Three quick notes: First, welcome aboard a journey that literally millions have taken getting to know and love Firefly. After the series was canceled it was released on DVD and fans began to share them with friends. Soon after and for over a year it was the #1 DVD set sold on Amazon. Second, Browncoats. The war you saw was a Civil War between the Central Planets (the Alliance) like the beautiful modern Persephone and the Outer Worlds (the Browncoats) like the backward and primitive Boros. Mal and Zoe were on the side of the Browncoats and they LOST. Fans of the show call themselves Browncoats and you will too. Third, Gina Torres (Zoe) does not get enough credit for her acting chops. She is a master of non-verbal acting. Watch her. Often she will be in the background and she is always setting the scene. She'll be moving to get a clear shot at whomever Mal is dealing with or her facial expressions and body language will tell you volumes about what is about to happen. In a very real sense this series was Zoe and Mal's tale, the tale of the War Buddies, the ones who survived the war. Watch for that too in future episodes. Finally, they are starving. They buy fuel for the ship before they buy food hence Mal's final line, "We're still flying...and that enough." Mostly they eat flavored Tofu. They call it simply "Protein", i.e. "Protein in all the colors of the rainbow." That's why the strawberry is such a luxury item and why when you see them sitting for a meal it is a joyful time. The mere act of eating is a celebration for them. I hope these notes help you appreciate a series beloved by millions. Welcome to the Browncoats!
@@robertphillips213 Yeah. I like to notice good actors like Gina. They are not always the leading man or lady but they make the leading actors performance that much better by theirs.

Fun fact: the bit with Wash and the dinosaur toys has become the source of thousands of memes. ThinkGeek, before they closed down, actually sold a box containing these dinosaurs, which you could open and play with, *OR* leave them in the box and press the button to hear Wash say things like "curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal". I have one of these on a bookshelf in my living room :)
That scene was also his audition. You can find it here on YT. Whedon stated that he envisioned Wash's character to be a Top Gun type pilot but he also wanted him to be a comedic relief. I believe Whedon modeled Wash's character after Val Kilmer's Iceman from Top Gun (1984). If you will recall, Iceman was a cut up and a joker BUT when he flew he was described as _ice cold, no mistakes. He just wears you down until you do something stupid and then he has you._ And you see Alan Tudyk try to do that in the pilot and in future episodes. He switches from playing with the dinosaurs to all business in a split second. And when the Reavers are behind them he calmly says, "I need Kaylee in the Engine Room please." Tudyk struggled with this though out the series and movie. He remarked at one point in the movie he was supposed to be doing his Iceman thing but he just kept break into a Jerry Lewis impersonation and cracking everyone up. There is actually a blooper for the movie showing him breaking up Nathon Fillion and Mal taking the helm.

Star Wars was originally pitches as a "Space Western". The basic concept behind this was Star Wars with the Western aspect turned up to 10, and what if the Rebellion lost. Without giving up spoilers, but to head off some questions, the basic backstory is... The USA and China form the Alliance, which creates a unified global government. That's why you'll hear Mandarin sprinkled in with the English, and see Chinese lettering, as well as some of the aesthetic. As resources on Earth are used up, we started colonizing other planets. The core Alliance run worlds are rich, high tech, state of the art marvels. The outer planets, used mostly for farming, mining, etc.... to support the core planets can be much more primitive. As they said, newly terraformed worlds are settled by pioneers with minimal supplies. Many settlers are dropped off with the basics to build a house, maybe defend themselves, and not much else, hence the 19th century feel to so much of the show. The Alliance, much like the Empire in Star Wars can be harsh and draconian, and heavily taxes and regulates everything. As a result, there's good opportunity for smugglers and the like, who don't mind taking the risk of bending the rules, which brings you to our crew. Enjoy the show. Welcome to the family. Y'all are Brown oats now.
Mandarin is used to get around swearing in English...If we had got a second & third season we would have got the background histories of the crew. It's well-known that Fox screwed this show over. FYI- Blooper at 35:05 Wash has no control stick in front of him.

This is one of those shows that doesn't really age out. Some of the humor feels a little retro at this point, but it's still funny. The special effects also age surprising well now too. They're definitely noticeably less realistic than what we see now, but the way they're used gives them a kind of charm. The jerky camara movement when showing ship exteriors and the pleasant use of colors and aesthetics makes up for a lot. As far as reavers go: screw a secret compartment. The second they get close enough I'm just popping some cyanide with a glass of good wine and saying au revoir to life. I'm pretty attached to living, but not attached enough to risk going through that shit. Inara had the right idea. Whoever came up with those things ranks pretty high in the "what's the worst way to die that you can think of" department.
The set of the internal scenes is one giant continuos set, so as the cast move say from the loading bay to the bridge they actually climb up through the set Other tv shows would have each of those places as a separate bit and you'd just pretend that they moved through the ship to get from one to the other
Looking gorram shiny ladies 😍 While I wish there was more diversity (they use a lot of Chinese to have no Asian characters 😅) Firefly is a fun season. Looking forward to seeing what you think of some of my faves.
"Firefly" got HALF of a season on Fox TV, just like a large number of interesting shows that made way for...what? It looked like Fox TV was courting the 12-25 age group, judging by what they kept and discarded. It is a puzzle how good animated shows like "Bob's Burgers" and "The Great North" share space with"Krapopolis" and "Family Guy."
@@Caseytify lending credence to this theory is the fact that simon and river have the family name "tam", which is chinese. maybe simon's father was adopted? don't know, but no one we meet from the outer planets seems to have an asian surname.
after you finish the series of Firefly they also created a movie to close the series called Serenity that you should put on you as well i love them both please let me know what you think
Thanks for watching with us! We recorded these reactions last year. Originally the show was for Patreon only. We already have a reaction to Serenity on the channel. I think you will enjoy it a lot! 😸
Shiny! Nice to see new people watching this gem, Firefly is one of the best SciFi shows of all time, cut short by very stupid execs at Fox. But probably because of that it became so popular and it's perfect from start to finish, there wasn't enough time to screw it up :) Fun fact, in order to not have any swearing in the show and keep it friendly, they used Cantonese/Mandarin words to swear with instead. 'Humped' and 'Son of a bitch' are probably the worst English words used in the show, everything else is in Cantonese/Mandarin, or rather the Cantonese/Mandarin of the future. Enjoy the ride!
I still haven't seen a sci-fi series anywhere near as good as this. Typical that Fox dropped it - they simply haven't a clue. They put it out in the wrong order at the worst possible time where hardly anyone saw it, and then because it wasn't an instant massive ratings success....
Jayne does have his flaws. But, I would have done what he did when Kaylee got shot. Looking forward to your reaction to the rest of the series and the movie.
Beatles references--cry baby cry, make your mother sigh--is wasted on youth...So is movie history....this is John Ford's Stagecoach (a updated version of a de Maupassant short story, meets Howard Hawks professionalism, meets Hitchcock suspense, meets Bergman emotional realism...Good miss on the geisha reference...Great miss on the dominant metaphor of rich core nations and poor peripheral ones a la today...judging books by his cover, kool... good job getting the future mashup of Chinese and English...the genre mashup...the character dynamics...
I have to believe that your inability to understand the scene with Inara and the needle stem from not Wanting to Know. cause I'd like to think it self-evident.
Just an fyi just in case you didn't know from your patrons. Firefly is set in the Alien universe. The large ship bombing them has the Wayland-Yutani logo.
@@Caseytify Well from what Ive read. Firefly is set in 2517, 138 years after the last Alien film Alien Resurrection. Considering what Earths condition was in that film, it would fittingly be the Earth that was.
The plot point of Inara's syringe is a very distasteful bit of storytelling that Whedon luckily never got to tell. Which is fine, this pilot is strong as hell without having to go there.
There is a movie - SERENITY - but I wouldn’t watch it until u get through this series. I’ve not seen this series but I’ve been told the series takes place before SERENITY.

The set of the internal scenes is one giant continuos set, so as the cast move say from the loading bay to the bridge they actually climb up through the set
Other tv shows would have each of those places as a separate bit and you'd just pretend that they moved through the ship to get from one to the other
Looking gorram shiny ladies 😍
While I wish there was more diversity (they use a lot of Chinese to have no Asian characters 😅) Firefly is a fun season.
Maybe most of the Asian families were all on the wealthy central planets?

lending credence to this theory is the fact that simon and river have the family name "tam", which is chinese. maybe simon's father was adopted? don't know, but no one we meet from the outer planets seems to have an asian surname.
Great video! ❤
♥️
That’s a parasol, not an umbrella.
after you finish the series of Firefly they also created a movie to close the series called Serenity that you should put on you as well i love them both please let me know what you think
Thanks for watching with us! We recorded these reactions last year. Originally the show was for Patreon only. We already have a reaction to Serenity on the channel. I think you will enjoy it a lot! 😸
@@RuntotheMovies thanks i didnt know that i wish the show got picked up for more seasons i loved this show
Welcome, Browncoats! 🤎
Hannah looks exactly like Kaylee.
❤🧡💛💚💙💜
13:43: Hannah you asked Whose that? A Surprise that’s who. 🤪
Shiny! Nice to see new people watching this gem, Firefly is one of the best SciFi shows of all time, cut short by very stupid execs at Fox. But probably because of that it became so popular and it's perfect from start to finish, there wasn't enough time to screw it up :)
Fun fact, in order to not have any swearing in the show and keep it friendly, they used Cantonese/Mandarin words to swear with instead. 'Humped' and 'Son of a bitch' are probably the worst English words used in the show, everything else is in Cantonese/Mandarin, or rather the Cantonese/Mandarin of the future. Enjoy the ride!
See You Space Cowboy.
Shiny!
"The PG version..."
They do swear on this show... It's just in Chinese...
I still haven't seen a sci-fi series anywhere near as good as this. Typical that Fox dropped it - they simply haven't a clue. They put it out in the wrong order at the worst possible time where hardly anyone saw it, and then because it wasn't an instant massive ratings success....
Kaylee is the karma of the show. Anytime someone treats her dirty, they get their just desserts before the end of that episode, lol.
Cool 😎 show
Welcome to cool people club 😂
they took the sky from us. couldn't even let us have a damn game. abusing Firefly to death proves american tv industry hates newthink. with a passion.
This is my favorite series for reaction videos! You can expect me to be watching every episode!
See you soon!
Jayne does have his flaws. But, I would have done what he did when Kaylee got shot. Looking forward to your reaction to the rest of the series and the movie.
Watching this with y'all I remember how much I loved it, and then I'm like "dammit why did Joss Whedon have to be an asshole?"
It's possible to separate the art from the artist.
This is true. I've found I'm still able to enjoy Buffy related content, and I do enjoy people's Firefly reactions.@@zahir12344
Great reaction. Please add Travelers to your watchlist. Thanks.
I like you had to explain "humped"
I have to believe that your inability to understand the scene with Inara and the needle stem from not Wanting to Know. cause I'd like to think it self-evident.
I really admire Hannah and Toy, they are both so beautiful, funny, intelligent, and tender hearted🥰
Just an fyi just in case you didn't know from your patrons. Firefly is set in the Alien universe. The large ship bombing them has the Wayland-Yutani logo.
I don't think It's in the same universe; more of an easter egg for the perceptive. Whedon was good at that.
@@Caseytify Well from what Ive read. Firefly is set in 2517, 138 years after the last Alien film Alien Resurrection. Considering what Earths condition was in that film, it would fittingly be the Earth that was.
And there's a Serenity-class ship in Battlestar Galactica
"It is a piece of crap"
HOW DARE
The plot point of Inara's syringe is a very distasteful bit of storytelling that Whedon luckily never got to tell. Which is fine, this pilot is strong as hell without having to go there.
"Distasteful" is purely a matter of personal preference. The pilot didn't have to go there, but it could have been good story fuel for season 2.
Shiny!
Top tier sci fi series, you're going to love it and the movie that caps it off
Yes! These reactions were recorded last year. The girls have already watched Serenity afterwards. The reaction is here on TH-cam.
OMG Welcome to the Browncoats!
♥️
All the cursing is in chinese so they could avoid the censers.
Woo hoo! So excited to see your journey through the 'verse.
Fun Fact: Nathan Fillion & Alan Tudyk reunited again in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 video game. They play as Cat Mascots.
🤡
There is a movie - SERENITY - but I wouldn’t watch it until u get through this series. I’ve not seen this series but I’ve been told the series takes place before SERENITY.
We recorded these reactions last spring and watched Serenity afterwards. The Serenity reaction is already here on TH-cam. I think that you would really enjoy it. 😻
I wish I was that 😺!!!
