  • The new third generation BMW X1 is the smallest SUV in the BMW family and comes with a huge range of engine and powertrain options. In this video I drive the xDrive23i, a mild hybrid petrol with xDrive. An impressive package in both urban and rural driving, but it's not without fault.

The "intermittent slight delay" is due to two things, the transmission is actually a manual transmission with dual clutch and also contains mild hybrid. In some cases, you don't have the mild hybrid charged and the dual clutch needs to sync as you set off. Spend the time and learn the voice commands, it really is a better way as you can have both hands on the wheel. If you have music cranked, you don't need to take a hand off the wheel to turn it down to name voice control even better.

08:00: The car is built for the left hand drive German (and many other) market. BMW decided not to switch the armrest around. Also, the gear lever is farther away from you as a result, and the volume control is closest to you as opposed to being on the farther side, as BMW designed it to be.

Purchased the petrol MSport with all the kit, arrived late October 2022 in Australia. Only full electric or petrol at launch available. Great car, amazing tech … esp. the “key”, which is an electronic card in my Apple wallet on my phone. Downsides include the climate control being screen based, bmw voice command for navigation often can’t sort the address, and the road noise (run flat tyres and 20” wheels?). I tend to use Siri for calls and navigation. Otherwise, it suits our needs. Excellent and accurate review. New sub here.

Ooh 20” and run flats that must be a firm ride I’m looking at the msport but the firmness is a concern would only be on 19” though do you have m adaptive suspension is comfort actually comfortable ? Thanks

Couldn't agree more about physical versus touch screen problem. We can't look at or touch a phone but can take our eyes off the road to navigate a touchscreen menu (apparently)
As for the armrest (I think the design committee thought do we adapt for the UK market ? No was the response 😂)

Plug in hybrids are the cars that are in between! When they run on engine alone, as intended at times, they are lugging around very weighty flat batteries which in turn makes the car terribly inefficient until you are able to charge it again. Given you will likely not travel much more than 50 miles on battery alone, that will be a lot for many people.

Great review Pete. You can review the plug-in hybrid version of the X1 engine now quite easily. The new 2 series active tourer is based on the same platform as the X1 and has all the same engines (except the full electric). I personally have the 2 series 230e xdrive MSport active tourer. What I found interesting was your comment about the intermittent hesitation from a standstill. When I tested the 2 series I had the same mild hybrid to use as you and found exactly the same issue. Luckily I didn’t cancel my order as the plug-in version doesn’t have the hesitation issue at all. Please test the plug-in version of the X1 (or even the 2 series) as I would love to see what you think. 😎👍

I still find car prices today incredible.£47k for an X1 and we think it's good value. In 2016 i bought a well spec'd Audi A6 for £36k brand new. Its feels like the high prices people are paying for electric vehicles has allowed ICE vehicles to get a price hike too. The world's gone mad. Nice review Pete, does look good though

Caveat. I am old. However, having done a lot of miles around Europe for a number of years due to my job the modern tech fest, wide screen car interior is just a distraction with a hint of annoyance. Every time I get into my 718 Boxster I realise how good a simple, analogue but high quality and intuitive interior adds to the driving experience.

I have one of these on order after owning series five, three series tourings and currently an X2. The choices refiect my changing circumstances. The concerns raised by others refiect those made at the time idrive was first introduced. I’ve no doubt it will take a little while to adapt to the latest technology but it feels like a step up in terms of functionality in particular the driver aids. Hybrid or fully electric are not options for me. I’m switching to the petrol mild hybrid which feels like at least like a compromise from an environmental perspective. One detail, the fuel tank is a reduced 35l. found this review very helpful, reservations too. Congratulations.

Proving popular these Pete. Sent a few out at work.
They are similar in size to the original X3 now (not quite as tall though) which might explain it in part, as not everyone wants to upsize & may move from a 3 to a 1.
Styling looks modern & sharp & there is a power option to suit everyone (unless u want an M).
I must admit, i am not fully past the "buttons & switches please" train of thought either... you can navigate your way through multi screens of apps to change something but you can't touch your phone! 🤔

Excellent point about touch adding to distraction. I am also a bit confused about the removal of the iDrive wheel controller. BMW was going for a sleek look, but the iDrive controller was way better than using a touch screen, and it could have taken up the space reserved for a redundant volume scroll wheel.

You’re absolutely right about the heating controls. It’s hazardous. I have the new Peugeot 208 and it’s the same, quite distracting when driving. I don’t know why they can’t see this for themselves. They must have focus groups before releasing a car. It’s a case of just because they can doesn’t mean they should.

@@geraldfrear8121 That is a point. Never got into dictating stuff to my phone as “call so-n-so” usually end up in me ringing the wrong person! My car hasn’t got that feature so hadn’t considered that as an option. I’m happy to pay more and have the lovely tactile experience of communicating with the vehicle to be honest. Of the only 4 things I dislike in my car top of the list is touch screen radio channel selection.

Good review...Retractable/detachable roller load blinds hare so much more practical than rigid ones....especially for those wishing to carry dogs or wanting to load taller items without having to also load accommodate a rigid shelf plus whatever else is loaded.
Personally I can't get my head around circa £46k for this car which shares platform with vehicles that are more affordable (I am not anti mini countryman/clubman btw).
With a ban allegedly due on other than pure EV I suspect many won't justify buying this mild hybrid version....even if UK charging infrastructure is pathetic.

Thanks for a superb review!! I already have one here in Florida, USA. The mini console opens backwards for you, but the right way for me. Guess they didn’t want to change it for you guys.🥴 I had a 2012, X3, 40,000 miles,,right, I don’t drive much, it was a beauty!! A small open back truck side swiped me turning a corner, and it was totaled. I had been thinking of buying a new one before that happened!! I’ve always loved BMW, and read great things about the new 2023 X1. I was lucky, the dealership that I had always used for repairs, had one in the color that I wanted, with all the bells and whistles..Someone had special ordered it, but then couldn’t go through with it financially. And, from what I was told, special orders can take a few months to the States. I love it, but noticed at times when stopped, and I lift me foot from the gas it doesn’t move, and other times it does. I think it must happen in different modes.

grest review Pete. Realistically speaking, is there much a ride difference between the xline and msport suspension. When you were going down the country lane, it seemed you were jolted around quite a bit. It might just be a false perception from your camera, but how comfortable was the ride?
I cannot decide between the mline 20inch wheels or the 19inch xline, as realistically, there is only £1.5k difference in price, so is it worth getting the mline with the adaptive suspension or stick to the config you have reviewed here?

hey there, would the slight delay described be partly solved disabling the start stop feature when approaching a t junction or roundabout ? I currently drive the 420i auto transmission ZF and was experiencing delay when stationary at a light and wanting to pull away. But i found out that pulling the gear lever to the left side enabling the sporty gear shifting would cancel the start stop feature and make my ride movesfaster off the line without delay. So i was wondering if with this X1 shit by wire toggle :when in drive and pull back the toggle one more time if the gear selector finds itself in sport mode just like i do now with my 420i pulling the lever to the left side ? i personally haven't driven the new X1 yet and just ordered it and will receive it some time in July. i'm sure it will take some getting used to that transmission. Great review as always.

Hi Ped, great review as always. I used to be a great fan of BMW’s and have owned a few, including an X1 M Sport Manual in 2013. However, I find the latest styling not to my taste, and the driver interfaces too complicated. The other issue, as with all manufacturers, is price! So the base car is £38k, Pop on a few options and your north of £40k, and you incur the stealth tax which means you fork out another £5k in first registration and road fund licence charges. When I bought my first Jaguar E Pace in 2018, I managed to get the purchase price in at £39950! This tax has never been indexed by the Government, so most new cars are subject to additional taxation😡

    • @mda5003
      @mda5003 ปีที่แล้ว +1

At least if you buy a car that is already priced over £40k you know you have to pay the extra 'stealth' tax and so have a choice whether to buy or not. What is more annoying is selecting a car with a list price just below £40k (including options) only to find that when the car is delivered the manufacturers have increased the price which puts the revised list price just over £40k meaning you are then subject to the extra tax even though you are still paying the original list price to the Dealer. This is a Govt. scam!

There is absolutely no need to touch the screen, the new BMW’s have a very robust and highly intuitive voice control system, unfortunately the reviewer completely negated to inform the viewer of this game changer.

@@davzer3773 I still much prefer having knobs.I have the 1 series without touchscreen and an Arteon with all the bells and whistles.Much prefer the simplicity of the BMW.Have only just realised that the BMW actually has voice control😀VW have received so much negative publicity on their new infotainment systems that the CEO has promised to update existing systems and introduce more user friendly systems as soon as practical.I do feel that manufacturers have felt the need to introduce new technology to encourage customers to update their vehicle and have not actually road tested with the driving public. It is only now that car reviewers are showing these new technologies as a backward step are the manufacturers taking notice.

When it's time to change our current X4 (another 3 years/40k miles) we will probably downsize to one of these or a Lexus NX as the kids will have left home by then. Can't say I'm a fan of the big digital dash - just seems like another thing to go wrong long term.

I just don’t get these ‘small’ SUV’s. Give me an estate (touring) any day of the week. Better looking, more practical and easier on your back when loading your bike into the boot 😂
I do laugh at people who struggle to put their bikes on roof racks; SUV’s need to come specced with ladders 🪜😂
And don’t get me started on the touch screen thing……they are dangerous IMO. Voice control is patchy at best and often results in frustration……

Another good objective review.Looks can be very personal, have to say not a big fan of this one. Big NO to that info screen, sufficient to deter me from buying.😬 Hate to think what cost if something goes wrong with that screen and system. Have to say BMW and other manufacturers are adding too much cost and complexity, and even introducing features not welcomed by a large number of prospective buyers, and not convinced they add any form of safety, in fact the reverse.

Lacks a bit of originality to me. Had a car with voice control when the kids where little. They yelled at the car all the time to change temp etc. Was hilarious. Love my physical buttons too (age 50 you know) All they do to make safe cars that don't distract the driver and then I have to scroll down the menu of our XC60 to change climate settings etc.

Well…the BMW dealer kept chasing me about ordering an iX1 but I’m not exactly thrilled by the looks…a boring box with yet another “surprised mouse” front. The inside is alright but very bleak and that screen would just irritate…the analogue/digital mix dashboard on my SL is light years better with istant buttons and also voice command if needed. Then the price…buy the EV and add a few options and it came to £61500!….which is too much for a school run runabout. I never thought I’d be looking to pay £40+k for a car and I certainly wouldn’t be if it wasn’t to some generous inheritance, I feel we’re still 10 years away from affordable high end EVs which is a shame as I would’ve loved to have made this a hybrid, as it is I’m gonna have to drop the sunroof, although never had one and unsure of any possible complications they may bring, just have to chose now between xline and msport although the suspension concerns me and don’t know how good the comfort mode is yet. Does frustrate as well that I’ll have to face the higher tax but even ev’s will be taxed from 2025 include the hike for any over £40,000 , isn’t that most of them 🤔

Hi Pete, the hesitation on pulloff - you will most probably find that this happens when the front wheels are not pointing straight as the computer needs to work out the traction per wheel due to you having them at a turn angle. Still think the Mini Countryman on the same chassis is a better option

When did £46500 become reasonable for small to medium cross over? £600 for white paint! BMW also have monthly subscription for some things like heated seats etc. I’m not convinced the microchip shortage is not being milked by manufacturers to hike up prices. Not just BMW. They are all at it! With EVs coming more and more popular the different between manufacturers is narrowing compared with ICE vehicles. Example MG turning out good cars at very reasonable prices. How long will be before they are equal on fit and finish but thousands cheaper? Established manufacturers need to not exploit the current situation or buyers will shift loyalty.
