Firefly's a good one for getting new subs like me ;-) I remember TRYING to watch it when it first aired. Not only did they air the episodes out of order, they kept changing the time, pre-empting it with baseball or in one case a movie. They even changed the day. And their promotional ads gave a very wrong impression of what the show was about. I never knew when it was going to be on, but I knew it was worth the effort. And it only lasted a half season. A fantastic TV show, ahead of its time, killed by men in suits. Thanks for uploading!
When this hit big on DVD, I gave the set to my 80 year old Uncle to watch. He finished it in under a week and was PISSED when I explained there were no more episodes.
I did the same with my grandma. Our weekly tradition was me and her would split a beer and watch an episode on Sundays. We must have watched it 29 times.
Glad you liked it, Thoren. And I like your style of just taking it all in. Every bit of dialogue in this show serves a purpose. None is wasted. So if you’re talking over it you’re going to miss something, often something that will make you laugh. Looking forward to more and thanks, Neil for introducing another generation to this gem. 💎
The companions in the firefly universe are treated very much the same as courtesans were in ancient days! They are obviously trained in sex but can also be trained as diplomats, couriers, bodyguards, spies, or assassins depending on the time and region they are from! That is why the companions are treated with a certain amount of respect and legitimacy!
The reason for Firefly's cancellation was more complex and malicious. The executive that green lighted Firefly was promoted. The new executive wanted to save money and ax a show. He didn't like Sci-Fi shows so it made it easy to pick Firefly. There was also a bit of a civil war going on within FOX. The new exec couldn't just cancel the show so he screwed with the promotional advertising of the series having them misrepresent what the show was about and the type of show it was to be. They then claimed that the 2-hr (remember commercial TV) pilot was too long and didn't have enough action just before the series was to air. So Joss wrote the second episode and made adjustments to introduce everyone to catch people up. The next sabotage was to air episodes out of order, then to change air times and days of the series without notice to the audience. They finally cancelled the show with 4 episodes not being aired. After the cancellation they aired the original 2-hr pilot. Over the summer without notice they aired the 3 remaining unaired episodes. The series was to have been 22 episodes a season for 5 to 7 seasons. Later without FOX's involvement fans raised money for a movie. FOX refused to let them use the name Firefly thus they used Serenity for the move. Universal picked up the movie to distribute and advertise. Universal dropped the ball in advertisement and Serenity was the only movie to be made. The hope was for it to go big and be the start of a movie franchise. So the movie does not wrap up the series but it does a good job of a quick back track of somethings to get the new audience the ability to see and understand some of the things about the characters and then the movie moves forward with the story-line.
Yes, I did enjoy this post. I loved it and would like to see more of your reactions to Firefly and anything else. Congratulations to you both for creating a fun new channel.
I was JUST thinking about your channel yesterday and was beyond thrilled to see you do a reaction to this (one of my favorite Joss Whedon shows)! LOVE your reaction!
This show is so beloved that astronaut Steve Swanson took the boxed set and Serenity with him to the International Space Station on his first trip there. Knowing an astronaut can only take a very limited amount of weight's worth of possessions with them, it shows how big of a fan he is. He left them in the ISS library for future astronauts to watch and most of them come back Browncoats.
Just subbed, I'm in it for the long haul! I'm a commercial photographer from way back, out of the industry now but used to shoot ads and fashion in New York. I love your portfolio, really beautiful work! Looking forward to more Firefly, Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones.
I'll enjoy rewatching this with you. My favorite show of all time. Saw it in the original run, and was in the theater on opening day for the ending movie.
Enjoyed the reactions. It was cancelled midseason. The fans did rise up. There is a documentary (Done the Impossible) that shows how and why the movie got made. It is on TH-cam. I would suggest waiting until the season is completed. Looking forward for more episodes
Interesting enough, Joss Whedon intended for Lawrence (Agent Dobson) to survive, so he could hunt down Mal & Co again in Season 2. The Season was going to start by making reference to Mal standing over him, with Dobson waking up while Serenity left.
So, there were many reasons why it didn't last more than one season. There were new executives at Fox and they wanted to sabotage all the old regime's programs. They didn't like the pilot (probably just because they wanted to sabotage the show) so they made them make another pilot which is episode 2. They also moved the night the show aired so, of course it made it harder for fans to continue to follow the show. The executives also had the mind set (as did most executives at the time) that episodes did not have to air in any specific order because most shows then didn't have an over arching continuing plotlines. They were episodic in nature. Also, generally, executives in movie studios, tv studios, computer game companies, etc think viewers/players are morons who can't figure stuff out or follow along unless they are led by the hand.
Great reaction !!! I am ALWAYS down for a good Firefly series reaction. Keep doing what you're doing ... specifically, not talking over things (you're perfect on this) and you'll have another follower here. You also did another great thing, you paused when you need to address something before continuing on. I personally love that approach. Merry Christmas 🎊🎉✨🎅🎄❄🤶🥂🙏👍!!!
Jewel Staite, (Kaylee), actually hates strawberries. And yet, in my 52 years of kickin' around this planet, I have NEVER made a woman get that expression on her face!!
The ollll side swich-a-roo! Nice pick! I bought a set of Serenity fan recordings of the Firefly conventions. Something like 19 hours worth of fun from 3+ Firefly convention years. One of the coolest dvd sets I've ever purchased. I guess not commercial legit because camera footage put onto dvd but still... you can tell the fans still were so loving and loyal of the show even many years after it's cancellation (and the movie). A worthy 5*, nice one! Thanks guys!
Gina Torres who plays Zoe also appeared in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Alias with Jennifer Garner, 24 with Kiefer Sutherland as well as Cleopatra 2525. 😅 The logic would dictate the reason has to do with the number of Chinese speaking people out in space in the future. The reality is for the writers it allowed them to swear profanity without the US censors or studio execs catching on. 😂 Morena Baccarin who plays Inarra was in Gotham, Homeland, Stargate-SG1 and V the rebooted alien show. She also starred in both Deadpool movies as Vanessa. 😂
What do we have here? Two interested viewers are boarding the "Firefly" class space freighter, "Serenity." I watched the "Firefly" episodes that Fox TV deigned to broadcast, but I didn't really see it until I bought the DVD set. One more thing: Every time a TH-cam viewer falls in love with "Firefly," a Fox TV executive falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building.;) Please stand for the complete Browncoat Anthem by Escape Key: th-cam.com/video/gUn-eN8mkDw/w-d-xo.html
Originally The Train job was supposed to be the pilot episode, but they then desiced to make this one. The Train Job works just as well as first episode for introducing who everybody is.
It's actually the other way around: The exec didn't like the pilot for different reasons and Joss Whedon and his team had to scramble up a whole new episode to act as a pilot, and that was "The Train Job".
This I think is an excellent choice. 13 episodes + a movie isn't such an extreme undertaking either. I look forward to enjoying this with you guys. And Fox axed so many shows in the bud. It got to a point where I (and probably a lot of people) wouldn't even start watching a Fox show unless it had a couple of seasons under its belt. I can't help but wonder if their constant axing kept their viewing rates a lot lower than they could have been.. like with Netflix these days.
:grins: You are already a leg up with mentioning that 'proper' Top Gear is your favourite programme :D And, yep, by the end that theme song will have you with tears in your eyes :) EDIT: Also, if your boy gets no feelings for either Jewel Staite or Morena Baccarin ... ... ... :grins: Needless to say, I agree with your appraisal of the female cast :) Joking aside, I also get the feeling from your reactions that we draw the same response from watching this show and there were some very sharp intuitions too :thumbs up: Of all the things that got to not happen in the TV world, the cancelling of Firefly was the most egregious. This was literal lightning in a bottle that the suits just p1ssed away. The tiny upside is that we never had to experience something that was great withering away but, given that the show runner/writer managed to multiple series of Buffy and Angel and keep them good, I was not worried on that front.
Firefly is one of those series (along with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and several others) that established a hard and fast rule: If you have a "high-concept" (that is, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, etc) television series, _Do NOT let Fox have it._ They will whip it all over the airing schedule, then cancel it for low ratings _which are their own fault._
Good call not talking through the whole thing. This is a show that works better if you don’t. It is why I enjoyed ya’ll so much and subscribed. I think your Dad should explain the whole Chinese thing. It is actually a part of the story as well as being a way to get around the censors. Also, there is a Utube Doc that goes into why Fox sabotaged this show that you might find interesting. Most of the re-actors to this show when it is over are just as furious as the fans were when it was cancelled. The fans along with Joss Whedon fought hard to get it back. There is even talk today about a reboot but I don’t think they can capture that magic of the combination of these actors and the well written stories.
See enough movies and TV, you become a smug, jaded, "seen this, seen that" sort that proclaims their non-surprise at everything. "Firefly," however, is/was a show with fully formed characters and situations that were unlike "the usual Fox TV dreck, calibrated for their much-sought-after 12-25 age bracket."
Neil and Thoren I have a great movie the both of you will enjoy and react to Alligator (1980) it is one of the greatest creature feature movie ever created oh and Jaws (1975) another great creature feature the both of you will have so much fun reacting to as well:).
The real story of why Fox sabotaged Firefly is there was a change in management, and the new person or team wanted to destroy everything associated with the previous person or team, so they deliberately tried to make Firefly fail. The released out of order, they put it in a dead slot on a friday night, and anything they could to kill it. Fox has a history of outrageously stupid moves. Another monumentally asinine move was canceling the hit show Lucifer when they did, and fans were so outraged, they started a campaign and were so loud that Netflix picked up the show and finished 3 more seasons, really successfully. By the way you two would really enjoy Lucifer, as it is one of the best written and performed TV series ever. There is a special hell reserved for FOX execs who canceled Firefly and people who talk at the theater.

Jayne is such a great character and he eventually gets the best hat.
It is very fine.

yeah until i found reaction youtubers i woud watch Firefly at least once a year... now i dont need to i can just watch other people watch it

Well, Firefly is really good, great even. But where Whedon really shines, it's Buffy.
I did not see any investment in the show, so regretfully I will not watch future episodes. Hope you ejnoy the show more as it progresses
