So this video didn’t go as planned, by the end you hear the sad news, but I think the tank turned out great and my crabs are loving it. Thank you all for your patience and I hope you enjoyed the video even with the sad end. These things happen and sadly I always knew this was possible. Hope you guys enjoy seeing my crabs and have a wonderful weekend! ❤️

Hey Lori! I had a question, I am thinking about spending money on an Exo-Terra for my 2 hermit crabs. I have had them for about 2 years and they are happy and thriving in a 30 gallon tall. I was thinking of buying the one like you use to have, the square one, do you think my crabs would be happy in it? It’s expensive and I kind of want to find out if I should spend the money on it, because I think my crabs would be super happy and thrive even more. And I could have a lot more easy access to the tank.

Hi Lori! I’m so sorry to hear that your new crab passed away. It can be so difficult to lose even a new hermit crab.
If in the future, you do ever decide to rescue another friend, I have a tip that may help! We have found a method that helps with PPS (post purchase stress)/PPDS(post purchase death syndrome). It’s a four week quarantine period in which you help the hermit crab focus on eating healthy foods and drinking water before they go to molt for the first time with you. Like you said, you can still do everything right and your hermit crab can pass away. The same applies to this method but we have really seen good results with this method and it may be worth looking into. We do have a video on the topic if you are curious and want more information.
Again, I am sorry about your little friend

They’re hella stressed when we get them. They’ve been so abused by the time they’re ours, sometimes coming home is the final stressor that kills them (they were going to die soon whether we took them or not, but at least we could give them a comfortable home. I lost two crabs. One from stress and the other died from a flood in the tank (i actually think one of my water dishes was leaking, not a problem now as I have two critter keepers for their water (one is a gallon and the other is a liter. I meant to get another liter one as my crabs are small, but you know what? We’re gonna roll with it.

@@nogoodnecktie12you shouldn’t spray as it can cause a flood. If you get an air pump and run the tubing into their water dish (assuming it’s deep. I understand that you've had your crabs for 10 years and they've been healthy but protein really is an essential part of a hermit crab's diet and I hope that you can start adding it into your crabs' diet as well.

Hey Lori, I had a couple of questions:
Whats your reasoning on not mixing play sand into the substrate with Eco earth?
Also, Ive always read that you should never dig up a crab unless you know that its already dead?
And lastly, on the heat pad, Ive also read that you should always have it above your substrate....it appears you put it right at the level of sub? Any reason for that?
Thank you and sorry your loss!

    • @CrabJelly5225
      @CrabJelly5225 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

That’s what I’ve noticed too. It’s like she’s ignoring the problem because she hasn’t updated on the crabs in 2 years which leads me to believe she either gave them away or accidentally killed them with poor husbandry. They can’t burrow in just eco earth. Just eco earth is fine for some REPTILES but the crabs come from Sandy mangroves and need it to molt. And the heating pads are such a basic thing for hermit crabs but she’s putting it under the tank because that’s what you do for reptiles. I think she also fails in the lack of climbing materials and the fact that she was the wrong shaped shells. She’s done very little research if she did any past the person who sold her the crabs.

My crabitat is different. I have a 10 gallon tank with 5 inches of sand for them to burrow and molt, and got a bunch of decorations used in other fish tanks. For example, I got fake plantation for them to climb and hide, same for decorative wood and rocks in natural and non-toxic color. I got a giant water pool from an giant shell and a spunge. And I have vegetation for them (like lettuce). And for the top I have a model of a nautilus and two jellyfish on top hanging from the lid. I have nine hermits and im planing on getting more. I've spent over a $100 on the tank, and everything in it. My hermits are like my babies and I want to give them everything to make them happy.

I'll have to use some plexi to add a higher lip for substrate but the enclosure is almost a 4ft by 2ft by 13in high. thinking of doing a radiant heat panel on the top, it heats the air but the surface itself doesn't get hot to the touch

I really need advice. My sister and her kids recently went to South Padre Island and my nephew convinced my sister to get a hermit crab. They went to the little shop, picked out a big one and a small one and then got another small one for free. They of course were given the small little plastic container, painted shells, etc. I am an experienced Turtle owner, so I knew to do my research as soon as I found out she got them and came across a bunch of information, including this channel, that they had nothing they needed. However, I did not come across this video in time. When they got home, they filled the tank up with moistened play sand to the 6 inches, water bowls, etc. a few days ago, the bigger crab died. Now there are the two little ones. My sister has been caring for them to the best of her ability but the kids aren’t helping like they were supposed to so now she wants me to take the crabs. I got them today, and now I’m coming across this video and I have no clue what to do since they’re already in this set up tank directly after being purchased, and one has already passed. The small ones are alive, we’ve been looking in to see new movement and new burrow holes. Today since I got the tank, the past couple hours, I have only seen one of the crabs moving around. I don’t know if the other one is trying to molt but it is definitely in the sand. I really need help..

I have 2 hermit crabs at college. I'm trying to figure out what to do for Christmas break. I don't want to try to bring their 20 gallon home on a 3 hour car ride, but I am going to have to be home for a month. I've came to the conclusion that a bin cage might be the best option because it will hold humidity really well on the drive and I can leave them in there for the duration of break as temporary housing. This way, when I come back after break I can leave them in there for a couple of weeks to destress from the car ride as well. What do you guys think? Is there a better solution?

I have done this method with my new crab. She only has small amount of substrate at first so she will start eating and does not bury herself alive. Let's see if it works!

What watt do I need for a small tank? 4 or 8? I plan to get 2 of the tiniest I can find. I am very experienced from yrs ago but with the internet I want to like really up my game. I never thought about doing it on the bottom being bad! You've given me so much to think aabout. Is a heat lamp bad? I have the 11 gallon Zilla vertical to start. I know my husband will get crazy soon and make them a massive tank. He always does lol.

I clicked over so fast! Did you see that Leanne called you out and watched your videos because she rescued hermit crabs and had no idea how to take care of them! Isn’t that awesome 🤩 Ok, I’m going to finish watching now lol Dang, he must be huge! Oh god, I just watched the rest of the video 😢 I’m really sorry 😢 Well, they have a paradise to play in now. Leanne showed in her video how they take the crabs out of their shells for the pet trade to put them in the painted ones, it’s HORRIFYING! And the painted ones are toxic to the poor hermit crabs! Why do people do things like that? It showed a giant vat of shell-less hermit crabs, millions of them! And most won’t even make it it to the pet store! They need to ban the sale of hermit crabs! I’m really sorry again about your new guy 😢 You are such an amazing woman! The passion you have for animals is so inspiring and beautiful ☺️ Thank You 🙏 for sharing your knowledge and your sweet animals 🐶🐱🐢🦎🕷🦀 Tons of love 💜 Kymberly

I have two hermit crabs that I do not feel I can care for properly, what should I do? I've looked for forums to rehome them to someone else, etc. I unfortunately did not do enough research before getting them and want them to have a good life, but don't feel like I have the time to care properly for them.
