    South Beach, Miami, Florida. I went with a bunch of str8 girls to see this movie. Afterward, they asked me if I thought the movie pushed too many stereotypes? I said, "Let's see, two men in a relationship for over 20 years, they own a successful business, have a nice home and a, mostly. well adjusted son. I wish it was a stereotype."

    The opening shot is actually 3 scenes perfectly and seamlessly edited together. The first is from a helicopter over the water, then as we come on shore, there are cameras on moving cranes in Miami Beach outside a hotel made to look like The Birdcage, then as we step into the actual club, that is a Hollywood set.

    I saw this in the theater when it came out, and the audience was roaring with laughter. I just love Albert; the over reactions are funny but somehow endearing! Every actor crushes it, in fact! There's some dated references that feel a bit uncomfortable, but this movie has such a good heart that it ultimately doesn't matter!!

      @JohnSolo513 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@mozyflicks Funny thing is, Albert wasn't playing a part or lying.. Albert was expressing his genuine beliefs to Keeley and wasn't offended with him.. Think about it.. He's a more feminine man, he embraces the role of staying at home and taking of Robin (his man), and he believes in family values and giving Val and healthy grounded upbringing (except, just one tiny little difference 🤣).. That's why Val feels like he never came from a broken home, Robin is a gay but still masculine father to him, and Albert is a gay but vulnerable submissive "woman" to Robin's character and is completely okay with that.. He likes that Robin's character is more masculine and takes the "man" role in the relationship and treats him with respect and care and you can just tell by their chemistry.. Val got a mostly conservative traditional upbringing with his parents and he finally accepts that in the end after his birth mother shows up late and puts them all in a tough situation with the senator.. Bottomline, this movie promotes ACCEPTANCE, regardless of what side of the political aisle you are on and where you come from.. This movie is full of characters who grow and learn to accept each other no matter what, and nobody belittles or gets preachy, like most modern movies tend to do with this particular subject.. THIS movie handles all this stuff brilliantly and what's more? IT'S HILARIOUS!!.. As a straight man, I adore this movie and am proud to say it's one of my favorites 🙂 they don't make em like THIS anymore 😏

    Interesting fact: Except for "We Are Family", all of the songs that were sung by the actors were written by Stephen Sondheim. He wrote one original song that was used when Nathan Lane is doing the scene with the bubble gum chewing dancer. The rest are songs that were cut from various Stephen Sondheim musicals.

    This movie is an English version of the 1978 La Cage aux Folles (literally cage of madwomen). With English subtitles, worth watching.
    And this movie made only 9 years after Stonewall, a riot that started the gay movement try to simply to be allowed to be open and gather in a social setting - which in America was still effectively illegal. When gay bars were routinely raided - we were known to not put up any resistance so easier for the police than dealing with violent criminals - on the premise that with the sodomy laws still in effect, it could be claimed the patrons were gathering to commit illegal acts. The charges would be reduced to things like "disturbing the peace" but the names were placed in the local newspaper. The forced outing often lead to losing families, jobs, and/or taking one's life.

      Everything changed on June 27, 1969 when the patrons of the Stonewall had had enough and fought back against the police with a riot that lasted 3 days. I was nearly 17 at the time; the first Pride parades in 1970 were protest marches as the LGBT community became more visible, and with visibility, more changes took place to where we are today.

    • @johnnehrich9601
      @johnnehrich9601 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wfoster-graham6363 Yes, I was 19. I think the story was on a back page of the NY Times and I don't remember reading about it at the time. However, by the fall, my college had a "Gay Liberation Front" (every radical group was a "liberation front). For years the NY Times prohibited its reporters from using the word "gay" but instead had to use the more medically-sounding word "homosexual." Time magazine shocked the nation with Leonard Matlovich on the cover and "I am a homosexual."
      I grew up not knowing of any real gay man. I'd heard of rumors and then learn so-and-so was married, and I didn't understand the concept of a "beard." I used to think gay men as being strange so any guy on the bus or street corner who was acting weird, I pegged as gay - a bit of circular reasoning.
      Eventually I read a newspaper article about a mass murder of young men (NOT John Gacy) who therefore was definitely homosexual. The article had a stamp-sized photo of him, and I cut it out and carried it in my wallet for several years as an example of a "normal" looking handsome masculine man.

As to the Birdcage, I absolutely love Albert so much, he's such a sweetheart. And obviously Agador is a star. It is easy to put all the blame on Val for the attempt to change and thus hide his parents' gayness. However, the entire premise of the movie depends on this. Also, his gf deserves some of the blame. After all, if she had been willing to marry him even without her parents approval, this would have been a non-issue. It is similar to the groundbreaking Guess Who's Coming To Dinner decades earlier, despite the completely different tone of that movie. In this earlier movie, it was also a need to have the parents accept the interracial relationship, also used as the plot device to explore the issue. In that case, I had forgotten that Sydney Poitier's parents also objected to the marriage, giving twice as much screen time to the perceived problem of the relationship.
    Personally, I have known couples in similar situations of parents objecting (no matter why), and the couple telling them they will go ahead anyway but the parents will miss relationships with grandchildren. Threats like that eventually thaw the problem.
    PS - thanks for the great review.
