Is the Targa 32 the best Targa EVER? Full Sea Trial, Walk Around & Review

  • The Targa 32 is one of the most popular Targa models for good reason. It’s manageable to cruise singlehandedly or as a couple but is one of the most capable boats of its size out on the water. And this coupe version adds a twist…
In this in-depth sea trial, tour and review of the Targa 32, Jack Haines puts the Targa 32 through its paces in the Finnish archipelago to see if this is, in fact, all the Targa you will ever need.
Originally designed with a small upper helm, this coupe version adds a sunroof to the wheelhouse as well as a sliding window and door at the aft end. Not only does this improve access to the wheelhouse but it seriously boosts the amount of natural light that permeates the teak interior.
Forward, there is a double cabin that can be extended at the expense of some foredeck space and aft there is a double cabin with a separate single berth and bathroom/day head.
There’s a good selection of Volvo Penta single and twin engine installations on sterndrives from a single D6 440hp to twin 440s with a top speed of over 45 knots. The boat can also be fitted with twin 400hp outboards for a top speed closer to 50 knots.

It's always a good day when YachtBuyer releases a Targa review!
I must say you've come a long way Jack since you tested one of the first 32's on MBY twelve years ago!
Hopefully people see the changes/updates Botnia has done for the model, as it is easily seen as a "unfashionable" boat at a first glance.
A top notch video as always and I wish the YachtBuyer team a merry merry Christmas!

Thanks for a great review! We own a Targa 32 Aft door with a single VP440 D6 with double thrusters. It is in our opinion the best boat you can buy and own. The quality is just fantastic and we keep our boat in the water all around the year in Sweden. The size of the Targa 32 is perfect as it is not too large to handel single handed. The Carpelan family really knows how to build the best boats!

The Nimbus built Paragon 31 is another Scandinavian alternative in a similar style. Nimbus quality, while perhaps more mass-produced/industrial and less hand-work'y, is also very good. The 31 is a bit tighter and smaller than the three you mentioned (more direct competitor to the Targa 30), but the general layout is similar. Nimbus has dealers "everywhere." Could be helpful if you want to move the boat between cruising grounds all over.
For UK, and Northern European use, I'd take the Targa out of all of them. For warmer weather/Med, I believe all the others have wider doors and are generally more airy (Now, that new Targa 41 does look to be a real Med boat....). The immaculate teakwork that make Targas so warm and cozy in cold climes, aren't ideal when you have sticky, suntan lotion covered people (who have been trying out the shot glasses....) trying to squeeze past each other through rather tight passageways. For more open ocean (Say, Canaries), I'd tentatively feel safer surfing down, and perhaps even going against, bigger Atlantic swells in the lower, less pointy, deep-v-carried-all-the-way-to-the-transom hull of the Paragon. Ditto inbound bar crossings, for US West Coasters.. But upwind against a steep chop, I can't imagine any non-racer planing boat being more fit for purpose than a Targa. Overall, I'd default to the Targa. They just don't mess up, and have been doing this, and only this, for decades. The others would have to prove themselves on a usecase-by-usecase, boat-by-boat basis.
