A great companion series to Firefly is Con Man, featuring Alan Tudyk and Nathon Fillion. Joss Whedon, and several of the other cast members of Firefly appear in this series about a fictional sci-fi show that got cancelled way too early,

You wouldn't want all your questions answered in advance by some voice. This way makes you think, pay attention I think it adds a lot to the series. Every little discovery about each character is a treasure.
The thing i love about the Companion's (Inara) fundamental skill is reading a person and what they need to hear. Kindof like a "councilor/therapist", with physical kinesthetic portions of the treatments. When Book was in his crisis of faith, she gently said exactly what he needed to hear, and punctuated it with a blessing touch to speak in a language he could understand. And again, in the galley, she reminded him of his primary tool of "prayer".

Just an FYI. Whenever someone starts speaking in Chinese, they’re cussing! It’s meant to show how cultures blend over time. Really it was a way to get by the censors.
Well, they threw in some other Chinese words and phrases to mix it up a bit and not be quite as obvious, but that was the motive for using Chinese, yes.

Mal is big on quick solutions to problems. There'll be another problem along any minute, gotta solve this one, get ready for the next. Crow is a problem, shove him thru the engine. The NEXT guy got the message right away.

Greetings Ms. Bliss! In answer to your question I originally watched the series when it aired on TV and the episodes were out of order, which made it difficult to make sense of the story chronology... the DISC Order is the correct way to watch it as the Creator intended, so you are watching it in the correct order. You will definitely enjoy this series and it will make even better sense in this order! One of my favorite series and so influential on the Sci-Fi genre... Strap-in and enjoy the ride!
Oh, that's so weird. The same thing happened to me with Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex on Cartoon Network. I saw a bunch of episodes with no continuity, and that show is....convoluted, in a good way, so I was totally lost on that series for years. Then I tried on DVD. Now, it's one of my favorite shows ever.

Kaylee and the strawberry is an important clue. Top quality, fresh fruit is enough of a luxury to be put up individually in a presentation box. And the cargo, the treasure, turns out to be survival rations. Things at the poor end of the 'Verse, are that desperate.
Don't worry, the names will come. You're meeting a bunch of people very quickly.
"Kaylee and the strawberry" is also one of the hottest things I've ever witnessed. That eyelid flutter...😍
I wouldn’t say that those are survival rations. Those are daily rations. Colonists eat those until they are capable of harvesting crops to feed themselves.

Interesting note: the actress who plays Kaylee (Jewel Staite) actually doesn't like strawberries which makes her acting in that scene even more special as she mailed the look of someone really enjoying it.
Loved this show and the movie that came after Serenity 2005 a nice little present to the fans to serve as a finale to the series. River Tam/Summer Glau is my favorite. I love her facial expressions and the quirks of River and the odd things she says. Names The Captain is Mal, his right hand woman is Zoe, her husband the pilot is Wash, the Companion is Inara, the mechanic is Kaylee, the muscle is Jayne, the Shepherd is Shepherd Book, the Doctor is Simon and his sister is River. Hope you enjoy the Show.

On a galactic scale, gold isn't worth very much. Food products are incredibly important, and fresh fruit is the height of luxury. That's why Badger was showing off his apple peeler, and why Book had strawberries in a box.
Fun fact. Jewel Straite, the actress who played Kaylee, actually hated strawberries.
gold isn't worth very much here, either. it's ridiculous that people allow ancient superstition to convince them otherwise. there's nothing inherently valuable about gold.

@@sirmoonslosthismind It has a fixed value because there's not an unlimited or unknown amount of it in the world, unlike oil or American currencies based on, wherever the wind blows. If your money is gold, it will never inflate. It's arbitrary to make that "thing" gold, but it's the most convenient.

The war sets the tone for the entire show. It was a struggle by the "brown coats" against the rule by the Federal Alliance. It was fought to allow the insurgents to continue self-rule of the individual planets. They lost so a lot of them operate a black market economy in defiance of the Alliance authority. An old situation now shown in space. A lot of the questions were not answered because the network canceled them. So, the fans were REALLY irritated.
It’s also a reference to a lot of old western movies, where many of the characters were American Civil War veterans.
Two by two, hands of blue
I did not watch the series when it aired on Fox, but my brother finally convinced me to give it a try so I bought the DVD box set. I was very happy after watching. I loved your reaction Biss. 😊😊❤❤
I know it might seem like splitting hairs to some people, but illegal salvage is a far cry from piracy. Pirates are the scum of the Earth/galaxy. It's like the difference between a pickpocket and a violent carjacker/kidnapper/slaver. Usually with a good deal of the r-word thrown in for good measure. That being said, love that you're reacting to this show.
You are watching it in the correct order. The first one was the original pilot made for the show, which is why it was 2 hours. However, the studio executives pretty much felt the same way about the captain as you did, and asked them to make a different pilot episode with the captain being less broody, which was the 2nd episode you watched. When it originally aired, the first one shown on TV was the second episode, and they showed the original pilot last (and didn't show the last 2-3 episodes that were made) after they had announced the cancellation.
I would say that watching it in Fox's f*** upped order isn't catastrophic. All us old folks who watched it on TV when it was released still fell in love with the show despite Fox's best efforts to destroy it.

Great reaction Biss! I can image how this must be extra difficult, not just in a second language and no subs, but also Whedon's quickfire dialog and the unusual 'old west' speech patterns! You commented on the Sheriff and Mal's exchange after returning the meds and I just wanted to highlight it because it's a very subtle but very illuminating exchange:
When the sheriff says "when a man learns [about our situation] then he has a choice", he's giving Mal credit for bringing back the meds and is implying he would have understood if he hadn't (just a guy doing a job, like you said).
Mal's reply, "I don't believe he does", says a lot about the honourable character under the rough exterior. For him, there was only one right thing to do.
I am so thrilled that you have decided to take on this series. It is a master class on visual storytelling. By the end, you will know and love all these characters, and when you reach the end (including the movie) you can't help but feel sad because your time with them is over.
Still my favorite TV show all these years later, and I love that new people are still discovering it. You will never be the same after this. Browncoats for life.

Summer Glau was also good in the series she was in after this one, Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Thank you. This is a great series. I look forward to your reactions. There is another sci-fi series:Farscape. It's about a US astronaut sucked into a wormhole and come upon a living ship (Moya) and meet escaped convicts. It was produced by Jim Henson so there are lots of puppetry involved. It was both a funny and serious shows. It was produced mainly in Australia so you might see some familiar scenery.
There's been a youtube channel streaming the series recently, shouldn't be difficult to find.

I think you are really going to like this series, and we'll join the legions of fans who were in despair when the series was canceled after only one season. I always wonder what a season 2 or 3 would have looked like and what they would have experienced or the adventures they would haveled.
My favorite sci-fi tv show. :) So many good characters and jokes. Like the one in the bar: "You know, I'm thinking you one of them Independents. Mal: And I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling." :D
I can totally see Biss as a member of Serenity's crew. Her sharp tongue and dry, sarcastic wit would fit right in, although I suspect she'd be a constant thorn in Mal's side.
Was thinking the same thing, lol. Have a feeling she and Mal would butt heads often.

It takes most folks a few episodes to become invested in Firefly. You'll probably really enjoy episode 4,and then on episode 6 you should be hooked. Then a few episodes later you'll be angry that the series is so short! Luckily, there's a movie to wrap things up.

Great choice for your reaction Miss Bisscute Firefly is a Classic space Western drama created by writer and director Joss Whedon, in The 90's he was famous for create The series: Buffy The Vampire Slayer and the spin-off Angel (you should watch them, both are also Classics TV series).
And Summer Glau is in an episode of Angel.

You're watching in the correct order. Fox decided there wasn't enough action in the first episode, so showed part 2 first ! Then they bounced it round the schedule, and only showed the first 10 of 14 episodes before finally cancelling it. There was enough of an uproar from the fans to get the "Serenity" movie made (absolutely unheard of before) which ties up a lot of the loose ends. When you've finished the series I thoroughly recommend "The Expanse". The only series to come close to Firefly - cancelled by Syfy after 3 series, and bought by Amazon who completed another 3 series. Probably the most scientifically accurate science fiction series ever, and often described as Game of Thrones in space (and unlike GoT, they didn't screw up the ending)

River Tam, Simon's brilliant sister who was the star success of Alliance neuro experimentation. She's erratic because they made her crazy, but her rambling is important. "Two by two, hands of blue." Her nasty pursuers wear blue gloves...
Shepherd Book. Shepherd means minister.
Inara is a Companion, which is similar to a geisha. She's trained not just in the sexual arts, but in all forms of entertainment.

A great show, and the history of how FOX messed up a good thing. Every reviewer who's watched this gets hooked on it...This show was Lightning in a Bottle and up there with Star Trek TOS and Babylon 5.
I finally checked your bio after hearing you say tschüss with that accent... It makes sense now! I used to watch Firefly over and over as my comfort TV, but now I like to watch reactions. Glad you started it, it's one of my favorites!
I'm looking forward to this series. I love this show. It may take 5 or 6 episodes to really get into it but everyone ends up loving it and wishing there were more episodes
This is an outstanding series, despite being canceled (by network sabotage). Everything shown has a well written, nuanced reason behind it. Even the minor characters & scenes have depth.
*Some episode FYI (no spoilers):*
*Pilot - "Serenity"*
- During the war, Mal was very optimistic and devoted to God. He even kissed the cross he was wearing. The Battle of Serenity Valley changed Mal. War can do that. Mal became pessimistic and no longer welcomed God on his ship.
- When Mal told Simon "Kaylee is dead" it was more than just a cruel joke. Mal was also testing him. Mal made it a point to look at Simon's reaction. He even mentioned it to the crew "You should have seen his face!". Simon passed Mal's test. Simon's concerned response for Kaylee (and not for himself & sister) is why Mal offered him a position on his crew at the end.
- People are used to eating synthesized food so it's a big deal when a real strawberry and fresh produce shows up.
- Drinking water would be limited on a ship. Using very little to rinse your hands and face would be necessary. Chances are that isn't drinking water but more of a sanitizer/cleaner that Mal used sparingly on his hands and face during his bathroom break.
*Episode 2 - "The Train Job"*
Whedon and Minear had less than the weekend to write "The Train Job" as their “new” pilot episode. The dirty FOX execs waited until the last minute on a Friday to rejected the original pilot "Serenity" for airing (but later allowed it to be aired out of order as the last episode).
BACKGROUND: FOX network did this series dirty. Whedon had made the Firefly series contract with old FOX execs for a 5 season run (22 - 24 episodes per season). Politics happened and those execs were let go. The new FOX execs did not want Firefly. They wanted their own contracts so they worked hard to get Firefly canceled.

The punch was called for, The doctor just brought an entire multiplanetary government down on Malcolm and his crew by getting on their ship and forcing them to run by witholding life-saving medical treatment of a wounded crew member unless they went rogue, a crew member who was wounded because he was there, then proceeded to call the Captain a coward, a lapdog and a sellout with no scruples all while relying on the same man not to just jettison him into space for the trouble he brought down on them. 100 percent deserved.

To me this is the best series that was on TV, it had comedy, action, drama and fun characters. I love how you watched all the way through so you could decide if you liked it or not. Great reaction Lady Bliss.

I have to say you are the first person I ever heard say that they thought Inara was a robot after that first scene with her. I loved that unique reaction.
Yes, you're watching this in the right order! The network originally aired the episodes all out of order (and didn't even air all of them), which is why there's often confusion with knowing what order to watch them in, but you've got it right. This is a show where there's meant to be continuity from one episode to the next, which wasn't common when Firefly originally aired, so if you watch the episodes in the order they originally aired there are a lot of things that just won't make sense.
Jayne is the muscle. The companion is Inara. The captain is Malcom. The mechanic is Kaylee. The Doctor is Simon. His little sister is River. The pilot is Wash. His wife and Malcom’s number 1 is Zoe.
Mal telling Simon that Kaylee died was a test. He told Simon before that if Kaylee died, he would throw Simon out of the airlock. When he told him that Kaylee was dead, Simon cared more about his patient than his own life, which is why Mal allowed Simon to stay.
Given that those two are directly tied together, I don't see how Simon's behaviour indicates which one he cares more about.

Yes, you are absolutely watching it the correct way.
Serenity pilot episode first, rest of series, then the Serentity movie.
The issue with firefly (unlike Star Wars) was that Fox initially aired the episodes out of order. Starting with rejecting this pilot and demanding a new one (Train Job) be ready for table reading in just a weekend! This siared last in the series (making non sense), and three episodes weren't even aired in the initial run.
