    To explain the random Chinese: In the history of the series, the United States and China ended up being the two major superpowers before humanity took to the stars, and over the years, people ended up speaking both languages. Obviously, the show was made in English, so they mostly use that, but they add Chinese phrases to show that history (and get away with saying things they wouldn't be allowed to say otherwise).

    • @alicequinn505
      @alicequinn505 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also the elites speak more Chinese, and those lower down speak more English. We don't really know all the different dialects, but it's possible they're just speaking English with some Chinese slang, or they're switching languages all the time.

    I’ll guarantee you, you’ll be singing the Firefly theme before the end of this season. I am not big on Western music but we all fall in love with it. Joss wrote that song.

    • @evatesche
      @evatesche ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It actually took me quite some time to enjoy the theme. It is not my kind of music at all. I fell in love with the show right from the first episode but mostly fast-forwarded the credits/theme. It was only after I finished the whole show and went back to rewatches where I pushed myself to listening to the theme and ever since then it is stuck in my head and gives me warm, fuzzy feelings of home everytime I hear it.

      @@evatesche I agree, it took me several months to start enjoying the song. At first it struck me as something they got from a guy playing music and panhandling in the streets - not bad for a homeless guy, but not great.

    Disney+ version or not doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is to get the episodes in the order Joss Whedon intended!

    • @adorkability
      @adorkability ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah. Buffy was filmed in the 4:3 aspect ratio. The HD version attempts to make it wide screen but fails miserable. Firefly was shot in widescreen. The network was not for it (very few shows were shot in widescreen at the time), but Joss "tricked" them into allowing it by filming a scene in the pilot, where Mal confronts Simon on the walkway, and placing the two character on the outermost edges of the frame so that they could only be seen in widescreen.

    • @CaptainFrost32
      @CaptainFrost32 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@adorkability Whedon did many scenes that way, shooting in both aspects. He also wanted longer gaps between scenes but the network cuts to commercial any time it registers total darkness. Joss worked with several people to find the darkest tone possible before the automatic commercial break.

  • @notoriouslybratty
    @notoriouslybratty ปีที่แล้ว +25

    This is a world building episode that got cut by the network and aired last. The network thought is was too slow and wasn’t engaging enough and forced Joss Whedon and Tim Minear to write a new pilot that is episode 2. At the end of the next episode, you should comment on which episode you preferred as a “pilot” episode.

    • @CaptainFrost32
      @CaptainFrost32 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep in mind, the requirement to write the new pilot came in on Friday afternoon for a table read Monday morning. He had to repurpose the next script with shorter exposition, attitude changes, regular episode length, and continue the worldbuilding.
      All of this while riding herd on Buffy AND Angel, 3 shows simultaneously.

    One thing to bear in mind is that the "one season" of Firefly wasn't even a full season. The idiot executives at Fox cancelled the show while the crew were still shooting, so we ended up with probably half of what we could have had. Immense pressure from the fan base pushed them into allowing Joss to make the film "Serenity" to wrap up some of the loose ends.
    Funnily enough, it was this mishandling of Firefly that allowed Dollhouse to get 2 full seasons and an actual conclusion despite being cancelled, because the executives didn't want a repeat of the fans coming after them demanding resolution.
    I love Firefly for the characters, but to be honest I personally prefer Dollhouse. It's nothing against Firefly, and I'm not saying Dollhouse is the best show ever, but the kind of story it tells is more appealing to me. It's such a shame that Dollhouse has been more or less forgotten in the mainstream; fingers crossed you'll check it out at some point in the future 🤞

    In the future Firefly reflects, the United States & China grew to form an "Anglo-Sino Alliance". The series takes place in 2517, mankind having headed to the stars after depleting Earth of all its resources. Most of the character will dip into Mandarin in times of crisis, the way some folks dip into profanity nowadays when angry or upset. There's a number of great Firefly terms that you'll come to learn of through-out the series.
    It speaks volumes how Inara's presence as a Companion lends an air of diplomatic leniency to Serenity, allowing the ship to land on planets that normally wouldn't welcome her crew. Plus the training and education that these women get when studying to become Companions is impressive (psychology, music, fencing, and languages, as well as unarmed martial arts). Have so much respect for Mal except when he resorts to calling Inara the "W" word, but that's discussed later in the series.
    Really hope you enjoy this single season-and-a-movie ride! Thanks for reviewing this show!!!!!

  • @evatesche
    @evatesche ปีที่แล้ว +16

    YES YES YES!
    I am sooo happy I annoyed you enough in your livestreams to start looking into Firefly. Hope you enjoy it enough to watch the whole Season.
    Serenity has so many of my favorite moments in it. Just a few examples:
    We see Mal wearing his cross in the beginning and kissing it for good luck. Then later while talking to Book he says God is not welcome on his boat. In Firefly they don’t spell things out for you. You don’t have to see Mal giving a whole long speech about why he lost faith and how God let him down - seeing his face while his troops got bombed into ashes in Serenity Valley is enough to know exactly why he has turned away from faith.
    While Mal and Simon are arguing about if he is going to let Kaylee die, Inara tries to reason with Mal but he shouts at her to never tell him what to do. One second later we only hear a single painful wailing from Kaylee and that is enough to immediately change his mind and run for it. We see in that moment how dear Kaylee is to the Captain.
    Jayne being the one who is always making fun of Kaylee, patronizing and embarrassing her, is also the one sitting anxiously at the window to the infirmary following every second of the operation. We see in that moment how dear Kaylee is to Jayne.
    While pointing guns at each other we hear Dobson talking to Simon saying: „I just got a job to do, nothing personal“ - Camera panning over to Shepherd Book whose bloody head is a reminder of Dobson beating him repeatedly and unnecessarily in cold blood before. No further words are needed here to justify it to the audience when Mal is shooting the lawman only seconds later.
    Also a really nice touch: all around Serenity we see drawings of flowers. It makes the ship feel more comfortable, more home. And we already know the characters so well in such a short amount of time that without any explanation we know exactly that it was Kaylee who drew all those flowers.
    THAT is perfect storytelling for me.

  • @MsKimifer

    That fake out with Kaylee dying is very, very reminiscent of the fake out with Cordelia at the end of Lovers Walk. When she passes out and then it cuts to a funeral scene. Joss got you (and us) twice with the same cruel joke, the bastard.

    For all fans of The Buffyverse Firefly and Dollhouse are just packed with a constant stable of Whedon actors. Here of course we have Nathan Fillion, Caleb in BTVS, and Gina Torres Jasmine in Angel as two of the main characters. As well as that we have Adam Baldwin the evil Marcus Hamilton from Angel playing Cobb. We also have of course from BTVS S3 E1 Anne, Carlos Jaycot who played Ken in that show as well as playing Richard in Angel episode Bachelor Party. Of course in the Firefly pilot the eagle eyed would have spotted as well Dortmunder Captain at the start played by Andy Umberger, the evil doctor who detached his body parts in Angel, I Fall to Pieces, as well as playing recurring character D'Hoffryn in BTVS. Alan Tudyk from Firefly also pops up in many episodes of Dollhouse. All this being said it really is a great show in its own right, melding all these different scenarios together for a really interesting mix of styles. I always felt it was a more serious Red Dwarf, with the strange crew assembled on an old spacecraft endlessly travelling. Interesting to see how Elie reacts to the show as it very much a departure from The Buffyverse, but has that great Whedon style about it. Personally I much preferred Dollhouse as a show but this of course is just a matter of opinion.

When I finally did, I had to eat a lot of crow. This show is so awesome! I'm hoping I can convince you to watch another Whedon show after you finish this one. It's called "Dollhouse". It's only 2 seasons so it's not a huge commitment but as with all things Whedon, it's written and acted well. And the main character is played by Eliza Dushku (aka Faith). ☺️

    It's interesting seeing this show from a first time viewer's perspective. Its one of my favorite shows and its awesome that more people are experiencing it. While this episode probably technically isn't perfect, it is almost there; in the worldbuilding, the character building, the setup, and the mass of questions that it leads with, and building trust by giving a small but steady trickle of answers. It sucks that fox originally aired it last, its almost like they wanted the show to fail. If the show was a man, they basically took him to the top of mount Everest, then when he started to die from lack of oxygen they said "Look, he's dying. Never were going to live!"

    I think the Terminator series definitely had a huge impact on Joss Whedon, especially if you also factor in Connor and the time distortion of interdimensional travel in Angel Season 04, so good call picking up on those elements right off the bat. As for westerns in space, Gene Roddenberry said in his Star Trek pitch that he wanted a "Wagon Train to the stars." That was also a huge inspiration on George Lucas along with the serials of Flash Gordon, but if you go scene by scene many of the most iconic moments of Star Wars were taken from westerns he had loved and studied before and during college. I haven't checked but I'm sure there are TH-cam videos that probably do shot by shot comparisons to the original source of inspiration. There has been a HUGE link and comparison in film and media between exploring the old west and exploring the recesses of outer space. It's one of my favorite aspects of space operas and science fiction.

    Subscribed just to see another person become a brown coat. This series is well worth the investment in time and emotional attachment and frustration over what could have been had some executive nitwit not set out to sabotage it from the beginning.
    There is talk that they are planning a reboot but considering Disney's track record with Star Wars I'm skeptical they can repeat what made Firefly so special.

    After _Firefly_ was canceled (literally while they were in the middle of filming the final episode of the season) Joss Whedon made a movie so that loose threads could be tied off. It isn't perfect - several things went against the original plan for the series, either for casting reasons or because there just wasn't enough time - but it really is a very good movie. Its name is _Serenity_ (matching the name of the pilot episode, which kind of brings things full circle). Please finish the series by watching _Serenity;_ you'll miss a lot if you don't.

Space stations, multiple stars in one system. The original colonies became the Establishment with the highest technology and social barriers. The farther out the colonies are, the more rustic the gear as the tech must be reliable and/or cheap. English and Mandarin are used in the polyglot, but there are communities that keep other languages and traditions alive.

    1. Shepherd Book gave the strawberries to Kaylee; she has every right to eat them.
    2. Notice that most of the worlds they visit seem to be short on water. Fresh strawberries would be a rarity and a luxury. For that matter, fresh food of any kind would be rare on a small tramp freighter like Serenity. Did you see a hydroponics bay? No? That's because they don't have one. They have no way to grow their own food.
    3. In the Firefly universe, Companions are extremely respectable people. Yes, they're paid for sex (among other things), but to call a Companion a "whore" is a deliberate insult and not really accurate - "courtesan" would be a better term. Companions are members of a guild. They train for years to do their jobs properly, and can be kicked out of the guild if they violate the rules or prove to be incompetent. Companions have the right to choose whom they will accept as a client, and if a client attempts anything the companion hasn't agreed to she can not only refuse to serve him (or her) but put the client on a blacklist so that no companion will ever agree to serve that client again. As for why Mal is insulting Inara, it becomes fairly obvious later in the series that there's a good deal of attraction between them and neither one wants to admit it. They spend most of the season skating around the issue, even while it's obvious to the entire crew and the viewers.
    4. Mal is a very conflicted character. The opening scenes of this episode were a depiction of the Battle of Serenity Valley, the final battle of the war Mal and Zoe fought in, when the Alliance crushed the rebellion. Mal had faith that God would save them because their cause was just, and God didn't, so Mal lost his faith in God. (And note that he named his ship "Serenity," for the battle of Serenity Valley.) Now he's just doing what he has to in order to get by, most of it illegal. He's a smuggler and a scavenger. He has no compunctions about killing people. At least, that's what he tells himself, but his conscience keeps getting in his way. The smuggling doesn't bother him; it truly is necessary, and while it's illegal it isn't immoral. But he hates it when innocent people get caught in the middle, and he refuses jobs that are likely to endanger innocent bystanders. He also refuses to smuggle things that he knows will be used to hurt people, and he won't steal from those who can't afford to lose anything. And it bothers him a lot that he *isn't* the villain he likes to portray himself as. Think Han Solo and you won't be far off.

    I know you are new, but due to your accent, I can't tell if you are saying Mel or Mal with an accent. If the latter, I just have to get used to it.
    I actually appreciate you hitting pause as too many people talk over scenes missing important info.
    You have seen Carlos Jacot, aka The Fed, in Buffy in S3 Ep1 Anne as the youth counselor/head demon. He also appears on Angel. He later appeared on and then wrote for the non-Whedon, but still great show, Psych!
    The Chinese I don't think is ever explained, but it was because on "Earth-that-was," basically the US and China merged, so everybody knows Chinese. Bit it's really so they can curse and avoid the censors. Tough, usually the curses are bizarre things like may monkeys flynout your butt. But others are pretty straightforward curse words. Not the actors' favorite part of the show. LOL
    I don't know if there is a fruit shortage as much as they spend so much time in space that fruit would al go bad, so they usually eat stuff like the food bars they were selling. So, yes, rare, but probably more rare for them than for the galaxy. They also tend to avoid the nice areas where you would get fruit to avoid the feds.
    If you are concerned about episode order, look up a copy of the DVD. That has the proper order. Also, once done, I recommend watching the brief web series, "The River Tam Files," and, if you are a fan, the gag reel. Then Serenity.

    Chinese and English are both used, in-universe, by characters because the United States and China were the two major superpowers humans left what is known, in-universe, as Earth-that-was behind. The abandonment happened because of depleted resources, overpopulation, and a compromised ecosystem.
