    Love the video but I have a few suggestions remove the styrofoam because they will try to eat it or try to dig through it, and don’t add more water with the crabs in there because it could flood them if they are under, also put the heater on the back of the tank you never want to heat substrate because it could cook your crabs when they are digging/molting

    • @AnimalLoverChanL
      @AnimalLoverChanL  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you. I am unable to remove the styrofoam at this time. Because if I did, I would need to fill the empty space with substrate that I do not have right now. but I will try adding some extra protection so that they cannot get near it. Like I said, I did cover the styrofoam in Scotch tape and Scotch tape is pretty tough to grip or tear, even for crabs. But I'll still add something😉. I did have to add more water so that the substrate is damp enough to hold its shape for burrowing/molting purposes. I did make sure all of the crabs were at the surface before doing so. And I have had a flooded hermit crab tank once before and I'm making sure not to let that happen again. So I'm only adding enough water to saturate all the substrate evenly. To make sure I'm not flooding the substrate, I can always check by digging a little well through the substrate and seeing if it fills with water or not. I would've put the heater on one of the walls, but this terrarium isn't designed for that and even if I could, it's too late to move it since the instructions say to not remove the heat mat after placing. Also, in order to remove it I would have to remove all of the substrate and decor in order to lift the terrarium to take it off. I will adjust the heat mat temp to where it isn't too hot but just warm enough to not do any harm. I do have a temperature gun to measure surface temps. Thank you for your suggestions and caring about my hermit crabs safety. I hope my answers were reasonable. And thank you for watching.😉❤

      Another reason not to use your heater under the tank is because your substrate will constantly dry up from the direct heat on the damp substrate. You’ll constantly need to add water to it and will also dry up their environment air. I strongly suggest simply buying a new heat mat that doesn’t stick like people use to grow plants and just use aluminum tape to tape it on the back. It is what I have done. And make sure you have it above the substrate.

    This is pretty, but as you've mentioned several times in the video, you didn't give enough for thought or researched proper setup..It would be wonderful to see how you fix all of the problem areas once you learned proper husbandry for hermit crabs. You have the drive but lack full knowledge.

    • @AnimalLoverChanL
      @AnimalLoverChanL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thank you for your kindness but I'm not quite sure what you mean. Because I feel like there isn't much more improvement to be made. If you could tell me what knowledge you think I'm lacking, I'd appreciate that. All I can think of what needs improvement is placing the heater on the side rather than the bottom. Covering the sitrofome with something stronger, making the substrate the proper constistancy, and adding some plastic around most of the terrarium mesh walls to help keep heat and humidity in. All of which I did actually end up doing. But recently I did remove the foam completely. My hermit crabs appear to be very content and I haven't lost any of these 5 or had a sick one ever since I got them 7 years ago. I was a child when I got them and unlike most kids, I did do lots of research beforehand and I feel like there isn't much more to learn now. But I am willing to if someone thinks that I do have more to learn.

    Hey I have an automatic fogger in mine and it seems to wake them up on occasion, this might be a little ridiculous to ask but do you think that could be linked to a lack of activity in them?

    • @AnimalLoverChanL
      @AnimalLoverChanL  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure, usually my crabs aren't very active either, they just like to chill. However, when I make noises in there cage or move things, they walk around all over the place to investigate. If you think your fogger might be a reason for their inactiveness, remove it for a while and see if there is any changes. There are other reasons why hermit crabs are inactive, like maybe the ambient temperature is too cold or their habitat doesn't have enough climbing or hiding things, for enrichment purposes. Plus, hermit crabs are nocturnal. So they aren't usually going to be active when we are.

    • @BranTheMan_

      Yeah I think I solved it, I have three heaters in a giant 40 gallon tank but unfortunately that isn’t enough to withstand the frigidness of the winter so I hooked up my old heat lamp yesterday and had one of my hermit crabs climb around the entire terrarium in a matter of hours and after that finally going to sleep.

    Can you please tell me how to make salt water? I don’t use tap.. should I add instant ocean to spring?

    • @AnimalLoverChanL
      @AnimalLoverChanL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can add instant ocean to spring water. The Instant Ocean box does have instructions for making a gallon of saltwater. It's half a cup of salt per US gallon of water. Or you can do 1 1/2 teaspoons per cup of water. In the past, when I used a smaller salt water pool for my crabs, I would just make a gallon of saltwater and then use that already prepped saltwater to fill the pool whenever I needed to change out their saltwater. Now I take out all the water in their large pool and add 1 cup of salt to the pool and then I pour in 2 gallons of conditioned tap water. It helps mix up the salt by pouring the water in on top of the salt. (Make sure to save some spring water for the freshwater bowl😉.) With hermit crabs you can be a little less careful when making saltwater. But if it was for saltwater fish then you would need a hydrometer to measure the gravity.

    its looks nice but you need at least a 60 gallon tank for that amount of crabs, and don't heat the substrate, very dangerous and styrofoam will kill them when they molt.

    • @AnimalLoverChanL
      @AnimalLoverChanL  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. It is a 67 gallon terrarium. And I figure they still have enough sand/dirt to molt peacefully, since they most likely won't all molt at the same time. I did end up removing the styrofoam when I got more sand/dirt to fill that space in. But, so you know, the styrofoam was covered in plastic and a few days later, I added plexiglass around it, so that the crabs wouldn't actually have any exposure to the foam. I'm still never going to put foam in there again. And I did realize that I got false information about the substrate needing to be heated and I turned that heat pad off, even though I did have it set to a really low temp. And I got a new heat pad and put it on the back wall.

    Hey so I have a hermit crab and the substrate always gets dry and I feel like every time I mist it the next day it gets dryer and my hermit crabs molting at the minute so do you have any food advice

    • @AnimalLoverChanL
      @AnimalLoverChanL  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The surface of the substrate being dry is okay as long as the rest of the substrate is damp. To check this, simply carefully dig a hole through the substrate to the bottom of the tank. If the hole holds its shape, then the substrate is wet enough. If that hole started filling up with water, then the substrate is far too saturated. But if the hole does not hold its shape, then what you need to do after that crab comes back up from molting, is poor a good amount of water directly onto the substrate and then mix up all of the substrate thoroughly to evenly distribute that water. Keep adding water and mixing until a hole can hold its shape anywhere in the substrate. And after that, just make sure that most of the substrate, underneath the surface, is damp enough. Even if the surface is dry. What you should do right now though, while your crab is molting, is keep spraying that substrate. Unless of course you are able to make a hole that holds its shape. Then there is no need to worry about spraying that dry top layer. A good mixture of substrate for hermit crabs is natural play sand and eco earth. The sand helps make burrowing easier and the eco earth retains moisture. So having those too substrates mixed together makes for some great digging and molting. I don't know if this reply was helpful at all but I understand your issue. I have it too. I guess we just have to poor in water & mix now and again. So that we don't have to spray every day.

      I am really sorry to hear that.😥 It is possible that that happened because there were only two. But there are other reasons depending on the care and the crabs themselves. If you can't get more crabs (that are the same size as your crab), then I don't think there is anything you can do except give this one crab the best life possible and hope that it doesn't get depressed and dies.

    • @AnimalLoverChanL
      @AnimalLoverChanL  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is very normal for hermit crabs to dig in the substrate. They usually do it to molt. And they must NOT be disturbed if they are molting. Molting can last weeks to months depending how big the crab is. It's hard to tell if they are actually molting or just hiding underground. But either way, it's no cause for concern. I hope you don't just have one crab, because they are social animals and need to be in groups. Otherwise they can become depressed and die. I don't know anything about your setup but just in case your crab is trying to molt, make sure you have either natural play sand or Eco Earth. Or both mixed together. And make sure the substrate is damp enough to where you can make a sand castle.😉

      @@thatshowjumper1189 Your welcome🙂 and that's good. Yes, you don't have to do anything except keep the temperature levels good and the substrate damp. And as long as he's underground, you don't have to mist the tank. Also, be careful not to over mist when you do. Because with my tank, the top layer of substrate always drys out. But underneath, the substrate is still very moist and if I keep dampening that top layer to make it wet, I'm just basically adding too much water over time and that can flood my tank. So that's just a heads up. And to check if your substrate is flooded, you can poke a deep hole in the dirt and wait and see if it fills with water like a well. And if it does, then the substrate is flooded. If it doesn't, then you should be good.

      @AnimalLoverChanL  ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is, the sand gets really cold in the winter. I wanted the crabs to still be warm when molting. I knew the dangers of having the heat pad temp set too high. I had it set super low to where it was only warm to the touch. The bottom of the terrarium has double glass anyway, and so the heat pad is not directly under the sand. I no longer have that head pad turned on unless the floor gets freezing cold, then I just turn it on to be warm to the touch. I did end up getting another heat pad to put on the back wall for warming the air.

    Hello

  • @CrybabyCat02
    @CrybabyCat02 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if this is still what your tank setup is like or if your hermit crabs are even still alive but please read hermit crab care guides from Land Hermit Crab Owners Society and/or watch care videos by Crab Central Station. This tank is not appropriate for hermit crabs at all. It has too much ventilation because of the screen sides. Hermit crabs are supposed to live in a humid environment, 85% humidity is one of, if not the most, basic but important requirements of their care. The humidity in the average house is much too low to meet that requirement. Since your hygrometer is broken, you have no idea what the humidity is like in your tank. It varies depending on where you live but for reference, the average humidity in my home in the Southeast is around 40%. That is way too low for a hermit crab to breathe properly. Let me reiterate, without the proper humidity, your crabs will suffocate and die. There's also not NEAR enough substrate or space for the crabs to safely burrow and molt. You need at least 10 gallons of molting space per crab. That means ten gallons of open floor space in the tank. You cut that down severely by adding heavy decor, a giant water dish, and Styrofoam under the sand (which i still don't understand the purpose of???). The heating pad is supposed to be across the back side of your tank, not on the bottom. That alone is incredibly dangerous for your crabs, as it could cook them while they're burrowed in the substrate molting. As a longtime hermit crab owner, this whole tank setup gives me extreme anxiety. Please do your research, it can and will literally save your hermit crabs' lives.

    • @AnimalLoverChanL
      @AnimalLoverChanL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I thank you for your knowledge and sharing your concerns nicely. I am subscribed to crab central station. And I personally don't believe there is one good way of caring for hermit crabs. My crabs are doing really great in this terrarium. I had the same concerns about the ventilation and I did add plastic around the terrarium for a while. But after getting new humidity/temp gauges, I realized that even with all this ventilation, it stays perfectly humid inside and I do keep up with misting, but I don't have to do it everyday. And it was my knowledge that the depth of the substrate just has to be deep enough to cover the hermit crab along with a few inches above it. I would add more depth if I could, but I can't with this terrarium. I don't believe it's too heavily decorated, they can still easily go underneath the decor and they do. I've had this setup for a while now and there have been several successful and safe molts. I did remove the styrofoam a while ago. It's purpose was to fill in what I didn't have enough substrate for at the time. I also wasn't sure yet how strong this terrarium was, so I didn't want to put in too much weight at first. I imagined that heat pads couldn't be hot enough to cook a crab or that the crab would even stay underground if it was too hot. So I thought it fine to have it underneath, especially since this terrarium is built for heat pads to be underneath. But other comments did warn me about how I shouldn't have a heater underneath. I was careful tho in making sure it wasn't going to be hot, by using my heat gun. And I had the head pad set so low that it was barley even warm. I did later get a new heat pad and put it on the back. The giant water dish is only big because I want my crabs to be able to bathe in a salt water pool as well as for there to be a filter in it, which is what the waterfall is, and it also acts as a climbing thing. I pay close attention to my crabs actions and I really do care about their well-being. By the looks of my crabs, I must be doing good enough. They don't seem to struggle with anything or act stressed. In their old tank they would eat artificial decor, and try to escape the tank. But they don't do that in here and they appear very happy and healthy. It's highly likely that when my crabs get bigger, I will upgrade them. But for now, this appears ideal for them. I hope you can at least be happy with the changes I did make, since making this video. I've had my crabs since 2015 and none have died or had any health problems. That's gotta mean something right?
