      Maybe just to keep the leather well conditioned and from cracking you just need to do this every so often. I'm sure it'll return back to it's worn in patina, and probably more striking the second or third time around.

    The folks at Horween say this about waxed flesh leather:
    It needs very little attention for quite some time. Eventually a waxed base conditioner is best. Obenaufs HD LP conditioner, Huberds shoe grease and Sno-Seal are suggested. Oils are not suggested. Again, this is from the tannery.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      they're absolutely correct, waxed flesh is treated so heavily they take forever to wear out! when the time comes to treat them, I agree traditional methods would work great. however I believe the birchees would be a superior treatment in terms of prepping them against harsh elements, as the birch tree tar offers a multitude of benefits beyond just conditioning the leather

    Nice video. A lot of patina on those boots. Is that because of the fact that it is a Rough out leather? While you spoke about the IR Copper Rough & Tough, could you do a comparison video if possible? The neck on these ones are smaller and looks more appealing than the IR's.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes! the patina is mostly due to the fact that these boots are roughout and they were worked seriously hard, oftentimes to the point that i didn't think they could ever look the same again lol!! i actually don't own any iron rangers in copper rough and tough, though i believe my RW moc toe workboots are a similar leather just with a pebble grain! it's true though the shaft on these java's are 6" i believe whereas the IR shaft is longer, maybe 7"

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you! honestly the cinnamon waxed flesh is a medium brown whereas birchees is a dark brown with a utilitarian purpose. the birchees will darken up your cinnamon WF but if you use them as real boots and don't mind cosmetically darkening them then i'd say the birchees is good! if not, you can try venetian leather balm

  • @_bats_
    @_bats_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Those look closer to what they looked like new, so maybe those products were the right ones for these boots!
    That said, I feel like when I watch your videos, that you have a tendency to just repeat whatever was spelled out in the literature or marketing materials from whatever company as if it were the gospel, but in cases where there aren't any regulations (boot products aren't regulated by the FDA, for instance), I think there are very few limitations as to the claims companies can make about their products. I would be very wary of whatever sorts of claims and of these companies make about their products.
    Horween specifically recommends Venetian Shoe Cream to re-treat their waxed flesh leathers, as the mixture of waxes and oils is fairly close to what they use to finish the waxed flesh surface in the first place.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yessir and in speaking to Lorne, he told me that as far as birch tree tar goes, Birch tar oil is far from well known, so information on it has to be self gained through trial and error. He tested it extensively against many oils / conditioners / waxes for their performance, longevity, and ability to resist damage and repel water. The birch tar far outperformed everything he tested them against!

    • @birchees7419
      @birchees7419 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree, there are no limitations as to what can be claimed by companies in the industry and in some cases that is exploited. It is partially self regulated though as well, if a company makes claims that their product does not hold up to it usually will not take too long before that becomes public knowledge. Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot. In other cases products only partially do what they claim but are backed by tradition and pushed through by the masses simply because of that.
      Lets take Neatsfoot oil as one example, which has a long history and much tradition behind it, commonly marketed as a leather restorer, rejuvenator, and water repellant. It works ok as a conditioner, but has next to 0 ability to repel water. 48 hours after application it has lost 100% of its ability to repel water. Not talked about is the fact that it does go rancid and in two different ways both oxidative and microbial rancidity which not only is bad for the leather but any stitching. This is true for all animal based products that I know of, some less than others.
      Minks oil will do the same thing but slower due to the fact that it has antioxidants in it. Another popular on atsko sno-seal loses its ability to repel water after only 7 days, totally unexpected!
      When I started developing and testing Birchees recipes the first thing I did once I had a good mix was start testing it against other products. I really wanted to bring something that was top notch to the table. I have tested extensively over the past year a wide variety of products and substances to see just how my recipes stacked up. What I quickly found is that in many cases things are not what they seem, products do not work as expected, or if they do they do not last nearly as long as what I expected.
      You can use just about anything to soften leather, butter, olive oil, toilet seal wax, bear grease, olive oil, the list is staggering. But the effects on the leather are often misinterpreted, the leather is dry, or hard so it just means it is time to put more. When in fact this is actually damage to the leather.
      I am putting together a somewhat extensive round of testing that will start this spring which should be pretty interesting. A large lineup of leather care products and "substances" will be tested over the course of a year, possibly longer. There will be may types of tests such as:
      - How long they repel water for after application.
      - Time to soak through
      - If they can resist salt damage and for how long
      - Oxidation in leather from air and light
      - Rancidity testing
      - Ability to resist bacteria, mold, and fungus
      - PH
      There is a few more but I cannot remember them off the top of my head, not sure either if I will be able to do them all as it is quite an undertaking and a few of them such as Rancidity testing will require help from a lab.
      These tests will be kept simple as possible and well documented so anybody can reproduce most of them, and not all that scientific. Want to see how they resist mold, fungus, bacteria? Put them away damp from swamp water in a drybag, leave it in a dark corner and check it every few weeks, something like that. Not scientific but still should give a fairly good idea of how they all stack up. Should be fun!
