I love seeing wheels put to use with animals they're not exactly intended for. I mean, it's commonly known that hamsters enjoy (and need!) a wheel and at least in the community also that mice do. But they're really just a great exercise tool for all animals that would walk long distances a day in the wild (as long as they're the right size and otherwise safe of course), so seeing that your crabs enjoy them too is pretty cool

We are all on a journey! We started with a kritter keeper that had cat litter! Can you even imagine???? The beach shop We got them from said it will keep the crab from smelling. Now look where we are..... it's all part of the journey.
My husband and I purchased some hermit crabs about 2 months ago thinking we had a good idea of how to care for them and then figured out we knew absolutely nothing! VERY long story short, I have found your videos and our crabs are doing great! We currently have two 55 gallon tanks connected with a 20 gallon long topper! We just purchased an additional 75 gallon tank that we plan on connecting with a topper (not sure on the size yet) to the other tanks. I am trying to decide on design concept for the new tank. I am IN LOVE with the concept of the 40 gallon topper you have with the cork bark background and the coco condos! I have a question though that I would appreciate if you could answer! 😊 do you have a heater on your 40 gallon topper? I want to glue cork bark tiles all on the back of my 75 gallon but I am worried that it will block the heat coming into the tank. Someone mentioned in one of the hermit crab groups I’m in that it would block the heat. Could you clarify? Thank you so much! I love everything about y’all and your tanks!!! You’ve helped me and my crabs so much!!!
Oh, what sweet words! Thank you for your support. We are so glad you have joined us on your journey here at CCS! It sounds like you are doing a great job! Upgrading tanks and toppers - awesome!!! We do not have a heat mat on our toppers. Being in Texas, it stays pretty warm year round. If we needed more heat in the toppers, we can add one to the sides rather then the back. The heat mat will warm up the cork bark, which will warm the air in the topper.
Great video! Thanks for showing us around and all the hard work you put into these videos! I know they are not easy in the slightest. As always, you've inspired me to keep working on my own hermit crab tank build. I ordered coconuts from Sri Lanka and I'm just wanting on them to come in!
Thank you so much! Luckily our house is sitting on a concrete slab and this room is on the first floor. We did anchor the stands to the studs of the wall though, for extra security.
I think you said something about showing how you organize your crab food. That would be super helpful for storage and deciding what to feed them. Also another random question, how often do you give each category? And if you notice they’re really liking something, do you keep giving it day after day (along with other stuff) or do you change EVERYTHING every day? Like my crabs keep GORGING on the new popcorn mixes from hermit grub but wasn’t sure if I should keep letting them pig out or “make” them eat other types of food lol.
Awesome! We are excited about that one too. We have tried several different methods and we think we have finally found one that works for us! We offer all categories each night... but we have a big colony. For a small number of crabs I would offer protein every night and then switch out all the other categories during a week's time. We usually totally switch up what we offer every few days. Eventually you'll get back to that popcorn 😆
@@CrabCentralStation also, not sure if you have any plans on this but I would be interested in learning how the filters work in your pools. Thanks again!
I took in 2 surrendered hermies, poor things came in a 5 gallon with nothing 😢, they now live happily with their 4 adopted siblings in a 40 gallon breeder with a 40 gallon topper 🥰
I’m starting out and I’d like to have a topper with the large doors. I have a 90gallon tank. My question is do I cut the glass out on the bottom of the topper and turn it upside down. If how do you get the glass out of the bottom of the topper?
@@CrabCentralStation Caribbean crabs commonly consume sea grape in the wild. I’m building a big tank so I’m gonna plant one in a pot with crab safe soil and see how they like it.
New follower here! Do the cork flat backgrounds or box tree backgrounds affect the heat at all being in front of the heater? Thanks! Your videos are so helpful and informative!
Thanks for watching! I’m so glad our videos are helping you! The backgrounds do not effect the heat. They actually help! The heat mats heat the objects in the tank and those items heat the air.
I'm kind of picky on having clean glass 😁. I spend a lot of time in this room watching my crabbies explore... I want to make sure I can see them. It's a lot of work though.
We are new to hermit crabs and I’ve learned so much from you already but I’m curious what you’re process is for cleaning and freezing the left litter? I would really like to add this but worried about bringing bugs into the tank. Thank You!
Welcomento the "crabby" life and CCS! We rinse our leaf litter in prime treated water, lay on a towel to dry, then we place it in ziplocknbags and keep them in the freezer. 48 hours is good before the first time feeding it, but we just store them in the freezer and take out a handful as needed.
It does not interfere with the heat mat at all. The heat mat heat the objects and air with in the tank. Here is a link to the box bush. www.google.com/search?q=artificial+box+bush&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS911US911&sxsrf=AOaemvIzO8aTC0_Hg1WtRrI2HCH2xDdHIQ:1630870487536&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj2m9WAyujyAhVSbs0KHXIYD80Q_AUoAXoECAIQAw&biw=1440&bih=789#spd=8775279947184699820
Amazing! I have two small pools in my crabitat (fresh and salt water), but it evaporates so fast and I'm afraid the salt water isnt right anymore.. How do you keep this from happening?
Hi! Sorry for the delay in response! Chances are that the pools need to be moved away from the heat source. The other thing to check for is a leak in the water bowl. The final suggestion is to get a bigger water bowl.
How do crabs get along with neighbors. I have shrimp and was wondering if they could share the pool, as it were. Just watching these videos, I have so many ideas but not the knowledge to make it happen.
I dont see the link to the background, faux bush thing.....did I miss it? Also, I assume you have no issues with it interfering with the heat tape in the back???
We have not had any issues at all with the heat penetration. Our tanks even stayed warm during the big Texas Ice Storm this winter 😁 www.amazon.com/SIMBR-Artificial-Protected-Backyard-Decoration/dp/B08ZSMRB84/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=artificial+boxwood+hedge+panels&qid=1624284679&sprefix=artificial+boxwood+&sr=8-4#
We don’t have a light on our tank. Our top is just glass and we just bought a plain 29 gallon long tank, what type of light do you recommend we get for our crabbies?
I do have to ask, how many coats of white paint did you have to use on the lime green paint to make sure it was not showing throw, I forgot to ask you about that.
We drill tiny holes in the edge of the rim of the tank, the part of the rim that the glass top sits on, the little ledge. Then we used small zip ties to attach the box bush. The bottom of the box bush is buried in the substrate. In one of our toppers we siliconed the box bush to the back of the glass. Use 100% silicone with no mold inhibitors. Allow to dry completely and air out before attaching it and allowing the crabs to climb/live.
Do I need to sterilize or clean any items that I buy from the pet store? Speaking abt the wood, or foliage, because I have rlly been thinking abt that recently! (I do boil my shells in the salt water) but I’m asking more about the decor, do I need to clean those somehow before putting in the tank if it’s from the store?
Items from the stores are usually sanitized before sale. You can add them to your tank. We just released a foraging video that teaches you how to sanitize items that you find in your own area.
Heres a greta place to get worm castings from www.etsy.com/listing/737706755/worm-castings-hermit-crab-food?ga_search_query=worm%2Bcastings&ref=shop_items_search_2&crt=1
Love the videos! I have a question, how do you prevent algae growth in the pools? Do you just change the water daily? How would one go about keeping a clear bathing pool free of algae and biofilms. Thanks!
Great question. We filter our pools and clean them monthly. We do have some algae growth sometimes, but it is not harmful to the hermit crabs. You can try some algae eating snails/fish, but once you have animals living in the pools, you will need to keep on top of your water quality. We have live sand, live rock, and live plants in our pools as well. Those items all help with water quality.
Could u possibly help me I have a 50 60 gallon tank and I have a heater Matt on the back and it’s not really heating the tank what can I do to help I don’t have glass lids yet what would you recommend to do 💕
Until the tank is sealed completely, you will not be able to maintain heat and humidity. We have a video on heat and humidity as well as a video on how to keep your Hermit Crabs Warm during winter. Those two videos might be able to answer your questions.
We use reptile tanks. They have a screen too that can be removed. Then, we invert the tank so that the open side is down and the bottom glass becomes the sealed top!
I know this is a kinda invasive inquiry, but I'd love to know a ballpark figure on how much you spent on 1) tanks, 2) substrate mix, 3) Lighting & heating, & 4) decorations. I'd love to create something similar! @Crab Central Station
Where do you get your tanks if the door I am planning to make a 2 floor and were did you get medium smells? I keep going to the pet store and trying to find some natural shells but there aways out.?
Maybe this is a stupid question but how many crabs do you have? I have two in a twenty gallon tank. I never considered having such deep substrate however. Maybe three inches at most. Learning alot!
Hello! Not a stupid question at all! Thank you for joining us on our channel! We have about 40 hermit crabs in our main tank build (750 gallons) and a few crabs peppered across our baby tanks! (We aren’t too sure of the exact number because we are a rehabilitation center for sick crabs, so we always have a fluctuation of “patients”)
Hi Katie, this is probably one of the most frustrating parts of our build! I use a paint stick and wrap a paper towel around it. Then carefully stick it in-between the glass and water pool. If you are getting a lot of condensation, it could be that your room is too cold. You can try placing a blanket over the tank (maybe just at night while you sleep). That might help cut down on some of the condensation. In our tank cleaning video I show you the paint stick/paper towel trick!
How often should you change up your hermit tank, because after my hermies are done molting I need to move around my tank, and pools to get the humidity up higher. So I just wanted to know if it would stress them out to much is O did they
I may have missed where you mentioned this in the vid, but where you have toppers that are not as long as your full tank, how are you covering the rest of the tank? I don't have any crabbies yet, still plotting and researching, but I would definitely want the added height of a topper, ideally the same dimensions as the tank below. However, if it does not turn out to be budget friendly for me to get a topper the same size, what type of additional covering would be good to use? Especially if one of those hinged glass lids does not fit beside the topper. I want to make sure I would be covering it with something safe for them should they climb up and try to pick at it.
Those are curtain tension rods that I completely wrapped in natural jute rope. Any exposed metal will rust in the humidity of the tank, so make sure it is covered really well. We love them!
Amazing video!! This now becomes my dream room lol! Also wondering which kind of glue are you using to attach the cholla on the tank for the climbing wall? I am thinking about doing the same to my new tank! Appreciate in advance :)
Hermit crabs of all sizes can live together happily. In fact, sometimes having very different sizes can help because then they aren't all fighting for the same size shells.
We use 100% silicone (but crabs can not be in the tank while using it). We also use tension rods (from walmart) and wrap them in jute twine. That allows you to hang things vertically.
Hey there, I don't know if this is a good place to ask, but I just upgraded from a 15 gallon tank to a 50 gallon tank for my hermies. Is there anything I can use the old small tank for, or should I just sell it off? Thank you so much!
Wow! Yay! What a great upgrade for your crabbies! Oh my goodness, you're crabs are going to be so excited about all the space! For your question, yes! Keep the 15g for an emergency isolation tank. It will come in handy if you need to separate a crab from the rest of the group, it happens sometimes.
It really depends on the size of the hermit crab. I would get the same size wheel as you have hermit crab. So, small crab = small wheel, medium crab= medium wheel, ect.

We do not have a heat mat on our toppers. Being in Texas, it stays pretty warm year round. If we needed more heat in the toppers, we can add one to the sides rather then the back. The heat mat will warm up the cork bark, which will warm the air in the topper.
Awesome video! I'd love to see a video about your go to foraging foods/items and dried foods you were talking about in this video.
That’s such a good idea! We will definitely make that video
@@CrabCentralStation awesome thanks. I'm setting up a 20 gallon long but want to learn everything possible before getting any crabs 🥰
And, thanks for supporting, we appreciate you! Oh! Oh! please show us the huts when they come in!!! How exciting!
OMS IT'S SO GORGEOUS!! Sweet, spoiled babies
Thank you so much! We poured our heart and soul into this build! The crabs seem to LOVE it!
@@CrabCentralStation No problem! You can tell ^_^ And I have no doubt they do ❤️
This is the most amazing tank!! I cant help but wonder did you need to reinforce your floors at all to hold all that weight?
Thank you so much! Luckily our house is sitting on a concrete slab and this room is on the first floor. We did anchor the stands to the studs of the wall though, for extra security.
Absolutely amazing. Those are some lucky crabbies.
Thank you so much!
I love how beautiful those shell's are in the shell shop where you have your certification on the wall
Thanks!
Amazing setup!
Thank you so much!
Can’t wait for more videos that you mentioned. Thanks for the content!
Every other Thursday 😁
Which one are you most looking forward to?
What do you guys use to keep the sand from getting in between the pools and the main tank?
We are trying a rubber weather stripping. It works okay.... not great, to be honest.
I took in 2 surrendered hermies, poor things came in a 5 gallon with nothing 😢, they now live happily with their 4 adopted siblings in a 40 gallon breeder with a 40 gallon topper 🥰
Amazing setup.
Thanks!
I’m starting out and I’d like to have a topper with the large doors. I have a 90gallon tank. My question is do I cut the glass out on the bottom of the topper and turn it upside down. If how do you get the glass out of the bottom of the topper?
you guys sure love your hermit crabs ❤️❤️❤️
Yes. We. Do. 🥰
It's the crab heaven of every crabbies dream! 💖
Thank you! They seem to be really enjoying it.
@@CrabCentralStation It's inspired me to upgrade mine, I created a little swimming oasis for ours and he loves it!
That's GREAT!!! Our crabs love swimming too 🥰
I’ve been thinking of doing a brackish pool as well
Let's share ideas!
@@CrabCentralStation Caribbean crabs commonly consume sea grape in the wild. I’m building a big tank so I’m gonna plant one in a pot with crab safe soil and see how they like it.
Yes!!! We want to start some in our saltwater tank so that we have some to feed the zoeoa. I would like to try a brackish pool/mangrove marsh 😍
@@CrabCentralStation I’ve also considered mangroves and spider plants
We tried a live plant in this build.... brevi's destroyed it on the first night! LOL!!!
Wow! So beautiful and clean! My crabitat gets so dirty and messy!!
@@CrabCentralStation thank you so much for the response!
Man, thank you for the idea, I'm going to buy 2 more 40 gallon tanks and put them together.
Awesome!
I got my lipstick at home depo, I see the home depo box there, it is still so cute how the little one says it.
My fav!
@@CrabCentralStation The same with me
Where do you get the leaf backing on the tank, and how does that work with putting the heat mat?
It does not interfere with the heat mat at all. The heat mat heat the objects and air with in the tank.
Here is a link to the box bush.

Hi! How well has your Timothy hay hide/shell shop held up? Any mold with it sitting on the sub?
We haven’t had any issues. I think partly because we started with 100% dry substrate and it’s in such a large tank that the humidity is very stable.
You have a small fortune in your set up, but it’s amazing.
I had no idea all the tanks were connected! Thats amazing.
Q: I'm in Texas where there is limestone EVERYWHERE. Can I use that in the tank?
Thanks! Yes, you can use limestone in the tank. It can get heavy so make sure it has some good support underneath.
What are the minimum size water containers that should be used for a 65 gal tank
You can use 1 - 2.5 gallon pools
I dont see the link to the background, faux bush thing.....did I miss it? Also, I assume you have no issues with it interfering with the heat tape in the back???
We have not had any issues at all with the heat penetration. Our tanks even stayed warm during the big Texas Ice Storm this winter 😁

I agree with purple crab, that is alot of lime green
Yeah, it really was. The Grey is so much better!
@@CrabCentralStation Right on, I have some ideas I would like to talk to you about, please pm me on messenger, I just now thought of them.
Just got a hermit crab but what’s best an aquarium or terrarium I’ve seen them live in both
They need minimum 6 inches of substrate to molt in safely. Terrariums are typically too shallow for a good amount of substrate.
Lovely tank
Thank you 🥰
Planning to get hermit crabs soon and I thought you were supposed to mist their tank with water?
We don’t have a light on our tank. Our top is just glass and we just bought a plain 29 gallon long tank, what type of light do you recommend we get for our crabbies?
We get LED aquarium lights!
I do have to ask, how many coats of white paint did you have to use on the lime green paint to make sure it was not showing throw, I forgot to ask you about that.
LOL! Just 2.... and a lot of time!
@@CrabCentralStation ok cool, if I may ask, who painted the color lime green?
Great video.
Thanks!
Love all the work that gets put into this channel. Where do you get stuff like the rock at 2:08?
We got the live rock from a local aquarium store. The brown rock we got from PetsMart, it is called Dragon Rock. We use river rock on the bottom.
How did you guys connect the box Bush to the tank?
We drill tiny holes in the edge of the rim of the tank, the part of the rim that the glass top sits on, the little ledge. Then we used small zip ties to attach the box bush. The bottom of the box bush is buried in the substrate.
In one of our toppers we siliconed the box bush to the back of the glass. Use 100% silicone with no mold inhibitors. Allow to dry completely and air out before attaching it and allowing the crabs to climb/live.
Awesome video! Nice tanks!! Wow
Thank you so much!
What type of worm castings are you referring to?
When you juxtapose two tanks, how do you remove the glass?
We use reptile tanks. They have a screen too that can be removed. Then, we invert the tank so that the open side is down and the bottom glass becomes the sealed top!
@@CrabCentralStation Hi, thanks for responding. I understand how a tank on the top connects, but what about the ones you have side by side?
Where did you get your green/red succulent "tree" with 3 stalks? Do you have a link? Thanks!
I don’t have a link - I’m so sorry!!! I found it at my local Michael’s craft store during their spring collection.
We get our tanks off of Facebook market. Our shells come from www.theshellshop.com
@@CrabCentralStation thank you! Sorry I am late
Both my hermit crabs are molting, should I feed thrm
Maybe this is a stupid question but how many crabs do you have? I have two in a twenty gallon tank. I never considered having such deep substrate however. Maybe three inches at most. Learning alot!
Hello! Not a stupid question at all! Thank you for joining us on our channel! We have about 40 hermit crabs in our main tank build (750 gallons) and a few crabs peppered across our baby tanks! (We aren’t too sure of the exact number because we are a rehabilitation center for sick crabs, so we always have a fluctuation of “patients”)
Also, does that blue crab at 7:15 only have one eye?!
Yes! That is one of our original beach crabs, Capi. She has molted many times but has not regenerated her eye.
How do you keep the glass between your tank and pools clear. There is condinsation between the glass of mine.
So I just wanted to know if it would stress them out to much is O did they
We don't really change much in our tanks once we get them set up. We will add new foraging items though.
And also make sure to keep the heat/humidity sealed in, naturally.
Great questions! We are actually filming a video on how we created each topper and how we attach them to the tanks today! Stay tuned! 😊
@@CrabCentralStation Awesome! I look forward to it!
What are you using for your bars at the tops of your tanks to hang things from?
Those are curtain tension rods that I completely wrapped in natural jute rope. Any exposed metal will rust in the humidity of the tank, so make sure it is covered really well. We love them!
You have 11 inches of substrate? I have way less. Do they really dig all the way down 11 inches?
Amazing video!! This now becomes my dream room lol! Also wondering which kind of glue are you using to attach the cholla on the tank for the climbing wall? I am thinking about doing the same to my new tank! Appreciate in advance :)
We used 100% silicone with no mold inhibitors!
@@CrabCentralStation Thank you for your reply! Will definitely try that! :)
hi so i have a question. so today i got my fifth hermit crab and it is soo much more tiny than the others. will anything happen and should i worry
Hermit crabs of all sizes can live together happily. In fact, sometimes having very different sizes can help because then they aren't all fighting for the same size shells.
How do you attach everything to the wall? :( I’m dire need of help.
We use 100% silicone (but crabs can not be in the tank while using it). We also use tension rods (from walmart) and wrap them in jute twine. That allows you to hang things vertically.
Do you have one remote for all the lights or do you need to turn them off and on every morning or night? Seems like a lot to do manually 😂
We have all of our lights on automatic timers. Makes it super easy and consistent for the crabs.
Well, it seems some of my breeder questions were answered by this and other videos lol thanks :)
Absolutely! We also did a chat on the Podcast, Animals At Home where we talked a lot about breeding.
@@CrabCentralStation Awesome! I will have to check it out ^_^
This is really cool
Thank you!!! We are certainly enjoying it. Our crabs are loving all the extra room to explore.
@@CrabCentralStation you are welcome.
Thanks for all the amazing ideas! looking forward to adopting soon... in the corner tank is the palm tree real or fake and where did it come from?
It is fake. We got it from Hobby Lobby 😁
@@CrabCentralStation Thank you! I set up my new tank and they absolutely love it. I'll keep the old one around just in case.
My brother has been interested in owning hermit crabs, I was wondering if there's a minimum sized wheel that he'll need for his hermit crabs?
It really depends on the size of the hermit crab. I would get the same size wheel as you have hermit crab. So, small crab = small wheel, medium crab= medium wheel, ect.
