If you do one of these again, Valhallan Blizzard has become my go-to for snow on bases. If you feather it out with a wet brush it's really easy to get nice melty edges. It's best used for patches of snow rather than a full "Hoth" snow coverage, so applying it sparingly is key
I was reading this comment while watching and I was hearing the quiet music and I thought I was hearing things, I paint warhammer so the crazy is pretty normal for me
A cool trick I figured out while working on my chaos knights, if u use typhus corrosion with oil FX paints and other grimes like that you can simulate the build up of old grease/hydraulic fluid that large old machines can get.
Oh this was a nice little drop you don't always drop as many videos as you should but it's always nice to catch them! Nice to catch someone from the Isles too most of these videos seem to be from across the pond where they drown on a bit meaning no disrespect of course! .....Oooohhh Slobber effect! That'd be cool for a Blood Bowl mini or two
Another trick you can do with “Blood for the blood god” is by getting a small scoop on your brush then using a airbrush aimed at the brush to splatter it on the model. If you don’t have an airbrush I read it should also work by blowing air through a straw. I also heard flicking it off a stiff brush or a toothbrush also works but the airbrush method is my favourite. It’s so fast and fun to do, just don’t go overboard if you try this. P.S. great video, thanks! Saving it for later reference!
Cool video. What I'm really missing is an overview in the end. With a quick summary of your findings, because it seemed like the usefulness varied a lot
I could add to this list crackle paints (gw: mordant earth, or art stores one). Not only desert or crackled bases, but sometimes easy chipping effect. Also, chipping mediums.
Luke from Geek Gaming Senic used to make some technical paint alternatives way back in the Luke APS video days creating a nice DIY Nurgles Rot, Blood for the Blood God, Nikhilik Oxide, Typhus Corrosion, sadly he removed the videos when he started to promote his new brand. I would cherish videos about creating your own alternatives using different mediums, pigments, varnishes, modeling paste (with and without sand) to make in bulk. Just a nice diy tutorial series to help us out to save some money, similar to the diy sculpt a mold videos and such.
Dirty down rust is a game changer. I painted the terrain from the killteam Moroch box with it to look like a completely forgotten about base that has been abounded for hundreds of years.
I've never touched any kind of effect paint (they didn't exist when I was deep in the mini painting hobby before a long hiatus), this was a great summary of different stuff, I feel like I need a lot of new pots now...
just mess about with typhus corrosion ,try adding the ryza rust on before it drys and try adding a purple ink wash onto the rust also,if you want thick rust i use for example an old sprue put on some pva glue and where you want thick rust ,then add some sand then once it dries add the typhus and ryza.
You can do a lot of these effects if you have Contrast/Speedpaint/Xpress Colors in the appropiate colors. For water effects/puddles/gloss effect, I just use Glazing Medium, which is good to have anyways. Really sticks out if you use it after a matt varnish in jjust a few spots! And every hobbyist already has some sort of stringy glue. With that, you pretty much have all you need for effects without having to buy a ton of technical paints, since all of this serves double duty!
A few tips: UHU will yellow a lot over time, so be aware of that. The web effects, go with much less air pressure. Its actually just crackle paint medium (crackle paint as in painting a wall in a room) I personally would recommend the GSTW Frost effect never had that effect. sometimes it helps to work the stuff in layers as well, put in a ground layer of it and once that si dried add a another layer, the second layer then has always worked for me crystallizing
Late to this party, but I have a rust option I dont see many people use. Vallejo weathering effects Diesel stains. It does a really good job, when lightly applied, of creating that mildly rusted area. Hard to describe, but if youve ever had a cheap knife or metal tool get that slightly mottled rust effect kinda all over at a surface level.
"Instagram-ready"... Just imagine taking photos of a group of Khorne Berzerkers, applying a filter and telling them that now they are "instagram-ready". The carnage would be legendary.
@@jherazobwould be kind of funny for a moment, but I would still prefer the term "display ready", because painting models for Instagram would render an army and the whole paintjob totally worthless in my view.
Nihilakh Oxyde (or also other washes to make those effects) can also be applied more heavily and then smear away the access using a finger. It gives then the effect that where you hit with the finger you still have a very faint "oxide" effect.
I used to keep tarantulas (300 at one time) and always loved the prolific web builders! Unfortunately they also tend to be the most aggressive! Check out Pterinochilus murinus for examples of their creations.
Great video! I’m loving pigments now, but when I started using them they were getting everywhere! I can’t wait to try Dirty Down products! I’d love to hear what you think of the liquid pigments paints.
Thanks for the comparison and demo. I used some (old) Vallejo Rust Effect, just drybrushed and spotted it on some metal. Gave a great weathered metal effect. Give it a shot :-)
uhu,, covered with spiders web, then a watered down acid.. a great effect. I'd love to see some more combinations that can occur with these effects, please do try some out on your channel
I highly recommend using Tamiya Clear red for blood effects. Combined with UHU glue. And yes the Spider Serum is a nightmare to use inside. Also, one thing they don't tell you is that it has a shelf life. I bought some and after some time, it completely evaporated within an unopened bottle. Dirty Down also makes a Verdigris effect that is pretty sweet. I have never used the Vallejo frost and I hope that gets fixed because it looks like a sweet idea. Thanks for the video.
Blood for the Blood God is great. I remember the first time I used it, I had a friend who worked as a Crime Scene Investigator for the Sheriff's Department, and he was like it looked so realistic that for a split second after touching it he considered going to Hazmat like he would if it was blood in real life.
wish I saw this last month, I kit bashed a forest Dragon for a friend I even got some fake moss for it, got my DM to paint it, he was going put the moss on, but he said the moss was big and would look odd so we use it, so now it doesn't have moss, and that moss looks great

The dirty down effects get even better with a second pass of either more of the stuff or water, really helps to get deeper colors with more variation. Oh and where was the streaking grime? :D
I've been experimenting using stirland mud first then applying dirty down rust to it, again you get different results when applying it to textures, same with blood for the blood god, when put on top of stirland mud for example in aged weapon recesses it looks like aged, congealed blood, bleh :D
I will say with dirty downs ALWAYS heat the model and paint pot with a hair dryer before use make use it's warm to the touch and SHAKE THE LIVING DOOKIE OUT OF IT
Well Ciara according to what I read Orcs have red blood same as humans, even though their skins are green tinged and are meant to start from plant based organisms that grow and multiply over time. I like the spider effects and like you I had problems to start with but having read the instructions used water instead of paint thinner and way hay it worked great, so much so my weekly cleaner was forever thinking I had a spider infestation.
