When the movie was released, Nathan Lane was virtually unknown outside of Broadway, and was still in the closet. Officially. Because it could still kill a career to be an openly gay actor.
During a promotional appearance on Oprah, Lane and Williams appeared together. Oprah asked a “gotcha” question of Lane that would have forced the issue - but Williams, in his inimitable way, interrupted and pulled the conversation away from the topic. To save Lane from having to answer.
After Williams died, Lane told that story as a tribute to what a great person he had been, and how Lane was eternally grateful to him.

As a gay man getting kicked out of the USMC under DADT at the time this film came out, I marvel at how different life is now versus then. For all of us. Better, too. Watching two straight men who had NO idea what the film, its themes, its historical rooting in "La Cage aux Folles", etc. would be about, was quite revelatory to me. And very entertaining. Thanks! And thank goodness!❤ Semper Fidelis.

I liked you comment on how Robin should have been in the other role. It's very true, and the role Lane plays. They are essentially playing the wrong roles. But it worked, and for this reason, this is one of my all-time favorite films. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" did the same thing with its two leads.

Robin Williams was originally cast to play Albert, but he'd just come off Mrs. Doubtfire and didn't want to play another role where he spent a good part of the movie in drag. Steve Martin was to play Armand. I think Mr. Martin willing handed the Armand role to Mr. Williams.

Happy Pride Month plus 1 and/or Fourth of July minus 3. I do hope before Pride Month 2025 you get to watch and react to Red, White & Royal Blue.
The Birdcage is based on a 1978 French movie based on a 1973 play, La Cage aux Folles. (The movie with English subtitles is also great.) Both play and movie are real pioneering since they were done so soon after the 1969 Stonewall riots which started the gay movement. Other media was still "pearl-clutching" over just the open existence of homosexual characters themselves. There was the 1970 landmark Boys In The Band, the first time a bunch of gay men were seen interacting with each other but frankly a very bitchy way. (Even just hearing about the movie kept me in the closet for a few more years as I thought therefore ALL gays were like that and I would never want to meet such people.)
    ----
Most viewers get upset with Val's asking his father to pretend to be straight. His gf is 17 so I guess her parents would need to approve the marriage, hence they can't find out about Val's parents. But also, this is absolutely vital so that we have the story.
    ----
There is a clip from years ago when Trump was hanging out with Rudy Giuliani, who was in full drag, and Trump pretended to be hitting on Rudy.
