punishing master thief sprint. Fully expected sly 1 to have the most deaths here, but glad you were able to enjoy the whole series!
Sly cooper actually got me into games, my literal first 3D story mode game I ever played. Prior to that I had only played sidescrollers and 2D fighter so I’ll be forever grateful to the series
With the one guard that kept dying on the blimp in Sly 2, I believe the jetpack guards have friendly fire with their jetpack flames, which may be why you kept failing that mission.

I didn’t realize this until afterwards, but you dodge Rajan’s electric flor attack by standing on the lily pads in the water. The reason I never figured it out it because I never happened to be one when he did it, and the one time I managed to avoid it I didn’t noticed it was because I was on the lily pad 😅 Edit : The job failed thing at the end with the last guard you have to steal the key from, it isn’t a glitch, they’re just stupid. The guards in this area for whatever reason kill themselves by tripping off of ledges, and they’re able to damage each other with their fire attacks.
HOLY SHIT??? omg sly cooper jumpscare! im so happy!! u just made my entire day!! i lived long enough to see someone else be normal about penelope turning bad (again) in Sly 4 as if she wasn’t a complete psychopath as the Black Baron in Sly 3, you’re a real one frfr 🥹 sly 4 get so much slack yet it is the culmination of the entire series’s mechanics n stuff, due to budget and time constraints basically the final boss and the egypt episode were cut one way or another for the final boss itself sanzaru only had resources to either make a one big final platforming sequence including all the ancestors or make a big final boss fight against Le Paradox and they picked the former

hated the fourth game in the series. feels like they chose to undo the character growth from the rest of the games to be campy. I want us to get a new game in the franchise, but I want it to be a good entry such as the second or third game in the original trilogy. honestly wouldn't complain about them choosing to ignore the fourth entry so that it never occurred.
For a real Sly 4 without the time travel nonsense (Even by this point, it was becoming overplayed as a trope in platformers), I would go the Godfather Part II by doing a parallel narrative between Sly and Conner Cooper. Both menaced by the same foe with Conner defeating him and getting him arrested during the 80's while Sly puts a stop to him for good in the present. Build off on what we know from 1-3 like a good sequel should.

@Mynostrum I treat the time machine mentioned in 3 like I treat the Instabul reference in 2. It's a thing that exists but not something I'd seriously dedicated a whole plot to and if I were to presume SP's mindset behind the reference, the time machine Bentley built in 3 probably is something very different from what SG did with it. Plus 3's time machine goes forwards in time, not back. So even the way it acts in TiT is as much of a good as Penelope suddenly turning heel like a twist Disney villian and just as stupid. A better plot avenue would have been to touch up on Conner Cooper's lore including giving us information on the lesser known Coopers like Old Sally Cooper from 1 or actually do something with Sly and Carmelita being on the same side. Perhaps fulfil what 2 had missed out on by having the latter be in the Cooper Gang due to the actions of a corrupt Interpol agent, her stumbling on a web of corruption that goes all the way to the top and have her chaser role be given to a new evil Samuel Gerard type character who instead of blasting you with shock bolts, he fires bullets and rockets. Maybe ape that chase scene out of Batman Year One. Something that takes Sly and his friends in new creative directions without needing to call on time travel and without doing the existing characters dirty. Time travel is a little too out there even for a series where magic exists, the way they went about it almost reeks of TMNT III level of time travel logic and there's no reason Thieves in Time couldn't just be a spin off or anthology game about Sly's ancestors. I mean, R&C: A Crack In Time and Sonic Generations were already avaliable on PS3 for platformers with time travel elements and leagues better overall than what we got with TiT. It doesn't use time travel in an interesting way like the former, nor does it use it to have us revisit some old locations like Mesa City from 1 in HD. Imagine we went up against Muggshot from 1 and he plays out the same at the start before suddenly busting out new moves and equipment he never had in the original which would be more exciting than whatever we got in TiT including its "final boss" to put it politely.

They never imply in Sly 3 that it "only goes Forward." Bentley only says "Time will tell, LITERALLY. Because I'm building a time machine to find out." Just means the future adventure involves the machine, does not mean he is gonna go into the future to see what they get up to. Because first, if they can only go Forward, they would be stuck there with no way back. Now, theoretically he could, yes but why ruin the surprise of their future adventures? It would be more fun to go back and meet your ancestors who made everything you know. yes SG handled it POORLY and I would have loved a more ancestor based game, like assassin's Creed level of ancestor play, not just a mission here and there, that should have been Sly getting the odd jobs. Being shown new things they may not have had time to write in the book, or because the book is being erased, Sly forgets them and has to be taught again.

Have one half of the narrative behind about Sly in the present and the other about his father in the past. Both connected by a common enemy. Sly gets a mysterious letter sent to him that simply reads 'The son pays for the sins of the father' which implies a threat and thus has to return to the thieving lifestyle to investigate further when Carmelita's superiors in Interpol strangely shoots down the idea to old an official investigation. Especially after learning the source of the letter coming from a man who was recently released from prison after spending about twenty years in the joint. Soon, he learns this individual had known his father back then and goes to Jim to find some answers. Thus, we cut back to Conner Cooper somewhere before Sly's birth and learn about the man Sly had admired growing up as he goes up against this criminal. A story that tells him as much about his new foe as it does about his own father. That the Cooper Legacy isn't as clean cut as it appears and he learns that although Conner is a noble gentleman thief, he ain't exactly a saint in how he went about his business. Particularly before he became a father. He did morally questionable things like threatening a man's life who happened to know something about his foe that made Sly question what he really knew about his own legacy while having to fight to save everything he holds dear to him. Conner on the other hand is learning how not to be as conceited after a near death experience and learning he's going to be a father soon while his relationship with Dr. M start to sour after an incident that saw an innocent civllian be killed because they had the misfortune of catching them in the act. Sly understands where Carmelita was coming from with her views on criminals and how the public perceives the Cooper Gang. We see them as just because we have the benefit of knowing them but to everyone else in-universe, they're just a clan of crooks who lasted this long until Conner got killed. It could also showcase the difference between a Cooper (Conner) who grew up with the security of the book and thus adopt that privileged mentality vs a Cooper (Sly) who had to fend for himself without it and having to earn his book. Then keeping up the pattern of the past games, I have Carmelita go through a character arc in this. Perhaps one where she's challenged about her seeming black and white views. Either she finds out that her own father wasn't entirely the straightlaced honest man she had admired him to be to parallel Sly's own discovery about the real Conner Cooper and having to come to terms with the fact or Interpol is having its' own Clear & Present Danger (Movie) thing going on that makes her question about her own understanding of truth, justice and liberty relation to their definitions. Is it really those three things because they're doing it to an organisation of criminal scum or is it because they're the law and thus it's okay for them to stoop to such morally reprehensible actions just to crack down on organised crimes while strongarmed into working with a criminal who could expose their dirty laundry to the press? Even the fact that they're willing to use Sly Cooper, someone who was willing to surrender his old life to be with her as a means to an end and as a tool to get them close to their main targets as well as their willingness to scapegoat her into taking the blame to save their own skins. 3 was about the Cooper Legacy and what one will do for the great fortunes. So, what if 4 is about the sins of the father and the power of perception? It not only builds on the lore but also could do something new by Sly basically be a rouge Interpol agent with Carmelita getting involved as an accomplice rather than as an obstacle. Plus you'd get to see the world of Sly as it was during Conner's day.
Gotta say... the original Sly Cooper game had a bunch of "Early Installment Weirdness" as it has many stuff the sequels do not have. And Sly Cooper 2 decided to tone the difficult down... by a lot. Plus, there was "Sly Cooper 5" planning, but it was cancelled after the "Sly Cooper" movie's trailer shot its chance.
I really liked this video. It was well edited and informative. Your skills are definitely on display and i'm loving it! My only gripe is that you pronounced some characters names waaaay off. Which is odd cause the games literally say the characters names with proper pronunciation when playing them. I know that sounds stupid but it does throw off the vibe abit.
I remember having the worst time of my life against Miss Ruby when i was a kid. Not sure if the timing on the ps2 verison was just way off, or if I was just lacking rhytm as a kid 😂
Of course the first game is considered the hardest when you consider all it takes is one hit to kill you. I hope it gets a Sly 2 style remake in the future.
Sly 2 Episode 8 was an anomaly. All-seeing guards and random guard deaths. Many of those deaths can be attributed to Clock-La. However, some most definitely can be attributed to guards either killing themselves or each other. If you wanna see funny clips, look up the speedrunner, Gnist's sly 2 clips.
Glad you covered this gem of a series. Some the stealth segments are buggy in the OG releases and HD remasters. Alot of the challenges you complaining about. Like bruddah come on man you're just milking it blud, like come on you really didn't die 125 times on sly 1, most likely 40 cus yeah that game for newcomer isn't very welcoming with it's diffculty but you gotta be better than that man :P. I don’t think the sly cooper games are like Dark Souls or Elden Ring hard. It’s just that there are some missions that are stress or rage inducing such as that TNT engine room mission in Sly 2, the RC Car part during the episode 4 heist in Sly 3 or the Dimitri missions in Sly 3, mainly due to how bad the mission structure is set up.
They are all pretty easy imo, but the hardest for me as a kid was definitely Sly 1. I still think it is the hardest now, but that doesn't mean it's hard
I know many people don't like Sly 4 but I actually do like it which I know upsets people but still I like the story the characters were may not have been perfect but they're still funny and have great emotions
I can’t believe Mz Ruby got disrespected like this! Haha. No, the mechanics of her level are pretty simple. But what makes it infuriating is this game came out on PS2, and almost all of us had sticky outdated original consoles to run this on. If you have any crud or latency in your buttons it will fail you no matter how accurately you press. I just recently replayed Sly 1 this week on the steam deck with a ps2 emulator and I experienced baaaad button hiccups even with the newer nicer setup. Delightful analysis and video! So happy to see the Cooper Gang is still alive and well in our hearts.
Sly 2 and 3 are just as easy and sly 4 is as well except looking for clue bottles and treasures but the bottles are easy just turn down the in game music and use the sfx of the bottle clink sounds u easily will find or if u have a psp u can locate them that way as well

Yeah, and some achievements suggest the players to get out and touch the grass if they played for over 100 hours on that game.

I really liked this video. It was well edited and informative. Your skills are definitely on display and i'm loving it! My only gripe is that you pronounced some characters names waaaay off. Which is odd cause the games literally say the characters names with proper pronunciation when playing them. I know that sounds stupid but it does throw off the vibe abit.

I remember having the worst time of my life against Miss Ruby when i was a kid. Not sure if the timing on the ps2 verison was just way off, or if I was just lacking rhytm as a kid 😂
Of course the first game is considered the hardest when you consider all it takes is one hit to kill you.

Sly 2 Episode 8 was an anomaly. All-seeing guards and random guard deaths. Many of those deaths can be attributed to Clock-La. However, some most definitely can be attributed to guards either killing themselves or each other. If you wanna see funny clips, look up the speedrunner, Gnist's sly 2 clips.
33:29 did you never stop to think to use the alarm clock to move the guard and then the music box to put all of them to sleep?
Hundred percenting Sly 4 without a guide is infinitely more difficult than hundred percenting Sly 1.

Some the stealth segments are buggy in the OG releases and HD remasters.
Alot of the challenges you complaining about. Like bruddah come on man you're just milking it blud, like come on you really didn't die 125 times on sly 1, most likely 40 cus yeah that game for newcomer isn't very welcoming with it's diffculty but you gotta be better than that man :P. I couldn’t beat the armadillo boss in sly 4 when I was ten and rage quit, replayed it when I was older and that shit was so easy😭
I don’t think the sly cooper games are like Dark Souls or Elden Ring hard. It’s just that there are some missions that are stress or rage inducing such as that TNT engine room mission in Sly 2, the RC Car part during the episode 4 heist in Sly 3 or the Dimitri missions in Sly 3, mainly due to how bad the mission structure is set up.
I would love new sly cooper games. My favorite franchise ever and my first platinum trophies

They are all pretty easy imo, but the hardest for me as a kid was definitely Sly 1. I still think it is the hardest now, but that doesn't mean it's hard
I know many people don't like Sly 4 but I actually do like it which I know upsets people but still I like the story the characters were may not have been perfect but they're still funny and have great emotions

I can’t believe Mz Ruby got disrespected like this! Haha. No, the mechanics of her level are pretty simple. But what makes it infuriating is this game came out on PS2, and almost all of us had sticky outdated original consoles to run this on. If you have any crud or latency in your buttons it will fail you no matter how accurately you press. I just recently replayed Sly 1 this week on the steam deck with a ps2 emulator and I experienced baaaad button hiccups even with the newer nicer setup.

You can just spam the button until Sly dodges you don't actually need to properly time it
The tank controls are not even that hard, especially when it's hard to even fail the mission
Sly 2 and 3 are just as easy and sly 4 is as well except looking for clue bottles and treasures but the bottles are easy just turn down the in game music and use the sfx of the bottle clink sounds u easily will find or if u have a psp u can locate them that way as well
