Fun fact, Cyndi Lauper played a psychic in the TV show "Bones". I saw Cyndi in concert a few years ago. She was the back up for one of Cher's final concerts. Great show by both.
Well, that's the point with music. Songs are meant to be taken different ways by different people. Artists specifically, probably since music began, give double meaning to their words, so the songs can be enjoyed by lots of people.
"Do I wanna go out with a lion's roar? Or do I wanna go south and get me some more?" "They say if I don't stop, I'll go blind." "They say I'd better get a chaperone, because I can't stop messin' with the danger zone. But I won't worry, and I won't fret. Aint no law against it yet." Yup. Preach it, Cyndi. ✊️😉
This song made the "Filthy 15", a list of the supposed worst of the worst songs that were corrupting children in the mid 1980s. The list was created by a group called the PMRC who wielded a lot of influence in Congress because Al Gore's wife, Tipper, was it's founder and leader. In response to the attacks from the PMRC and widely publicized Congressional hearings the RIAA agreed to put "Parental Advisory" stickers on certain albums. The albums with those stickers became "forbidden fruit" and the kids wanted to hear them more than ever.
Man!! i'm a 90s kid (born in the late 80s) I remember my mom and aunt talking about this though.... i think last year OR in 2019/20 was the anniversary of the PMRC "Filthy 15" songs ..... the list is totally take compared to some songs that came out in the later 90s & 00s!! She Bop is a great song, music video is entertaining, fun to watch. I Drove All Night & Money Changes Everything needs a reaction. I love Money Changes Everything music video, because is a live performance & so great.
I totally understand what Lex is getting at with suggesting Cyndi as a Tim Burton character, especially after that video. Definitely has that vibe. "They said I can't go out without a chaperone. Because I can't stop messing with the Danger Zone. Well I won't worry and I won't fret; ain't no law against it yet."
Totally forgot this song existed until I saw it again here. This song always sounded like the theme or anthem for a female villain in something like *The Kingsman* series of movies.
Cyndi being interviewed in "Later with Bob Costas" (the final NBC talk show; it aired after the Tonight Show and Late Night, from 2.00-2.30 am), in 1986 BOB (enthusiastic): I love that song, it's so all-inclusive. The entire premise of the video went over their heads until I told them what it was about ! I was really surprised that MTV didn't Censor this video.
They did. It was one of the first videos they banned, but I recall seeing it before they decided to ban it for content in 84. I have a random memory of seeing that video and What's Love Got To Do With It back to back. Those were the only two I can remember, but I recall sitting there watching MTV one morn. First video MTV banned was to Van Halen's cover of "Pretty Woman" because they had a transvestite tied to a pole who was being groped by two little people and at the end, the woman reveals she was a dude all along with a knowing smirk.

The song is about "masturbation" without saying the word "masturbation". It was included on the Parents Music Resource Center's "Filthy Fifteen" list, due to its sexual lyrics; this led to the creation of the Parental Advisory sticker. Lauper told The Howard Stern Show she recorded the vocals while she was nude. She has stated that finding a copy of the gay men's magazine Blueboy lying around in the recording studio provided the impetus for writing "She Bop". "She bops, he bops, and we bop. I bop, and you bop, and they bop" in other words, everyone plays with themselves, or at least most people, even if they claim they don't.
Poppy new wave classic and artist. Lauper was huge in the '80s and early '90s. Very quirky lady and singer. She had the typical new wave punk look and hair style, clothes as well. Both this song and Sheena Easton's Sugar Walls were released in 1984.
Cyndi Lauper actually has a PHENOMENAL voice. You can't tell by some of her pop songs but she can really sing.
You're right and that's why she's in the RNR Hall of Fame.
I saw her live, maybe 10 years ago now, and she was amazing! I honestly didn’t expect her to be that good. I was very impressed.
True colors has always been one of my favorites
Yeah, as I got older and listened to her actual voice beyond all the noise that accompanied it, she really can sing.
I didn't realize how good her voice was, until I saw the behind the scenes clips for We Are The World.
She's been on The Howard Stern Show several times, singing her hits acoustically. When the music is stripped down you can really hear how fantastic her voice actually is. What a set of pipes!
That performance of True Colors in Howard's old WXRK studio is excellent; just her, keyboardist, and violinist.
Look at how she stood out on "We Are The World" up against the cream of the crop.
