Outboards are gasoline, and they are much thirstier than the inboard diesels. I've calculated some operation ranges for the Targa 32 and the outboards generally use about 30-40% more fuel per nm than inboards at cruising speeds. Quite substantial. Outboards are easier to access and work on, and with outboards you also get the engine bay as a big storage area and can fit all sorts of goodies in there like a gyro, air con, generator etc, but of course lose much of the swim platform. The Volvo Penta inboards are a lot more durable than any outboards. So there are pros and cons for both choices. The biggest factor would probably be where you plan on cruising, do you have gasoline available from the marinas and docks? not all that sell fuel sell gas, but all will sell diesel.
