Bet Rowan Atkinson had the hump. Notice how he shrinks in the background whenever Rik is on. Apparently, Atkinson is jealous of other performers getting bigger laughs then him This was revealed by Tom Baker after his experience of playing Captain Redbeard Rum.

Miranda Richardsons dipiction of QE1 was amazing.
She said she didn't know how to play the part of one of England's smartest and feared monarchs, so she decided to play it as a spoilt brat.

Black Adder is one of, if not the, best ever sitcom.
    - Miranda Richardson was brilliant as Queenie , aka Elizabeth I. She played her as a spoilt, whimsical, six year old girl, who changes her mind from one moment to the next but has the power of life or death over her subjects like Black Adder and Lord Melchett who's played by the wonderful Stephen Fry. She's not related to Black Adder, he's just one of her Lords.
Historically Elizabeth I was known as the virgin queen as she never married and instead played her suitors off against each other. Over the years she had a number of favourites, many of whom ended up either imprisoned or executed when she tired of them. Remember her dad was Henry the VIII who was a psychopath who had six wives and executed two of them and her sister was 'Bloody Mary' who burnt several hundred protestants at the stake, so playing the Game of Thrones was fairly risky in those times.
    - Lord Flashheart was inspired by Flashman in the novels by George MacDonald Frase,r who also wrote screen plays such as the James Bond film Octopussy, The 1970s Three Muskateers films and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Fraser in turn nicked the character from the bully in the classic book 'Tom Brown's School Days'.
The Flashman books are a unique mix of historical fiction set in Victorain times at the height of the British Empire, mixed with adventure and comedy. They're hilarious. Flashman is a cad, a bounder, a womaniser, a coward and a rotter, much like Terry Thomas and one of my all time favourite characters. Well worth a read if you want a laugh, whilst also learning about British colonial history.
    - A florin was two shillings. There were 20 shillings to a pound, so 10,000 florins was £500, which in Elizabethan times was a huge sum.
    - The Captain in episode 3 was Tom Baker, most famous for being the 4th, longest lasting and perhaps best Dr. Who. He also did the voice overs for Little Britain. Sir Francis Drake was played by Simon Jones who played Arthur Dent in the original Radio and TV series of 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'
    - Lady Whiteadder in epsiode 4 was Miriam Margoyles, aka Professor Sprout in Harry Potter. She's also in Series 1 of Blackadder as the Spanish infanta along with Jim broad Bent, aka Professor Slughorn. And did you spot Huge Laurie was one of the drunks as well as Prince Ludwig in the 5th episode?
The Writers were Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. Curtis also wrote films like Four Weddings & a Funeral, Notting Hill and Love Actually. Ben Elton started as a leftwing, alternative stand up comedian in the 80s, but then got more into writing.

Hi. As others have said each of the 4 seasons has a Blackadder (the nickname the Prince in the first season gave to himself when he decided to become a villain), each one a descendant of the previous one (many generations later) and the same with his servant Baldrick. In the first season Blackadder was more the fool and Baldrick the cunning one, but that swapped for the remaining seasons. The first season takes place around the 1400s I think, with the Plantagenet dynasty. The second season in the reign of Elizabeth I (Queenie), the third season in the Georgian era (George III, but he was mentally incapacitated so Parliament appointed his heir, the Prince of Wales, as Regent), and the fourth season takes place on the front during World War I. The first season isn’t bad, it’s just it’s more fun when Blackadder becomes the cunning one as the scripts were better with the introduction of a new co-writer.

Glad you are liking this. In Season 1 the king is Blackadders father and therefore is a prince. But after the kings death his blackadders brother takes takes the throne. After several generations the current queen arrives along with the current blackadder. So they are related but very distantly not mother and son. The season is poor so new scripts sharper writing and funniest lines were introduced and it saved the show. This is set in Elizabethan era, season 3 regency era season 4 world war 1 enjoy😂

I don't think the first season is awful, but it IS very different in tone. It's much more miserable, with the humour coming from Edmund's constant failings and the lack of respect for him. Later seasons focus on his wit and snappy dialogue, with his success or failure being more on luck or the incompetence of his associates. By all means take a look at it after a couple of the later seasons, but I'd seriously hesitate to recommend anyone START with season one.

If you're still wondering when this was set, it was in the late middle ages, during the Tudor period. Specifically, the Elizabathan era. The woman is Queen Elizabeth I. The costumes are very period-specific. She was played by Miranda Richardson, who plays her brilliantly! Elizabeth was actually very intelligent, multi-lingual, and is considered the greatest monarch that England ever had. She never had children.
I don't know what made you think Blackadder was the Queen's son! He certainly wasn't. 🤣
The sets were dingy, for the most part, but the budget was limited. They seemed to spend the set budget on the costumes. But Tudor houses were often dingy and dark. Window glass was very expensive, so few people had windows in their homes, plus, the 16th century in England was colder than it is now, so homes were built with this in mind.
(I love the scene where Baldrick and Percy kiss. The line, "That's an original perfume" is hilarious, delivered perfectly).

    • @alisonhill3941
      @alisonhill3941 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The Tudor period isn't the late middle ages, it's the Early Modern Period. English history draws the line in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth, so arguably even the first series is Early Modern.

Plus if you think the Queens ditzy, wait till you meet Prince George, son of the Mad King George. And yes they were real too lol

Season 1 had it's moments but it was clearly not fully worked out yet, that all changed when they did get the green light for season 2.
From here on, Blackadder shines, the rough diamond it was in season one has now been polished and only will get brighter each episode and season.
And since you are doing all episodes in order, you'll get the finale episode the way we did, the impact that one has is way up there with the likes of the last episode of M*A*S*H*.

    Hi EB,
1 of the great things about Blackadder is all the series where set in different time periods thru history.
some of the characters are played by quite famous people in Britian,
Baldrick is played by Tony Robinson (host a brilliant series called "Timeteam" where a time of archelogists have 3 days to dig a site and put the pieces together of how life was back when the site was in use)
the Queens council is played by Steven Fry, host of QI at trivia quiz show with no rules where the answer YOU thought when right are proven wrong.
Flashheart played brilliantly by Rick Mayall R.I.P. was awesome in The young ones, Bottom, Alan Bastard M.E.P. (member of european parliment) to name a few.
I totally forgot Hugh Laurie (1 of the drinkers with the fake tits is House
Miriam Margoles from Harry Potter is the woman with the 3 crosses who loves the turnip
Although I you know I live in Australia, I was born and raised in Ireland so we got all the British tv shows growing up as well as most of the American shows too.

EB, a florin coin was originally a gold coin worth in todays money about $150-1000 depending on gold content.
Modern florin(in the UK) from Victorian times onwards was worth about 2 shillings(24pence) or after decimalication in the 1970's was worth 10pence in todays money or around 13-15cents in US money.

Hiya Alan, The Writers got about 40 actresses to play Queen Elizabeth 1st, Henry 8th was her Dad and Anne Boleyn was her Mam, Miranda Richardson only went to the auditions once and got the part straight away, I liked the line "I dreamt I was a sausage roll" I hope you laughed at that, we loaned Uncle Michael the VHS tape of Blackadder, when he came down the following day he came into our house, and said "YOU'VE GOT WOMANS LEGS MY LORD! In real life Queen Elizabeth I was actually extremely inteligent - it is one of the reasons she managed to survive to even come to the throne. She is actually one of Englands most loved queens - even at the time. The one thing that Miranda Richardson's portrayal of the queen that is true is that the real queen could be capricious on occasion. One of the reasons you really did not want to offend her or go against her wishes. I am not sure where you get the idea that Blackadder is the son of the queen - he wasn't, he was a high ranking noble.

Glad you enjoyed Blackadder 2 , the first series had some great names in the cast , but making Edmund the clever schemer and Baldrick the idiot worked so much better . The change to a fast paced studio based farce made these classic . The series is based on several generations of the characters over the ages , Medieval , Elizabethan , Georgian and ending with the Great war . And each generation he goes down slightly in social position .
A great idea to react to the entire series , notable performances bottom Miranda Richardson as the semi psychotic Elizabeth I with her senile nurse and Stephen Fry as the toady Melchip. The unsanitary lives of the vast majority is pretty obvious , there are lots of old castles and houses still about from that time and it's pretty easy to imagine life in those days . It's not something historical dramas tend to cover but a great source for comedy .

So Elizabeth 1 (about 1600)...Yes, series 3 is the regency (1780 ish) then world war 1. There are three 'extra' shows to fill in some of the gaps and you need to finish the series with 'Back and Forth' which was made to show in London's Millennium Dome exhibition. The overarching story of the Blackadder family is that they are always aspiring, but never making it quite to the top (in fact, like most British aristocracy, they lose status through each generation). Percy represents the 'also rans' and Baldrick represents the unwashed masses. In series 2 lets give credit for Miriam Margolyes as the aunt with a cross to bear (always brilliant) and Tom Baker as the sea captain (also the most eccentric and fourth incarnation of) Doctor Who! Many of the smaller roles are also going to be reincarnated in later episodes.

Blackadder 2-4 were so much better than the 1st series, but 2 is my favourite. I think it's just a sublime cast, and the guests were all brilliant, even if they did peak way too soon with Rik Mayal's chaotic Lord Flashheart. Britain has a very long tradition of cross-dressing in comedy, btw.
It was also a very traditional British sitcom; farcical, ridiculous and surreal. Unexpected coming from a bunch of 'alternative' comedians.
Queen Elizabeth fancies Edmund Blackadder, simple as that. She's not his mum. He's a noble at her court, and I always read him as being a few years older than her.

Personally, I think Blackadder is Rowan Atkinson's finest comedy character. He did loads of interesting stuff in the 80's with many major British comedians, and of course Mr Bean is an international franchise, but IMHO Mr Bean started out well but grew so exaggerated that now it makes me feel like I'm laughing at somebody with Downs Syndrome or similar condition. In contrast, Blackadder has plenty of belly laughs, but also genuine pathos and tenderness.
