    I've been making this soap for 2-3 years now thanx to this video. Hubby HATES me using this soap. He says his clothes just do not come clean with it. He insists that I buy the commercial brand. So ... I collected a few empty containers of popular commercial brand laundry soaps and I simply fill them up with my homemade laundry soap as needed. I keep my gallon jugs in the closet out of sight (underneath bags of shop towels). I keep two empty jugs of different commercial soap brands to rotate so it looks like I'm buying a new jug occasionally. Over the past two years Hubby has exclaimed many times how much *cleaner* his clothes are with the commercial brand and he's glad I stopped using "the other stuff." LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no way I can ever tell him that I'm using the homemade laundry soap! :-D
    > > > > > > > UPDATE 2021: < < < < < < <
    Although I still make this soap, to save time I do not make the liquid version. I just grate the soap and run it through an old coffee grinder to make it into a powder (so it can readily dissolve in cold water). I add some Borax to it to keep it fluffy in storage ziploc baggie. I store in a gallon sized baggie which lasts me about three months. So I currently spend about 50cents per month on laundry detergent (If you include the Borax with the Zote or FelsNaptha bars.
    ALSO, Hubby has long since discovered that we were using the homemade soap, and he's totally fine with it since he realizes that it does clean his dirty farm clothes. He is the one who always makes sure that we have extra bars of soap on hand to make more laundry soap.
    IF we had discovered along the way that my homemade soap did not perform well, we would have probably gone back to the over-priced store brands with all the useless additives. :-)

    I made this soap a couple of months ago. When my wife found out what I was doing SHE told me in no uncertain terms to never use any of that "Crap" soap on any of her clothing, our sheets or towels, that her skin was way to sensitive and she would break out in HIVES if I did. Well I do most of the laundry with exception of her Dainties. I've used this "Crap" soap on everything ever since. SHE remarks all the time on how clean and how nice everything smells. I'll never tell, Thanks Becky for saving me several hundred a year.
    Thanks; Dale

      I love Zote and Fels Naphtha My grand son had strawberry stains on his clothes. I rubbed Fels Naptha on the stains, Then I grated zote in the wash with my regular laundry soap and per-washed in cold water. Next I washed the clothing in hot water... colors came out bright and white came out white. No stain in babies onesy and even a white tea towel came out with out the stain I thought was permanent. It all smells wonderful too! I'm going to try two of these recipes. One powdered and the other liquid. A few years back I tried a liquid receipe...and it didn't work out that well. ps If I'm out of laundry soap I use a squirt or two of Dawn dish soap.

    In making this laundry soap, I spilled some on my floors. My floors since moving in have not looked clean even with bleach. I could see the ring where the bucket was from the spill. This is a great cleaning product. I have cleaned my wall with it as well. Becky, this is great stuff. Thank you so much for sharing.

    This is without a doubt the best laundry soap I've ever used! This is well worth the effort to make. I would recommend using a full sized box grater instead of the little grater that Becky uses. I shredded the bar in about 90 seconds. This soap is even cleaning the soap scum in the washing machine.

    I made this soap last night with my daughter and what a fun project it was! Now we have a TON of soap that will probably last us for six months! Only thing, we live in the high desert in California and it gets pretty cold at night. I let my 5 gallon bucket sit in the garage overnight and this morning it was like a thick gel. I diluted it with more warm/hot water and lots of stirring! I'm really excited to see how it's going to turn out when we wash our clothes. Thanks Becky!!!

  • @JanColdwater
    @JanColdwater 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Btw, you can speed up the process by melting the Zote in a large pot on the stove with med/low heat, then add the Borax and then dilute with hot tap in your large bucket. Ready to use the next day!

    I absolutely love your channels. you are my favorite TH-camr. I have learned so much from you and have tried every video that I have ever watched. I made this soap powder and was afraid it wasn't going to clean my clothes because it didn't give off any suds. I must say I was an advocate Tide and Gain user. this is the cleanest that my clothes have ever been. I must say there has been a little fading but I do design most of my own clothes so it's not that much of a big deal because I'm consistently changing with the seasons. thank you so much Becky keep up the great work and I'll continue to follow your channels.

    I have made the Zote detergent for several months! It is awesome!! I took to heart what you said about the borax and washing soda being brighteners and that they fade your clothes. Also, I have very delicate skin. I'm allergic to practically every detergent in the world So, I did not add them. My clothes are super soft and come out beautiful! No fabric softener needed!!! I do use foil balls in my dryer to cut static, but that's it! LOVE IT!! I will say that I I fill my 'old' fabric softener bottle with detergent and don't add the extra water. I went out of town for a week. My husband bought the giant container of powdered Tide (I am VERY allergic!) and a big bottle of Downy. I just set that crap out of the way!! Also, he told me that something is wrong with my machine because his clothes didn't get clean!! I make a 'stain or heavy duty' detergent using 3 bars of Fels Naptha and 3 gallons of water. I use this when my husband gets into really greasy nasty stuff. It is very thick, like mechanics hand cleaner. I gave some to a friend, she added sugar and her husband uses it as hand cleaner out in his garage! His hands have never looked better! THANK YOU!!!!!

    • @joannekeryger7909
      @joannekeryger7909 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ...Hi. What are foil balls, for clothes static? ...Do you mix the heavy duty stain detergent like the laundry soap and let it sit a bit to thicken? ...lastly, the mechanics hand cleaner.. can you ask your friend how much sugar she added to how much heavy duty detergent? Thank you

    • @cheryllynnchavez
      @cheryllynnchavez 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jo Anne Keryger The aluminum foil cuts stops the static. The clothes are soft with out added fabric softener but they will have static cling.

    Dearest Becky, first, the videos are fantastic. Please keep them coming. I made your laundry soap out of desperation for two reasons 1. Cost and 2. Harshness. My "dainties" were itchy and leaving bumps - and Persil Sensitive is quite a price if you have to do everything in it! SO, I made up your wonderful recipe. In NZ we have "Sunlight" soap, which was a good substitute, but the smell was so so. My borax always refused to dissolve, no matter what I did, I ended up with clumps. I ordered "Zote" from Amazon. 6 bars with some books ( I'm a quilter & sewer) ...
    What lovely soap! I grate mine in my electric multi grater (so naughty, but it cleans it and the dishwasher...); I now dissolve the borax in hot water & mix with an electric stick mixer, the same kind you use for soap. I then add the soap flakes to hot water as you do, add the borax mix, then hand mix for a minute, then the electric stick mixer until all mixed. I then leave for 24 hours. Mix again for 1-2 mins leave for 24 hours - and voilà - no gritty lumps of borax at the bottom. Perfect pink potion for perfect pretty laundry. I also do our clinic laundry - and guess what? Staff and patients have actually commented. Thank you Becky, my knickers thank you too.
    I would like to know too if anyone has tried Douglas Huston's Recipe - and what is the difference with using Borax and Washing Soda? ( Douglas is a few posts down)
    I also vote for Dale as Real Man of 2015, any man who knows the difference in washing soaps, powders etc and to wash delicates separately - let alone take the time to MAKE liquid, has my everlasting vote. Also his parents. If he cooks as well, I have a daughter for his son or brother, I can provide a dowry.

    I'm making this recipe today! As we speak, a 5-gallon jug is sitting on my back porch with the ingredients dissolving slowly (covered up due to excessive dive-bombing Asian lady beetles that STILL haven't left!) The cool thing is that I've had a box of borax my mother-in-law gave me (free ingredient!) sitting in the laundry room for over a year. I didn't know what to do with it because the one time I tried it in the wash, it residue'd all my clothes.

    I'm in Canada also. What I use is Sunlight laundry bar. You can usually find it in the laundry aisle at the grocery store. I use both bars for Beckys recipe because the Zote soap that is sold in the US is a large bar and Sunlight is smaller. I love Beckys recipe because there is no cooking on the stove and it turns out better than the others I have tried. Hope it helps :)

      I been using zote soap for dish soap for 3 years now and because it doesn’t suds up I just buy cheap dish soap at Sam’s club for 5.00 and I mix it with my soap adding water it lasts me over a year. Just slice off about 1/4 of that bar mix it in hot water I boil my water on the stove using a old pot you can get one at the thrift store and just use it for making your soap. with a gallon of water( I use a empty milk container to measure with ). It’s going to gel so when it does mix it again with another 4 gallons. I have a large empty dish soap container and I put a couple of ounces in it then I fill it up to the top with Beckys soap. If you want more suds just add more of the cheap soap. I have even used degreaser in my larger mix . You can even put in a little bit of bleach especially cause of COVID. The cheap soap I use is an industrial dish soap and it comes in a gallon container. Even if you didn’t make any soap this soap calls for 2 ounces per 8 GALLONS OF water so just by it’s self it will last a really long time. I hope I helped you out especially with everything being so expensive. If your not a Sam’s Club member you can also buy it at Costco it will just be a different brand . Good luck and stay safe

    not sure if anyone addressed this. but those bubbles are from the soap. bubbles come from the sopanification process of lye and fat, without it, it's not soap. so some bubbles are not bad, and this is a great way to stretch soap and detergent! can't wait to give this a try!

  • @reikilynx653

    Becky, This is such an easy recipe compared to many other channels! I first made the change from store bought softeners to just adding a cup of white vinegar during winter, when static is at it's worst, and a half cup during summer season when it's not as bad. White vinegar whitens beautifully, better than bleach any day, and static is gone just as well. 2 for 1! I skip the Borax as it's just a whitener. When people say "I don't have time to make my own soap", I say soaking soap shavings is not time consuming. Would you watch paint dry? Add up what you pay for store bought soap and softener in a year and you may just change your mind! The 'earth's' bonus is why I made changes in the first place. Another bonus I never thought of, but was bowled over by is, my washer is always super clean and lime free now! They sure have the general public hoodwinked with 'commercial' shenanigans don't they?!

    Hint, I have arthritis. Rather than make a mess to clean, or have aching, tired hands and arms shredding soap to make the liquid soap. I usually place the soap whole in an empty oversized plastic container with hot water and place the lid on. After a few months sitting on the shelf, it's soft and almost a liquid, then pour into the pot with water before adding the powders and other ingredients.. No aching hands.

    I really latched on to two things in this video 1) borax is a brightener and can fade your clothes 2) If you want really gentle soap, leave out the borax. I have an allergy to a lot of laundry soap! I'm on my third five gallon bucket. Although I have to admit that I have probably given away at least 5 gallons to my friends! Two of my friends now make their own soap. Two of them have bought a gallon of soap after trying what I gave them.
    I grate the soap, put it into a five gallon bucket, add one gallon of boiling water. Stir until soap is melted. Add a gallon of hot tap water, stir. Repeat until I have added a total of 5 gallons of water. Let sit 24 hours. Stir well. Put some into an old laundry soap container to place by my washing machine. Refill as needed.
    LOVE THIS SOAP! It leaves everything nice and soft! I don't need to use fabric softener!

    If you cannot find the Arm & Hammer Super Washing Powder, you can make it your self out of the Arm & Hammer 2 pound box of Baking Soda. Start by turn oven on to 400 degrees next place a 9 x 15 inch cookie sheet on counter and and spread the soda evenly place in oven for 90 minutes stir carefully then bake another 30 minutes. Let cool and use as directed. The heating process releases the CO and you have the Super Washing powder left. Also, if it is not strong enough add equal amounts of Clorux 2 as a booster.

    Great video, Becky. I love your technique, but I have a couple of suggestions that you, or your viewers, may want to try sometime. You can try adding a couple of cups of washing soda to the mix at the same time you add the borax. It will really boost the strength of the soap even more; like, unbelievably more. Also, you can add about 30 drops of essential oil to add fragrance if you like. Last but not least, about a 1/4 - 1/2 cup of zap odor eliminator (Lowes carries it) will keep your laundry smelling fresh for days on end. It's an industrial strength odor remover, but is still gentle enough to use in this type of application.

    Thank you for showing that all you need are 2 simple ingredients to make very good soap. I have looked at a lot of soap recipes and they call for this and that and the other thing. All you need is Zote ( or equivalent) and borax period. Washing soda actually kind of cancels out the borax so why add both? All I use is 1 bar of Zote and a cup or 2 of borax for a 5 gallon bucket. It gels very nice and you only need about a 1/4 cup per load, if that. You can add scent like lavender to your sheetc etc. when you wash them if that trips your trigger but don't put it in your soap. I see Becky that you dilute it for bartering which is cool...some folks don't like it jello like lol. But for home use....just leave it concentrated and use less. Good simple vid thank you.

    • @Mariljusadna

    Nice video. I like to check occasionally and see the ideas of others. I also make my own laundry soap, but I also add Laundry Soda, and a bar of Ivory Soap. The Ivory is great for cleaning sweat stains and the like.
    I grate 1/2 Bar Zote Soap, 1 full Bar of Ivory, and near boil it in a large pot of water; stirring occasionally, until it's all liquid.
    I then pour the near boiling soapy water into a 5 Gal bucket and add 1 cup Borax and 1 cup Laundry Soda.
    I always let mine sit over night, and the next morning I stir the Gel like soap with a pint mixer inserted into a drill.
    I have never left it for two days, but I'll try that with the next batch.
    I had people save their empty laundry soap bottles and pour mine into those.

    I have been watching your channel for over 3 years. I still have the 1 acre plot that has changed so much. You have a lot of value in your channel. I actually have had to do "How to make soap" lessons for my family and extended family. I added to the receipe since this is not an exact science I just keep the 1:2 ratio. I add a scoop of oxi-clean same amount as washing soda found by the laundry stuff and Menard's actually stocks everything you need together. Then I add "Foca" laundry flackes has no phospates to give my soap a blue color and and great scent without using essential oils 2-3 bucks at Walmart look on bottom shelf. As a last note without Becky I would not have chicken's and now Goats. My biggest suggestion add one homestead habit at a time especially animals. Canning and such as you can afford supplies to save money later. We added chickens last year, this spring it was the goats, we are deciding on sheep or pigs next spring. My husbands boss begs for to buy our extra eggs so do our daughters teachers. Garden is going to be 2x the size as last year. I guess I am suggesting do not take too much on at once. You really want to do it all but a bit of planning will incorporate it into your life easier, mostly because there is a lot to learn. Also do not forget to talk to your local 4-H, FFA, University extention office for help and questions! Oh yeah spell check was not working.

      It's ideal for HE washers because it doesn't suds. It gets a little sudsy when u make it but that's the only time you'll see suds with this stuff. Of course, always check with your washing machine manufacturer but I'd use it if I had one.
