My eye is always drawn to these boots in the background of your videos. They are just beautiful.

I live in a very rainy climate and I've found my Kudu leather boots to absorb moisture very easily. So I tried some Saphir Neatsfoot oil on them.
This is oil with a high concentration of neatsfoot oil and the consistency of cooking oil. It's not a cream and is sold in an orange bottle
I've found this works very well as a conditioner for shell cordovan and Chromexcel leather though it does darken the leather a little.
The oil was sucked up by the leather so quickly that even applying using fingers dipped in the oil meant that an even coat was not possible. So it has left the boots looking very patchy and after several days they have an interesting marbled leather or blotchy effect depending on your aesthetic tastes.
Not a terrible look for Kudu boots.
I probably could have made the boots one colour by really saturating them in oil though at the expense of the strength of the leather.
So, I would advise people to avoid oils on this leather as it seems to absorb product like a sponge and an even coat is very difficult to achieve.

This is very useful and I agree Kudu is a difficult one to care for!!!!

Would you recommend Saphir oiled cream with Badallasi Veg tan leather? Got a GS Field and would love to condition it.

Glad to see you using the Saphir product! Overall were you pleased with it? I started with Reneuvateur, then got into Pommadier Cream Polish and Pate Deluxe Waxes. Finally I used the Greasy Cream and switched into their other products. It's nice to see you trying new products!
I would only use that on oil infused or oil tanned leathers but agreed it is an amazing product! I did graduate to the Saphir MDO 1925 Oiled Leather Cream in neutral. It is my favorite for Chrome Excel, SB foot tanneries oiled leathers, Double Shot, and W&C's Oiled Latigo, pretty much anything with "pull -up" or combination veg tanned. Think of it as the step up from what you are using. But any oil infused outdoor wear especially combination tanned it is an excellent product.
I could also recommend the Saphir MDO 1925 Nappa Balm for veg tan leathers that weren't oil or wax infused. I almost wonder if your Kudu wouldn't have been more suited for it? It is my go to conditioner for Horween Essex as an example, or Wicket and Craig's bridle, or Badalassi Minerva, etc.
Lastly Smith's Leather Balm I pretty much reserve for heavily waxed leathers. Nick's 1964 series, their main work leathers they now call stiff, or Horween Essex. I do find that unless you use Saddle Soap after every 3-4 coats of routine conditioning you will get a beeswax build up.

I use Saphir MDO 1925 Nappa Balm on all Kudu and Rambler leather and so far it has deepened the colours sometimes when they have been dry but never hidden any of the character of the leathers. But I am in the UK where Saphir is the default and products like Ventian are hard to come by, so depending on where you live look for a conditioner produced to not affect the appearance of the leather or recommended by the manufacturer (or you have seen evidense such as here on the affects)

Hey Dale, thanks as always for sharing. I've learned a ton by watching your videos. Was happy to see you apply a liberal amount without any fear of doing damage. I find I'm always on the super conservative side when applying products. Unrelated to this, but do have any experience with Horween Chromepak leather? I bought the recent Viberg 2030 drop in Oak Chromepak (gets delivered tomorrow) and thinking ahead about conditioning etc. Thanks David

I don’t own any chromepak but I would treat it like CXL!

I just picked up a pair of grant stone storm kudu boots. Do you recommend spraying them first with some Tarrago nano protector?

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I wouldn’t spray the kudu with nano spray suede protector personally !

How resistant is Kudu to water? Was thinking about getting one of the Kudu boots.

It will absorb moisture but it also wicks it away!

Got some kudu leather docs recently. They were second hand and one boot feels a bit bigger than the other. Would doing the getting it wet and using a hairdryer to shrink it trick damage the leather?
