I've thought for a while that the "Jews in Space" bit at the tail end of History of the World Part I (which was the last movie he did before this film, though there was a good 6-year gap between the two) may have been part of the inspiration for this film.
While he would go on to fund his retirement with Honey I Shrunk the whatnot.... Spaceballs is the Rick Moranis movie. He freakin killed it. The doll scene was great, "when will then be now?" was great, grabbing that walkie talkie and throwing it away was great... he was in the zone.

This is a reference to a 1955 Looney Tunes short titled "One Froggy Evening", where a guy finds a frog that randomly bursts into a song and dance number, but whenever the guy tries to show it to someone else the frog just sits there and doesn't do anything.

'Are they gonna catch up to where they're at right now?' *happens* 'Are they gonna...?' This movie is one of several that literally STARTED those tropes. I find it amazing that the tropes have such a life in and of themselves nowadays that people know the tropes BEFORE they see the movies those tropes came from. Testament to the comedy ideas that Mel and others came up with and how well they've stood up.
11:25 A little Trivia: You said the scene looked like the scene in the Wizard of Oz? Well, that's the exact same stage as the Wizard of Oz scene was filmed back in 1938 at MGM. This Spaceballs scene was also the last movie to be shot on that stage shortly before the stage was torn down.
Funny that you mentioned it being a “comfort food” movie, it was one of the DVDs we had for my wife during labor. Along with Willow and The Princess Bride.
As a 90's kid (very early 90's), that is a very nice selection of movies. Might have to locate princess bride on Blu ray and have a marathon with my gf.
For me growin up the trilogy was Princess Bride, Spaceballs and Inner Space🤷♀️ But I always said the later was a guilty pleasure amongst the other 2 classics 🤷♀️😘 Somehow I missed Willow till my mid/late teens. The others I knew inside out and backwards by the time I was 9. Of the 4: Willow was 88 with the rest being 87.😉 Maybe I was too busy watching the other 3 to notice when Willow came out. IDK🤷♀️😘I but when I finally did see it I'm a parade recognized it as a classic as well, along with Labyrinth. Which I found around the same time. I was a little late to those two parties🤣
The backstory on Spaceballs is amazing - Mel Brooks met with George Lucas to get his blessing before making the movie. The only condition he had was that they couldn't make Spaceballs merchandise for real, as that got into licensing and there would be lawsuits. So, if you want a Spaceballs shirt, you'll have to go to Esty or something. Also, ILM made the models so Spaceballs One is an eleven foot long model. That's why it looks so good.
This is my favorite Mel Brooks movie. He’s most known for Blazing Saddles and You g Frankenstein, but Spaceballs and Robin Hood Men in Tights are his best selling movies. What really blew me away, when I learned about it, was that Rick Moranis was the one who recommended John Candy to play Barf. Because they had worked together on SCTV in Canada, in the late ‘70’s. Rest In Peace John Candy.
SCTV is a gem. Chevy Chase said it was one of the biggest influences for SNL. It had an amazing cast too, Rick Moranis, John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'hara, Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin, Martin Short and Harold Ramis. I watched reruns in the 90's as a Canadian kid, and didn't get all the references but it was still a masterpiece.
Dude, Spaceballs is not only a great parody but also a goldmine of hilarity. The ludicrous speed scene and the Spaceballs VHS scene are my favorite scenes in the movie
5:52 The whole "Surrounded by Assholes" bit is one of my favorites in the whole movie. 12:04 When Brooks approached Lucas and ILM about this movie, Lucas added a stipulation that they couldn't sell any merchandise. So that's why they put so much of it into the movie. 16:43 Fun Fact: Lone Starr could actually be Dark Helmet's former roommate. If his father had at least two siblings, one of whom had at least one son, that could make Lone Starr his 'father's brother's nephew's cousin'.
ever notice one guy doesn't stand up in that 'surrounded by assholes' part? It the guy sitting in the lower left. That's the same seat the guy that went over Dark Helmet's helmet was sitting in.
You could also be your own Father's Brother's Nephew. Since your father's brother is your uncle, and you are his nephew (or niece). That would also suggest that all of that is just a really complicated way of saying "cousin" ("cousin's former roommate").
@@VeritasMiles father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate. So yeah, Dark Helmet is likely the former roommate of one of Lone Star's cousins....if it weren't for the fact Lone Star at this moment, and likely Dark Helmet as well, had absolutely no clue of Lone Star's lineage.
One of my favorite Easter eggs in this movie is the fact that Lucas wouldn't let Brooks dress Lonestar as Han Solo, so instead he dresses him as Indiana Jones 👏
Spaceballs is the best kind of movie. Pure fun with no low points or bad characters. You just sit there in awe as talented artist comedians bombard you with constant fresh and varied humor. The best movie ever.
Pizza the Hut was voiced by the late Don Deluis. The guy who was doing his own sound effects is the comedian Micheal Winslow who also played in Police Academy. The actor who said "we aint found shit" was played by Tim Russ, the same actor who played Tuvoc in Star Trek Voyager.
This will forever be my favourite comedy movie. So glad people are watching it, and first time reactions for this movie are the best..... I honestly can't get enough of this movie and I've been watching it any chance I got since I was a child and it came out. But even as funny as the movie is....... These reactions make it even better, which shouldn't be possible!
As someone who has only seen SW4&5 and a huge Mel Brooks fan, this is way up there amongst my favorites. The self-aware spoof-ness of it all and the many, many movie references makes it chefs kiss of comedy
If I remember my random Spaceballs trivia correctly, that scene near the end where they all jump into the escape pods and they're launched out was actually unused footage from Star Wars. Obviously, not the bit with the Spaceballs cast running around, but the special effect bits. Oh and the special effects on Pizza the Hut were very real and hot. If I remember right the actor actual got burns from it.
Not surprised this movie won the Patreon poll, it's the perfect kind of film for your reaction style. Now that you've also watched Ghostbusters, you should consider Little Shop of Horrors (1986) to complete the "trilogy" of renouned classics with Rick Moranis. However, please prioritise the director's cut over the theatrical release of Little Shop; they have wildly different endings and the director's cut is 100 times better.

As someone who has seen this literally hundreds of times in the 35 years it's been out, it's very entertaining and satisfying to see someone watch it for the first time ❤
The ship in the beginning is a clear play on the long shots of the Star Destroyers. Only Brooks is a genius at making things more absurd for humor, and ILM was absolutely incredible at making massive models. The original USS Enterprise-D model was over 18ft, if I remember right.
Fun Fact, movies like Space Balls, Airplane, Naked Gun, Police Academy, Hot Shots!, etc. are categorized as "Dead Pan" movies. Or "Dead Pan Humor", usually characterised by doing silly/dumb things, while treating it seriously. I absolutely love those types of movies, and am very sad that the "genre" faded out in time.
The sound effects guy is Michael Winslow. He was in the Police Academy movies also. At least the first one anyway. He's a unique kind of impressionist.
The sound effects guy is Michael Winslow. He is world famous for his sound effects, the amount of stuff he can do with his voice is insane. He was one of the main actors in the Police Academy film series.
@6:32 the guy making the sounds is Michael Winslow, he’s well known for all the different sounds and voices he can make. He’s got a hilarious stand up you two should check out
The man at the jammed radar screen is Michael Winslow, who is known as the voice of 10,000 sound effects! Among his best work is in the Police Acedemy series of movies, where he does many different hilarious voices and effects.
It's really subtle and easy to miss, but the radar scene when the camera is coming in close you can see Col. Sanders standing next to Dark Helmet notices it's going to hit them and his eyes go wide, he makes a face like "Oh shit" and backs away out of the sbot. That scene and the "Keep firing assholes!" scene are the two best in the film.
I've watched quite a few reactions to this movie and the two of you got almost all of the references to older movies in this. The guy making noises with his mouth is Michael Winslow and in Police Academy he played a police recruit that could make almost any noise imaginable. In Spaceball city the twins chewing gum was a reference to the Doublemint Twins gum commercials from the 80s.
18:32 What you failed to notice is the millennium falcon is in that shot showing the diner and "parking lot." It's in the lower right side underneath the screen of you guys.

During the scene, where the beaming goes wrong, you see the "beaming engineer" with a strange looking hat. That is part of a scotish traditional clothing - to go for "Beam me up, Scotie". As you said, in every scene there is a ton of jokes and references. You can watch the movie over and over again and it never gets boring.
I'm glad you two had such a wonderful time watching this; I've seen it dozens of times and it never ceases to be funny, welcome to SPACEBALLS: The Fan Club. =)

@6:50 They didn't just get the actor for that scene. The sound effects guy is Michael Winslow - same dude who did that stuff in the Police Academy movies. He`s a comedian with a talent for sound effects. And, yes it`s Joan Rivers!
Good reaction, guys. This is, along with Young Frankenstein, my favorite Mel Brooks film ^^. I was amazed by scenes like the one at 9:22 - a genius - and I laughed at the one at the beginning that shows how absurdly long the spaceship was, the scene with the combs in the desert, the one that references Alien 1979 and the appearances of both Dark helmet and yogurt. Hugs.

Thats Michael Winslow from the Police Academy movies, whose known for making sound effects.
I hoped someone would have pointed that out. Damn its hard being old 🤣
That's true, Michal was so funny in all his movies.
@@uwestaub116 he was even on americas got talent lol doing the sound effects
@@lillyvanpug Ain’t that the truth?!? I’m watching these react videos, SMH and sighing. “Babies”. 😂
Yeah after Christmas is done maybe they should watch Police Academy 1 through 7 hearing Michael Winslow with the different sound effects he makes.
Spaceballs is goated. Our favorite movie as kids. The sad thing?? Movies like this will never be made again.
I saw this in theaters as a kid with my family. There weren't many people when we went, my dad laughed so hard at this movie we kept turning around to tell him be quiet 😂
I have loved this ever since
“Thats so stupid” while laughing uncontrollably is how I watch most Mel books movies.
I have a hard time believing that these two haven't seen so many prominent and classic movies.
'Are they gonna catch up to where they're at right now?' *happens* 'Are they gonna...?'
This movie is one of several that literally STARTED those tropes. I find it amazing that the tropes have such a life in and of themselves nowadays that people know the tropes BEFORE they see the movies those tropes came from. Testament to the comedy ideas that Mel and others came up with and how well they've stood up.
12:25
Prop department: giant combes?... thats the sanest request yet...
That's the thing about Mel Brooks's movies - they're funny as hell and dumb at the same time. And I love it! Mel Brooks is a national treasure.
Fun fact: the guy who says "WE AIN'T FOUND SHIT" during the comb the desert scene is Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager.
Funny that you mentioned it being a “comfort food” movie, it was one of the DVDs we had for my wife during labor. Along with Willow and The Princess Bride.
That's too wholesome.
As a 90's kid (very early 90's), that is a very nice selection of movies. Might have to locate princess bride on Blu ray and have a marathon with my gf.
For me growin up the trilogy was Princess Bride, Spaceballs and Inner Space🤷♀️ But I always said the later was a guilty pleasure amongst the other 2 classics 🤷♀️😘
Somehow I missed Willow till my mid/late teens. The others I knew inside out and backwards by the time I was 9.
Of the 4: Willow was 88 with the rest being 87.😉
Maybe I was too busy watching the other 3 to notice when Willow came out. IDK🤷♀️😘I but when I finally did see it I'm a parade recognized it as a classic as well, along with Labyrinth. Which I found around the same time. I was a little late to those two parties🤣
@@reneeg9406 oh my gosh Inner Space! I loved that movie when I was a kid. Going to have to watch it again, thanks for the reminder!
You and your wife have excellent taste. How old is your child now?
The backstory on Spaceballs is amazing - Mel Brooks met with George Lucas to get his blessing before making the movie. The only condition he had was that they couldn't make Spaceballs merchandise for real, as that got into licensing and there would be lawsuits.
So, if you want a Spaceballs shirt, you'll have to go to Esty or something.
Also, ILM made the models so Spaceballs One is an eleven foot long model. That's why it looks so good.
Curses!
ILM did all the effects not just the models
@@kelaEQ2 the escape pods launching from Megamaid is unused footage from Star Wars too.
Ah, but The Werefrog did get Spaceballs: The Face Mask for the pandemic.
George also said he couldn't use the Han Solo constume. So he made Lone Star look like Indiana Jones
Lucas didn't want Lone Star to look like Han so Brooks gave him an Indiana Jones look.
I think Elon Musk is a fan of Brooks
The speed settings menu in the Tesla touch screen mention "ludicrous speed. '
@@largol33t12dont forget Plaid being the quickest and fastest models.
@@LChineze and “Spaceballs the flamethrower”. Elon sold flamethrowers for a gag a few years ago.
"WE AIN'T FOUND SHIT!"
It is meant to be pure entertainment. Don't need to take it too seriously just relax and watch the adventure
*Dom DeLuise
He was also the Don in Robin Hood Men in Tights
The "Comb the desert" bit gets me everytime, and I'm mid 40's 😂
Love the bloody pick at the end😂😂
This will forever be my favourite comedy movie. So glad people are watching it, and first time reactions for this movie are the best..... I honestly can't get enough of this movie and I've been watching it any chance I got since I was a child and it came out. But even as funny as the movie is....... These reactions make it even better, which shouldn't be possible!
Growing up, me and my brother watched this and Monty python holy grail probably 50 times. So funny!
Oh, ouch! I hope he got compensated for his trouble!
It was actual melt cheese and the actor was wearing a suit of resistance heather to keep it melt, if the memory serves me right
The actor that played pizza the hut was dom delouise.
Thank you for the recommendation! We definitely stan for Rick Moranis 😂.
Oof, gonna disagree on the ending. They changed the film ending from the stage play ending for a reason, and that reason is that [rot13] Evpx Zbenavf vf gbb qnza yvxrnoyr gb cynl gur fgntr irefvba bs Frlzbhe. One of those rare moments when I think the focus test group was 100% right, even if they couldn't explain why in film language.
@@NiceDudeMovieNight You should also give THE MUPPET MOVIE a try (the original one that is!) it has the same type of jokes and Mel Brooks is the mad scientist as well!
@@NiceDudeMovieNight
Publishers Clearing House is a scam not helpful to anyone not ever .
As someone who has seen this literally hundreds of times in the 35 years it's been out, it's very entertaining and satisfying to see someone watch it for the first time ❤
6:31 The guy that was doing noises, was also on some Police Academy movies and his name is Michael Winslow, "The Man of 10,000 Sound Effects".
The ship in the beginning is a clear play on the long shots of the Star Destroyers. Only Brooks is a genius at making things more absurd for humor, and ILM was absolutely incredible at making massive models. The original USS Enterprise-D model was over 18ft, if I remember right.
I always thought it was a take on the beginning of ALIEN. When the Nostromo was slowly creeping past the screen.
@@mlc_fab with the movie being more of a parody of star wars, it always reminded me if the intro to a new hope
It actually is a spoof on the beginning of Alien. Even though most of the film spoofs on star wars, it also has jokes on many other sci fi films
@@mlc_fab Are you joking? Have you not seen Star Wars a new hope? LOL
@@madquest8 more times than I can count...lol...but the Nostromo passing by takes freaking forever. lol...I cna see it either way.
Best scene in comedy.
The entire Asshole scene.
You cut the best line though! "I knew it! I'm surrounded by assholes!"
I’ve watched this movie like 30 times in my life and I still love it every damn time.
8:15 Colonel Sandurz - chicken. Dang, Looks like that joke went over my head until now. XD
I love Space Balls. I remember showing it to my little brother and just laughing our asses off! We still quote it. It’s timeless.
Ditto. Deadpan humor is best humor.
The sound effects guy is Michael Winslow. He was in the Police Academy movies also. At least the first one anyway. He's a unique kind of impressionist.
I believe he was the only actor to appear in all 7 Police Academy movies, plus the short lived cartoon.
The sound effects guy is Michael Winslow. He is world famous for his sound effects, the amount of stuff he can do with his voice is insane. He was one of the main actors in the Police Academy film series.
12:35 - AHHHHHHHHH YOU SKIPPED MY FAVORITE LINE:
_"We ain't found _*_shit!"_*
7:05 George Wyners face/expression as the camera “zooms” into Dark Helmets face. Priceless! lol
@6:32 the guy making the sounds is Michael Winslow, he’s well known for all the different sounds and voices he can make. He’s got a hilarious stand up you two should check out
He also was one of the main characters in Police Academy. Doing all that stuff.
Probably the best parody ever made and the jokes still works nearly 35yr later. 😂
Love this movie and Mel Brooks! Blazing Saddles is one of Mel Brooks' best movies- you should definitely put that on your list to watch.
"Maaaaaan, we ain't found shit!" lololol
The man at the jammed radar screen is Michael Winslow, who is known as the voice of 10,000 sound effects! Among his best work is in the Police Acedemy series of movies, where he does many different hilarious voices and effects.
It's really subtle and easy to miss, but the radar scene when the camera is coming in close you can see Col. Sanders standing next to Dark Helmet notices it's going to hit them and his eyes go wide, he makes a face like "Oh shit" and backs away out of the sbot.
That scene and the "Keep firing assholes!" scene are the two best in the film.
It would have been so funny if it was like this
Barf: "The Force?!"
Yogurt: "Shh.. you want to get sued?"
Mel Brooks movies are basically live-action Loony Tunes. The old ones. The really, really old ones. I saw this at the theater when I was a kid.
Yet another case of the “It’s so bad it’s good”
The amount of 4th wall breaks in this movie makes it stupidly funny
"This movie's so stupid I love it."
The best review for this movie I've ever heard!
We're supposed to be getting a sequel called "Spaceballs 2 : The Search For More Money", and we're still waiting on it lol. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I want “Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2” personally…. Lol
9:25 THE BEST 4TH WALL BREAK EVER!!!!!!! WHEN WILL THEN BE NOW…. SOON
I was a kid when this came out. It's a classic. "we aint found shit" was a staple in my comedic childhood growth. You need to binge Mel Brooks movie
Your laugh is completely contagious, both of you. I can recite every word of this movie. I know everything that's coming. And I've seen a ton of reactions to it. But this is probably one of the best reactions I've seen in a long time, like before TH-cam long time😉
I'm glad you enjoyed the 4th wall break with the cassette. Brilliant scene and Rick Moranis is funny as always.
Reference of Scotty in Star Trek, the character who is in charge of teletransportation.
I'm glad you two had such a wonderful time watching this; I've seen it dozens of times and it never ceases to be funny, welcome to SPACEBALLS: The Fan Club. =)
6:50 For those of you that are kind of young to know who Michael Winslow is. He is known as the man of 10,000 sound effects. He also played Jones in the police academy movies. A very funny man and it was great seeing him do his bit in this movie.
Mel brooks got permission from George Lucas under one condition. He wasn't allowed to make actual merchandise. They even worked together a little on it.
Wasn't* mate. Think you had a typo there lol. 😁
And that’s where the merchandising bit comes from
It also helped that George Lucas was a big fan of Mel Brooks himself.
@6:50 They didn't just get the actor for that scene. He did ALL of the sound effects for the movie. @12:34 the scene with the guy showing "We ain't found S***", that's Tim Russ, aka Tuvok, saying that. @18:32 if you had shown the entire outside of the diner, you would see the Millennium Falcon parked there. And yes, that was John Hurt reprising his role from Alien.
Seriously, watching you guys watch this was such a delight. This is a childhood favorite of mine and seeing you guys watch it fresh like this was so fun!
"We ain't found shit!" is possibly the best line and delivery in cinema history.
The man who went "we ain't found shit" is Tim Russ, Lt. Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager
I FREAKING LOVE THIS MOVIE, THESE “JOKES” MIGHT BE STUPID BUT THEY ARE THE BEST TYPE OF JOKES THAT WE DONT NORMALLY GET LIKE EVER! SO FREAKING CLEVER, AND THAT AMAZING FOURTH WALL BREAK WHICH IS BTW THE ABSOLUTE BEST 4TH WALL BREAK!!!!!!!!!!
The sound effects guy is Michael Winslow - same dude who did that stuff in the Police Academy movies. He`s a comedian with a talent for sound effects. And, yes it`s Joan Rivers!
Spaceballs is one of the greatest satires ever lmao.
I've stumbled across now several of your videos and watching ya'll genuine first time reactions is utterly fantastic to partake in.
This whole movie can be summed up with "This is so dumb! *hysterical laughter*"
I'm about to be 42 and was raised by my grandparents. I absolutely love seeing the next generation rediscover the comedy classics.
I LOVE this movie! So glad you guys enjoyed it. My favourite Star Wars parody.
Thanks Zach!
"Hello my baby, hello my darling, hello my ragtime gal." 1920's-1930's song. Done on loonytoons cartoon. With a frog.
Hugs.
1:06 "This ship is too big if I walk the movie will be over"
I watched this movie when I was 12 with two of my best friends. The ship scene alone had us laughing our asses off.
I watched this movie for the first time recently and the alien scene had me crying laughing harder than any other movie lol
I was 10 when I first saw this. It was the funniest thing I had ever seen in my life.
i love this 2 people who can appreciate some comedic gold
Great reaction! My favourite thing about Mel Brooks movies is how often he breaks the 4th wall. Characters are almost always talking or looking out to the audience and cameras and such keep showing up. He wants to make sure you remember you are watching a film. haha
I love your reaction to this classic. Especially that you are saying "that is so stupid" so often but still laugh your asses off about the same things. Hilarious
"Stupid" is easily confused here with "Obvious". The jokes weren't stupid, they were obvious. 🙂
One of my favorite parts of this movie was the jumping through the closing doors and finding out it's the stunt doubles
12:33 What about you guys!?
WE AINT FIND SHIT!!
This and Blazing Saddles are 2 of my favorite movies of all time!. Please do Blazing Saddles next.
We already have 👍🎉
Fun fact: Mel Brooks already wrote draft for the next generation of star wars "the quest for more money" and Disney clearly and strongly denied him to make that movie!
