I made this recipe for laundry soap and I’m only now running out of it six years later. And I still have the supplies from what I made it the first time to do two more batches. It works really well and is great for my sensitive skin.

Fun little story. My mom use to work at an apartment complex and one day she heard one of the maintenance guys freaking out because she had removed a built in microwave and left in on the brand new carpet over the weekend. Come Monday he realized that was a big no, no!! The microwave had leaked a bunch off oil from the over range grease filter. He knew he was in big trouble, they would need to replace the carpet again!! My mom told him not to say anything yet, she went home grabbed some zote and was able to completely remove the stain!! My moms coworker was so happy he picked her up and kissed her l the cheek!! Lol 😂. ZOTE IS AMAZING!!!!!
Lovely story - I'm in Canada and I don't think I can get Zote but will search for it - I'm very sensitive to smells - do you remember what Zote smells like - do you know if it has a strong scent - we do have Borax here but I find it abit strong in smell - thank you
Thank You Thank You for your added step of adding dry ingredients over the heat..... I added the step of heating until the liquid is no longer cloudy or milky looking but almost translucent, My Soap no longer separates!! Hallelujah!!!! I had made soap preciously that would separate SOOOOO I went back and reheated that soap til it was no longer cloudy and looked translucent and NOW even that soap DOES NOT SEPARATE!!!!! Hurrah!!! Hallelujah!!!!
mine keeps separating 😭. Are you saying that I need to keep it on the heat longer? I had it on the heat for at least 15 minutes before putting it in the pail. The next day it had separated. So I put it back on the heat for at least 30 minutes and its still separating. I dont know how to fix this. I know I can still use it even if it is separated but I would like to learn to do it the right way 😏
@@askthehealerofthebroken4516 vinegar is used to set-in color in fabrics. I use it on my embroidery threads before I hand embroider clothes. I also soak red clothes in it to keep the color from fading.
Just be careful if you have a front loader the vinegar can break down the seal on your front loader. If you,have a traditional washer though have at it. Thats what I used until I had a front loader. I just took a gallon of vinegar and put some oils in it and left it that way
This is AMAZING!!! I made the 1:1:1 in 3 gallons it is AMAZING . Works it works wonderful I use HE washer. It's concentrated, easy to make, lasts a long time, it doesn't separate ,and the best of all not only the fresh smell but the color it brings out in all our clothes is beautiful bright vibrant color! Even in White clothes no more bleach! Never buying store detergent. Thank you for the recipe !

I guess I need to re-do mine. I used 1:1:1 in HALF a gallon only (i didn't want it to be too runny hah), and over night it separated and the top part is all hard that I had to break (to discover the liquid was under). Ooops
Did yours become thick like Greek yogurt? Mine is very thick I did 1.1.1. In 3 gallons of water and it became very thick and seems like it kinda solidified in the mason jars
I just made my first batch of laundry soap using this recipe and it is already getting thick and creamy. I cannot wait to start using it. I just want to let everyone know that I found a paint stirrer for a five gallon bucket that attaches to an electric drill. I bought it at my local building supply store for $7. It is working great.
Thank you for the awesome tip of warming everything on the stove top...I think this definitely helped me! Was my first time making and my 5 gallon bucket is sitting on the deck to be stirred a few times throughout the day. I used my husband's drill and paint stirrer attachment :0) I also added a container of Purex Crystals in cherry and ginger scent. Can't wait to bottle it up and give it a go!
Nice job. This is the best demo. I did make one that calls for 1/2 cups EACH of original Dawn, washing soda and borax. Add 4 cups super hot water and STIR to mix in a 1/2 gallon jar. It makes up quick and dissolved perfectly and quickly. Uses 1 tablespoon as it is super concentrated. This is a great one if you don’t have time to put your recipe together and need to get a batch made quickly, but I cant wait to try yours. I love how thick it is. I have been making this using your recipe ☺️ I taught a friend of mine today. We made 10 Gal. Saves us a lot of money doing this and it cleaned very well. My husband and I bought a paint mixer attachment to a drill. Worked
Did you do 2-3 gallons hot water. Add two bars shredded bars of soap. Let it slow cook. Then add the 2 cups borax and 2 cups arm & hammer laundry washing soda. Let it cook down. Then put in a 5 gallon bucket. Add 1 gallon of hot water and mix. Then mix a couple times throughout the day. Then next day add 1 gallon of hot water and mix. And mix a couple times that day. Did you add another gallon of hot water the next day and mix more or did you stop adding hot water?

My grandmother made our soap from fried meat grease, lye, and water. Using the homemade soap, we didn't have acne problems, skin irritations, rashes none of those associated with over the counter soap, and detergents. My grandmas Homemade liquid laundry Soap(we still use today-smells like clothes hung outside on the clothesline) (Front or top load Machine-best value) Ingredients: 4 Cups - hot tap water 1 Fels-Naptha soap bar* 1 -1/2 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda** 1 Cup Borax Directions: -Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted. -Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken. -Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel) ( I use old laundry detergent containers I get from the laundromat, I ask people for their jugs) -Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. FYI - 'Sodium bicarbonate' IS Baking Soda ------- and 'Sodium carbonate decahydrate' is washing soda **** your last comments are contradicting hence pointed out !

October Knites It’s very dilute. Each load receives 1/4 the weight of a dime’s worth of soap. Waaay too little soap to wash a load of laundry. She doesn’t know what she’s doing.
October Knites As my comment following this one says, it’s far too dilute to be considered useful. Looked at another way, the soap she’s washing a load with equals half the weight of a paper clip.
Made this over the weekend. Your whisk idea made me think of using a metal paint stirrer attachment with our drill which worked wonderfully!! The formula was so thick you definitely NEED something to mix it around. The hardest part was getting it from the bucket to the (we used large glass pickle) jars. A large scoop of some sort would have been ideal. Fabulous money saver and it seems to work great!👍👍👍

Wow, thank you so much for the video!! I have several half gallon mason jars around my house but those are for the milk from my dairy goats. I've seen so many video's on this type of soap, but never in the half gallon jars for cleaner storage. What a great idea! I'm going to pick up some more jars, pick up the bars, but everything else I have on hand!
I made this soap and wow was it a pleasure to make I got ten gallons of soap and it works so well I am a country girl and my husband and we work in the yard which we grow our own vegetables and herbs and I am always dirty with soil compost and a host of other things so, thank you for helping us save a lot of money this soap should last a year for us it's so concentrated all I use is a half of cup or less and our clothes comes out do clean and smells so good thank you sgsin

It's funny to see comments of people talking about the soap suds. That isn't what gets our clothes clean. We are just accustomed to seeing so many suds so much foam that when something doesn't work the same way, we assume it's not working. What I'm saying I guess is that more suds does NOT equal a better washing detergent.
T J. No! They are asking about suds because suds wreck a washing machine! That's why shop bought washing powder does not lather! People are just making sure that by using this soap based recipe that it doesn't cause any long term damage to their machine! They don't WANT suds...they are checking to make sure there are NO excessive suds!

Abby Lowe Soap was all they had, so that’s what they washed with. Salt per se wouldn’t do anything. Soda ash was extracted from ashes and enabled soap to be made from animal fats or plant oils. I don’t know when using lye for saponification became the norm however. Washing soda and borax were used to enable soap to be used in hard water. The DIY folks are proudly recreating 1600’s technology. Maybe more ancient than that.
Pretty awesome and simple video. I've been making my own bath & laundry soap for about 7 years now. I started after I had an accident that really spiraled my immune system out of control and I noticed that no matter what store bought soap I used, even baby soap, it irritated my skin. I use zote or the felsnaptha if I dont have my own left over bars from unsold products from my personal line. It just depends who is on sale. One day one brand will be $.98 and the other $2.12 and then they'll flip the prices....so I will go with the cheaper ones and buy them out on those. Anyways...your video is more directed than the verbal know how I got. Thank you for your time and I look forward to the next!
so loving your recipe, i have tryed 2 others before this one and they where chunky and seperated ..needless to say i have found my life long recipe its so creamy and with me keeping it concentrated it works great on my kids cloths,, thank you so much your a life saver i was about to give up on home making detergent ..
The first time I tried making detergent they were chunky and separated so I experimented a little and found this method to work great for me. So glad you found a recipe that works for you, and the recipe was from me, lol!! In my house I never give up, I just adjust it and try again...eventually I get it right, lol. Have a beautiful evening

I went on line to find Zote soap, Iwas astonished to find the price differences... some bars as much as $8 plus Walmart was the best around $1 plus! Pays to look around .
Omgosh...I've been searching for a homemade liquid laundry detergent recipe for a while now...this one is great! We are on septic and a plumber told us to only use liquid. I saw many recipes and yours was the easiest in measurements and ingredients for my mini lockdown projects. I will be making this recipe soon after I finish my just made from other channel which is also very close to this. I made a very small batch i.e. 1/8 cup borax.1/8 cup washing soda, 62gms soap (i used the sunlight soap bar) & double the water so its already mixed up abt 1.25 gallons, will make this when i run out. new to this will see how i go Thanks again!
@stacey gewin Yes, you can turn baking soda into washing soda by baking it. However this video isn't talking about that. The recipe for making laundry detergent requires washing soda, and she kept saying baking soda. (I get it. It was an accident and we much more frequently use baking soda than washing soda in our daily lives.) I just didn't want anyone to get confused thinking they were the same thing, because they're not. 😀

I used an immersion blender and even though it doesn't go to bottom of bucket it seemed to work really good. I would stop after a little while stir with my stir stick then use immersion blender again. Alot like when making cold process bar soap.

Equal amounts 1 bar 1 cup of Washing soda 1 cup of Borax 1 gallon of water. So when doing a single batch use 1/2 a gallon of water to melt the soap. Once melted add the other half gallon. Mix dry ingredients after the soap has melted. Pour entire mixture into bucket add the rest of the water and mix til cooled. Store it however you want.

🙂👍 Finally! I made this basic recipe several years ago, but I forgot the proper quantities of ingredients. I had previously tried making it using the most common recipes on the internet. But, like you, I preferred _NOT_ to have to deal with the inconvenience of storing 5, 7, or 10 gallons of extremely weak, diluted detergent in my laundry room. I also didn't want to have to add 4 to 6(or more) 4oz capfuls of detergent to each large load of laundry. I prefer a recipe that contains more active ingredients and less water. There's a reason why discount laundry detergents cost only 1/3 the price of the top brands like Tide. It's because the cheaper detergents contain much more water and much less detergent. It turns out that your recipe is almost identical to the one I was making, except that I used Dove bar soap instead of Fels Naptha or Zote. Some recipes give the option of substituting Ivory bar soap for Fels Naptha, but I don't like my clothes smelling like Ivory soap. I'd read that Fels Naptha has a warning label stating not to get it on your skin, which deterred me from using it, although that may be an unjustified overreaction. 👉 Important note: _Don't_ try adding Oxy Clean into your liquid detergent bottles. Oxy Clean is activated by water, which causes the oxygen and hydrogen in it's solution to change to gas, which causes the mixture to greatly expand, forcing the cap off the bottle, and continuously leaking detergent all over the place! It's ok to use Oxy Clean with your detergent, but _only_ add it to the washing machine while you're doing laundry.
I love my recipe...Dove would smell awesome, but I make my own bar soap so it is rare that I buy soap other than zote. So glad you found me on here and took the time to watch

HighlanderNorth1 No. Active ingredient is sodium percarbonate, an adduct of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide, which releases hydrogen peroxide in water. H2O2 decomposes to oxygen and water. That said, you are correct about not dissolving it prematurely in water.

@@tanookis_nookie2056 I know I laughed at that too! The color of your laundry soap has nothing to do with being a guy or not. Our soap is purple, my husband uses it. Fels Naptha is good for poison ivy, oak & sumac. When I had bad poison, my dr told me to wash my body with it, and it dried up the poison immediately. I just wouldn't wash with it daily or put it on sensitive areas because it dries the skin. It is a laundry bar however, and that is what it is used for. As for oxy. I had some Arm & Hammer detergent that had oxyclean in it, but I would not put actual oxyclean in my own soap mixture. Im not a chemist, but I don't think it would end well. 😳😷 I think I will stick to my woolite. Hehe

I have heard, that when you make Washing Soda, you put baking soda in the oven at a very very high temperature for quite a while. What you get is washing soda.

Could you give me suggestions please. I made some a few years ago, it was ok but more on the runny side. I made some a few weeks ago and added laundry scented beads to it. It has separated like crazy and VERY runny
So glad you enjoyed. The secret to not having separation is keeping it in the bucket several day and mixing it really good a few times a day. You really need to use an electrical mixer and mix it real good so the solutions "marry" with each other. Thank you for watching. Have a beautiful evening
leigh ryder you can also use vegetable glycerin to stop the water and soap separating instead of mixing it constantly over several days, it eliminates a lot of unnecessary work. It's inexpensive and you only need a few tablespoons

Hi, got here after viewing some other videos about alternative clothes washing technologies and felt like making a suggestion. Borax is a type of mild acid (boric acid), and washing soda is an alkaline. When you add the borax, you’re actually neutralizing the washing soda (leaving salt and carbon dioxide as byproducts)and reducing it’s effectiveness. That’s where all the bubbles are coming from when you mix them together with the soap water. I think you’ll get much better results using just washing soda with your soap, and probably about half the amount you are currently using in relation to soap.

Here in Australia, we have a soap called sunlight soap. I have never seen zote soap in our supermarkets. Sunlight is a pure soap, so could I use that instead of the zote soap?

Zote does have a strong smell but not offensive. It is a mosquito repellent too.

I don’t use fabric softener I use white vinegar and it softens and rinses my clothes clean.
Does it fade the color in your clothes?

I just want to let everyone know that I found a paint stirrer for a five gallon bucket that attaches to an electric drill. I bought it at my local building supply store for $7. It is working great.

Thank you for the awesome tip of warming everything on the stove top...I think this definitely helped me! Was my first time making and my 5 gallon bucket is sitting on the deck to be stirred a few times throughout the day. I used my husband's drill and paint stirrer attachment :0) I also added a container of Purex Crystals in cherry and ginger scent. Can't wait to bottle it up and give it a go!

Nice job. This is the best demo. I did make one that calls for 1/2 cups EACH of original Dawn, washing soda and borax. Add 4 cups super hot water and STIR to mix in a 1/2 gallon jar. It makes up quick and dissolved perfectly and quickly. Uses 1 tablespoon as it is super concentrated. This is a great one if you don’t have time to put your recipe together and need to get a batch made quickly, but I cant wait to try yours. I love how thick it is. Thanks for all the time you took to out his together. 😉
This is way too dilute. Only 0.02 oz of soap per load. A paper clip weighs twice that!

Did you do 2-3 gallons hot water. Add two bars shredded bars of soap. Let it slow cook. Then add the 2 cups borax and 2 cups arm & hammer laundry washing soda. Let it cook down. Then put in a 5 gallon bucket. Add 1 gallon of hot water and mix. Then mix a couple times throughout the day. Then next day add 1 gallon of hot water and mix. And mix a couple times that day. Did you add another gallon of hot water the next day and mix more or did you stop adding hot water?

What were our great great grandparents and grands using before the chemical detergent? My grandmother made our soap from fried meat grease, lye, and water. Using the homemade soap, we didn't have acne problems, skin irritations, rashes none of those associated with over the counter soap, and detergents.
My grandmas Homemade liquid laundry Soap(we still use today-smells like clothes hung outside on the clothesline)
(Front or top load Machine-best value)
Ingredients:
4 Cups - hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar*
1 -1/2 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda**
1 Cup Borax
Directions:
-Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.
-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax.
Stir well until all powder is dissolved.
Fill bucket to top with more hot water.
Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.
-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water.
Shake before each use. (will gel)
( I use old laundry detergent containers I get from the laundromat, I ask people for their jugs)
-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil, orange citrus,lemon.
-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.
-Top Load Machine- 1 Cup per load (Approx. 100 loads)
-Front Load Machines- 1 Cup per load (Approx. 450-500 loads)
*****use your own judgement my grandma just eyeballed the amount****
*Visit the Fels-Naptha website to find a store in your area that carries the product.
**Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" - in some stores or may be purchased online here (at Meijer.com).
Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium bicarbonate.

As my comment following this one says, it’s far too dilute to be considered useful. Looked at another way, the soap she’s washing a load with equals half the weight of a paper clip.
Made this over the weekend. Your whisk idea made me think of using a metal paint stirrer attachment with our drill which worked wonderfully!! The formula was so thick you definitely NEED something to mix it around. The hardest part was getting it from the bucket to the (we used large glass pickle) jars. A large scoop of some sort would have been ideal. Fabulous money saver and it seems to work great!👍👍👍

Wow, thank you so much for the video!! I have several half gallon mason jars around my house but those are for the milk from my dairy goats. I've seen so many video's on this type of soap, but never in the half gallon jars for cleaner storage. What a great idea! I made this soap and wow was it a pleasure to make I got ten gallons of soap and it works so well I am a country girl and my husband and we work in the yard which we grow our own vegetables and herbs and I am always dirty with soil compost and a host of other things so, thank you for helping us save a lot of money this soap should last a year for us it's so concentrated all I use is a half of cup or less and our clothes comes out do clean and smells so good thank you sgsin

It's funny to see comments of people talking about the soap suds. That isn't what gets our clothes clean. We are just accustomed to seeing so many suds so much foam that when something doesn't work the same way, we assume it's not working. What I'm saying I guess is that more suds does NOT equal a better washing detergent.

People are just making sure that by using this soap based recipe that it doesn't cause any long term damage to their machine! They don't WANT suds...they are checking to make sure there are NO excessive suds!

Soap was all they had, so that’s what they washed with. Salt per se wouldn’t do anything. Soda ash was extracted from ashes and enabled soap to be made from animal fats or plant oils. I don’t know when using lye for saponification became the norm however. Washing soda and borax were used to enable soap to be used in hard water. The DIY folks are proudly recreating 1600’s technology. Maybe more ancient than that.

Pretty awesome and simple video. I've been making my own bath & laundry soap for about 7 years now. I started after I had an accident that really spiraled my immune system out of control and I noticed that no matter what store bought soap I used, even baby soap, it irritated my skin. I use zote or the felsnaptha if I dont have my own left over bars from unsold products from my personal line. It just depends who is on sale. One day one brand will be $.98 and the other $2.12 and then they'll flip the prices....so I will go with the cheaper ones and buy them out on those. Anyways...your video is more directed than the verbal know how I got. Thank you for your time and I look forward to the next!

so loving your recipe, i have tryed 2 others before this one and they where chunky and seperated ..needless to say i have found my life long recipe its so creamy and with me keeping it concentrated it works great on my kids cloths,, thank you so much your a life saver i was about to give up on home making detergent ..
The first time I tried making detergent they were chunky and separated so I experimented a little and found this method to work great for me. I saw many recipes and yours was the easiest in measurements and ingredients for my mini lockdown projects. I will be making this recipe soon after I finish my just made from other channel which is also very close to this. I made a very small batch i.e. 1/8 cup borax.1/8 cup washing soda, 62gms soap (i used the sunlight soap bar) & double the water so its already mixed up abt 1.25 gallons, will make this when i run out. new to this will see how i go Thanks again!

The recipe for making laundry detergent requires washing soda, and she kept saying baking soda. (I get it. Baking soda is just partially neutralized washing soda. It doesn’t soften water. Washing soda does. Baking soda is just a filler.

I used an immersion blender and even though it doesn't go to bottom of bucket it seemed to work really good. I would stop after a little while stir with my stir stick then use immersion blender again. Alot like when making cold process bar soap.

Equal amounts
1 bar
1 cup of Washing soda
1 cup of Borax
1 gallon of water.
So when doing a single batch use 1/2 a gallon of water to melt the soap. Once melted add the other half gallon. Mix dry ingredients after the soap has melted. Pour entire mixture into bucket add the rest of the water and mix til cooled. Store it however you want.

🙂👍 Finally! I made this basic recipe several years ago, but I forgot the proper quantities of ingredients. I had previously tried making it using the most common recipes on the internet. But, like you, I preferred _NOT_ to have to deal with the inconvenience of storing 5, 7, or 10 gallons of extremely weak, diluted detergent in my laundry room. I also didn't want to have to add 4 to 6(or more) 4oz capfuls of detergent to each large load of laundry.
I prefer a recipe that contains more active ingredients and less water. There's a reason why discount laundry detergents cost only 1/3 the price of the top brands like Tide. It's because the cheaper detergents contain much more water and much less detergent.
It turns out that your recipe is almost identical to the one I was making, except that I used Dove bar soap instead of Fels Naptha or Zote. Some recipes give the option of substituting Ivory bar soap for Fels Naptha, but I don't like my clothes smelling like Ivory soap. I'd read that Fels Naptha has a warning label stating not to get it on your skin, which deterred me from using it, although that may be an unjustified overreaction.
👉 Important note: _Don't_ try adding Oxy Clean into your liquid detergent bottles. Oxy Clean is activated by water, which causes the oxygen and hydrogen in it's solution to change to gas, which causes the mixture to greatly expand, forcing the cap off the bottle, and continuously leaking detergent all over the place! It's ok to use Oxy Clean with your detergent, but _only_ add it to the washing machine while you're doing laundry.
I love my recipe...Dove would smell awesome, but I make my own bar soap so it is rare that I buy soap other than zote. So glad you found me on here and took the time to watch

No. Active ingredient is sodium percarbonate, an adduct of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide, which releases hydrogen peroxide in water. H2O2 decomposes to oxygen and water.
That said, you are correct about not dissolving it prematurely in water.

Fels Naptha is good for poison ivy, oak & sumac. When I had bad poison, my dr told me to wash my body with it, and it dried up the poison immediately. I just wouldn't wash with it daily or put it on sensitive areas because it dries the skin. It is a laundry bar however, and that is what it is used for.
As for oxy. I had some Arm & Hammer detergent that had oxyclean in it, but I would not put actual oxyclean in my own soap mixture. Im not a chemist, but I don't think it would end well.

I have heard, that when you make Washing Soda, you put baking soda in the oven at a very very high temperature for quite a while. What you get is washing soda.

So glad you enjoyed. The secret to not having separation is keeping it in the bucket several day and mixing it really good a few times a day. You really need to use an electrical mixer and mix it real good so the solutions "marry" with each other. Thank you for watching. Have a beautiful evening
leigh ryder you can also use vegetable glycerin to stop the water and soap separating instead of mixing it constantly over several days, it eliminates a lot of unnecessary work. It's inexpensive and you only need a few tablespoons

Hi, got here after viewing some other videos about alternative clothes washing technologies and felt like making a suggestion. Borax is a type of mild acid (boric acid), and washing soda is an alkaline. When you add the borax, you’re actually neutralizing the washing soda (leaving salt and carbon dioxide as byproducts)and reducing it’s effectiveness. That’s where all the bubbles are coming from when you mix them together with the soap water. I think you’ll get much better results using just washing soda with your soap, and probably about half the amount you are currently using in relation to soap.

You can use oxy clean in the mix, just put it in with the washing soda and borax, then put it in the hot melted down soap.

Here in Australia, we have a soap called sunlight soap. I have never seen zote soap in our supermarkets. Sunlight is a pure soap, so could I use that instead of the zote soap?
