    No one ever mentions the effect of grip strength on different shots. You are a brilliant teacher Mick and the best ever player I've seen on a bar table. Been watching you for over a decade and so glad I can now learn from you too. Your biggest fan all the way from South Africa.

    Thanks for the tip, now I know why the cue ball is not moving forward much when I apply top spin. best regards Tony from Bar8

    Great explanation, I struggle with rail shots due to the cue and object ball size difference! Find it harder then snooker and always seems to be on my mind as I'm playing the shot🙈

    Great stuff Mick. On your list of things to cover can you add getting position off balls that are hanging over pockets with distance between cue ball & object balls. It’s the most inconsistent part of my game. I mean balls that are more or less in the jaws & the cue ball is almost a table length away

      I find playing with a lot of top or bottom at pace on cue ball it can kill the cue ball (banana) unintentionally when you’re trying to come back down the table. (Not sure if that makes sense….. but I know what I mean😅)

      Dunno if it's the right way, but I usually play these with bottom and running side and hit it like half-ball to cheat the pocket a little. The bottom is to change the angle coming off the object ball so that the cue ball doesn't hit the jaw, and the side helps the cue ball go in that direction.

      @user-kx4fr4cb3y There are a few different options.
      @djirajpallin2572, I also like that shot (bottom with running side). Usually, though, I'd use that if I want to hug the cushion. Maybe to clear 2 pockets at once or to develop a ball on the cushion. If I was trying to get down the table, I think I'd use one of 3 options.
      1) Side. Usually running side to go round 2, 3, or maybe 4 cushions, but occasionally some check side if running is not an option. It all depends on the traffic.
      2) Screw/backspin (though probably not the length of the table away... unless you're feeling brave. 😂). If you can see enough of the object ball in the jaw, you can avoid the cushion altogether. Also, you can get some quite creative arcs by adjusting where you hit the object ball. This can help avoid other balls that might be in the way (or maybe even help with a cannon).
      3) Another shot I enjoy is hitting the cushion before the ball. If you hit it too far away from the ball, you'll still end up running into the far knuckle, so if you want to avoid the jaw, you need to hit the first cushion nearer to the object ball. I would only really do this when I haven't got much of an angle on the cue ball and if the object ball was the near side of the pocket, though you could play around with other scenarios. You also don't need a lot of pace with these shots as they tend to hit thin and keep most of the momentum.
      I'd recommend trying these shots out and experimenting with different spins. Maybe put one or 2 balls in the way and try to get around them.

    Am I right in thinking that the looser grip leads to a smoother and more constant speed of cue delivery, which in turn means the tip has slightly longer time in contact with the ball …? I guess if you have a tight grip you get more of a 'muscle action' which is more snatchy and tense than the kind of 'pendulum action' it feels like if you loosen the grip.

    Hi Mick, could you please do videos on playing the cue ball off a cushion with side & check side while potting a ball in the corner pocket.
    I find myself either decelerating and finishing short, or failing to put the required amount of side for position ony next ball.
    Many thanks...Nigel.

    Could we get a video on potting balls down the rails, particularly when using side for position as well?

    Nice one Mick. What tip do you use? I use Kamui SS as I feel it helps a lot with cue ball control. I usually advise people buying their first cue to take the tip off and replace it with something at least half decent. Perhaps you could cover this in a video for new starters.

      @@sideshowrob5453 I enjoy my Kamui. Too soft to break with so I use a very hard clear break tip from Cymru Cues that I have on another shaft. I'm sure the Kamui SuperSoft would mushroom very quickly with regular break shots.

    Why does 1:29 (side-on view) look like you've put no topspin on the object ball - more importantly, nowhere near the amount of topspin you've illustrated in the top left-hand corner?! Still, a great video highlighting the disproportions of the size of the cue ball to the object ball and the unexpected reactions. Thanks for sharing!

  • @apiyo_puzzles

    I'm not convinced the physical size of the cue ball is really that relevant. Weight seems to be the relevant factor. I suspect if the cue ball was smaller but the same weight as the object ball then you'd get more of less the same reaction as if they were the same size.

    • @onniroy4975
      @onniroy4975 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You should be convinced as it is basic physics. F=ma. Also just need to play with a same size cue ball vs standard size as Mick demonstrated.

    • @onniroy4975
      @onniroy4975 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also why you can screw the smaller cue ball back much easier than a same-size cue ball.

    • @apiyo_puzzles
      @apiyo_puzzles 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@onniroy4975 I'm not sure you've followed what I said. I'm saying that I think the effect we see from the small cue ball is a result of its lower weight, not its smaller size. We all know that the small white is heaps easier to screw and harder to follow. The question is why, and it doesn't seem obvious that the contact point betweens the two balls being below centre is the key factor, or a factor at all.
