Actually they adore each other. Are not comparable except for the timing and the amount of $ they raised for the lgbt+ community. Cyndi is a rock singer Madonna is dance. Only one can still pack an arena 3 nights in a row. Has the sales record. Madonna is not a great singer. But her first records are pre auto tune and iconic. Why can’t they both be Queens. No one ever pits men against each other. It’s so lame and uncreative. And Cyndi, a stellar vocalist was shit in this performance. Btw. They both have moments. Not to mention Debby Harry, Pat Benetar, Ann Wilson, Heart, Belinda Carlisle and a shit ton more....

For reference, I'm 43. She's So Unusual was the first full album I really loved and this was my favorite song. I had no idea what it really meant at the time, I thought it was about dancing. Now knowing what it really meant, I wonder how many adults were shocked at the time seeing me start singing it.

I love 💛 ❤ this TINY WOMAN, But SHE IS a POWERFUL And an Extremely TALENTED TINY Female!
How i WISH you would've done the studio version INSTEAD. 😢 😢
She writes A LOT of her OWN Music and Songs, And she plays something like 5 Or 6 different instruments. She has WON Numerous Awards since the 80's But she first started off doing Cover songs with a Band since way back in the 70's.
I'd love to go see her Production of KINKY BOOTS (which Also got her a Tony Award) But i've got NO idea if that Show is still on Tour (??).
She had a REAL SAD Troubled past But THANK GOD, she overcame that NASTY "Hurdle" and stuck to her Music because her Career TOOK OFF when "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" became a Top 10 Hit IN MANY different countries (NOT just here in the U.S.A., which by the way, she was born in NewYork).

I was just a kid when this came out, and I thought it was a fun, catchy song, but I didn't understand the lyrics. I just thought they sounded strange and I was like, "What does that mean, anyway? 'She bop, we bop and you bop'..." It just seemed nonsensical. It was only years later that I read about the actual meaning of the song, and I couldn't stop laughing - just think of all of us little girls out there, dancing around to this song, no idea what it really meant. Cyndi was and is unique, and I love her for writing this song.

One female singer, who in my opinion, doesn't get enough recognition is Nina Hagen. She is from what was once East Germany then moved to the West. She is a bit eccentric in dress and singing style, but she has done everything from punk to disco to opera to 1940s covers. She now does Christian rock. She has a great sense of humor while she sings. My favorite song by her is "Born in Xixax". Her only American hit is "New York, New York".

  • @agarthul

bop = masturbation lol, that's why this song has meaning still today! Things about "Vibrations", etc.. It's basically about sexuality and freedom, which after the sexual revolution, was still taboo for women to talk about masturbation, and still is, or at the very least, it is only permissible as fetishization, instead of about self gratification, and sexual liberation. Cyndi putting this on mainstream, for a personal interest instead of say, for the gratification of men, talking about self pleasure, was pretty dang radical. It reminds me of Janelle Monae's Pynk.
"I can't stop messing with the danger zone, they say I better stop or I'll go blind" "She bop he bop and we bop
, I bop you bop and they bop....Ohh ohh she do she bop."

To really understand her voice, listen to I Drove All Night, or one of her most iconic hits, Time After Time. But this song was really progressive for its time: 1983, and about how women (and everyone) masturbates and it shouldn't be seen as a shameful thing. This was a radical message at the time (this was during the era kd president Reagan, an extremely conservative time, especially when women and laws about women's bodies were concerned). So here was this quirky pop star singing about how "I bop, you bop, they bop..." With the underlying message that everyone should just calm down and stop shaming people for it.
I was 9 when this came out and didn't know it was about masturbation until probably ten years later. i laughed so hard when I realized what I had been singing along to in elementary school!

Incredible voice, but with all the other great voices and bands coming out at the time, she had to be different to be noticed.
All Through the Night is her best vocal hit.

Perhaps you've not chosen the best song to define Cyndi Lauper. And live... Please forget it and try with "Time after time" or "I drove at night", studio versions with good sound quality. You'll get a better idea of Cyndi's music.
