But charging overnight is doable at pennies per day of full charging. Sleeping while the vehicle charges is acceptable.
One thing I like about hybrids is the "4th dimension transmission," as I call it. The engine can charge the battery while cruising and then when accelerating at a later time that power can be drawn upon so the engine doesn't have to rev up. I'm talking about all those routine acceleration from a stoplight to 30 mph. Big impact on MPG, afaik.
They honestly need to stop calling it a hybrid. This is built like a volt, which also stupidly called itself a hybrid. It is really series vs parallel hybrid, but the problem is hybrid = prius. I would market these cars as EVs with gas assist and range extension. A normal hybrid is a laggy gas engine with EV assist and no-instant torque, the opposite of what you want.
Good point, one possible future upgrade would be if there is the option to moving to new CVT Toyota Style transmission. Not the CVT bs as used by Nissan, but the planetary gear system with the dual electric motors used to control the Sun and Ring gear. Its a brilliant simple design for any Hybrids.

I love Sandy, but is this what the traditional auto industry think an electric future looks like…a 17 kw tiny battery glued to a Jeep? I am sure I am missing something that someone is going to tell me how brilliant this is.
@SciFi Author B.L. Alley Its been a while... What do the mice indicate? I have recently learned that a reservation can be changed by adding in new contact info.
Hmmm interesting. I would consider this car very seriously if it did like 50 miles on a charge. Good option for Europe as Cybertruck might not be available for long long time here.
I'm probably missing something, but if I were designing this, I'd want to replace the transmission with a generator, then use a separate motor to drive each wheel (like Rivian) powered from the battery and/or generator. Thus get rid of the driveshaft and differentials. Then also give the buyer the option to replace the engine and generator and radiator and gas tank and exhaust system with more battery modules ... making it an E-Jeep or a hybrid-Jeep. Bad idea?
someone said that car companies have to use the existing plant and machinery for making ICE cars to maximise the capital outlay first which includes lots of inventory and orders placed and this is the result, a combination of old/existing tech married to a little new tech. As time approaches to replace plant and machinery, totally dedicated design and manufacture of complete package EVs will take place, so in a nut shell, car manufactures need time to adjust to the new demands. Tesla was an EV manufacturer from the beginning so they had a big head start in that regard but not so in actually making them. Take what I said with a big pinch of salt.
You kinda need it though. Battery range sucks too much and weighs too much. You throw a lift and bigger tires on this with all EV and you’d get like 80 miles range
It is not complex at all and the electricity actually runs alot of the equipments that were usually connected to the engine with belts. The electric motor also replaces the starter....

It has been my understanding Sandy doesn’t care for hybrids.. Apparently Sandy is passionate about his Wrangler lol. For me, Chrysler and Jeep products are just absolute junk. Possibly the least reliable vehicles out there. Maybe some engineering focus on improving quality? Additionally, a 4Runners rear window is brilliant. The new Jeep design is cool tho.
Hybrid is a very misleading name for this. Most people hear hybrid and think slow laggy prius. Prius is a parallel hybrid and this jeep is a series hybrid like a chevy volt. A series hybrid should really be called an EV with gas assist/range extension. A series hybrid drives like an EV. It has instant torque even if the gas assist engine is running. It drives like an EV and any EV owner would enjoy it the same as any other EV. I drive a volt and chevy was stupid to cancel it while still selling ICE vehicles. Chevy should have made an SUV or truck with the volt drivetrain. That is what Jeep did here. They made a jeep that feels like an EV when you drive it, but can run on gas so you do not have to change your behavior as a jeep owner by planning around chargers. There are not many non-tesla chargers around, so going full EV would have hindered sales. This jeep is going to sell like crazy because instant torque makes an EV so much better to drive.
Wow for as much as they are supposed to know about this 4Xe… they still lacked a lot of info. Yes SAMSUNG developed the RESS and NO it couldn’t fit outside the vehicle. And yes it’s a prismatic cell it a pouch cell like LG…How do I know this… I was a Samsung engineer who worked on the development and production of this battery pack.
So, a couple weeks ago Sandy says hybrids are not the way to go - full electric is. Now Sandy is saying he may buy himself one of these Jeep hybrids. Huh?
The confusion is what a hybrid is. The traditional slow laggy prius is a parallel hybrid and those suck. This is a series hybrid where both the electric motor and gas engine can power the drivetrain at the same time. In the chevy volt, this means even when at zero charge and the gas engine is proving all the power, the car retains the feel of an EV with instant torque. This happens because even when the gas engine is running without any battery reserve, the gas engine is providing both torque to the drive shaft and generating electricity to power the electric motor. This jeep will feel like an EV even when the gas engine is running, thus any EV owner will enjoy driving it. They really shouldn't call this a hybrid because hybrid = prius in people's minds. They should call it an EV with gas assist. It is really a short range EV with a gas range extender. The only reason they tend to call these hybrid is because the gas engine can either generate electricity or directly provide torque to the drive shaft. For whatever reason, just because the gas engine will intelligently choose to generate power or generate torque depending on efficiency, these cars are labeled as hybrids when they drive and feel like EVs.
I tried to get a deal together on a 4XE Wrangler High Altitude trim level, no luck. Don't need the off road goodies as I'd be using it as my severe weather winter commuting vehicle. Looking forward to further videos on this, I'm amazed at this powertrain. Up here in Canada I'm still skeptical of BEV due to range issues with the cold. I hope they put this powertrain in their whole lineup.

Sorry for the loss of Mr. Ellis, my condolences to all his relatives, may the Lord give all of you the strength and guidance to face his loss. I remember his review of the Mach-E electric module some months ago, and he looked so good walking around the module giving his valuable opinions and ideas. We fans of Munro's will surely miss him, RIP Mr. Ellis.
Proposed Title Edit "My Wife's Not Gonna Like That."
MPGE is the most American measurement, even better than the football field🤣
It really is a truck, featuring live axles. I will be buying something with much less un-sprung weight.
I can dream of owning this in silver with the blue lettering. (75k!) 😵
Rest in peace Mark
The interior part that sandy was talking about is only on the Sky One-Touch top fyi.
Can't wait for the Cybertruck.
yeah... Feels like it's still 2 years out.
@@calholli if we’re lucky!
Any information about a full electric version?
Yes, 2027
Not anytime soon.
@@calholli doh!
I love Sandy, but is this what the traditional auto industry think an electric future looks like…a 17 kw tiny battery glued to a Jeep? I am sure I am missing something that someone is going to tell me how brilliant this is.
Sandy, I have a
Rivian Launch Edition reservation i may not go through with. Are you interested ?
@Author B.L. Alley no, not giving it away. I dnt even know the best way to go about it. Reservation is not directly transferable.
@SciFi Author B.L. Alley
Its been a while...
What do the mice indicate?
I have recently learned that a reservation can be changed by adding in new contact info.

Sandy, as a jeep owner what is your expert opinion of the death wobble causes and solutions and why it’s persisted for so long with Jeeps?
Garbage, engineering.
need to Teardown Jeep to 1st principles, then rebuild it, with a 100% electric ⚡ Drivetrain and big battery 🔋.
Blah blah Tesla blah
Oh, I would also use Gigacasting for both the FRONT and REAR end to save weight, stiffer frame and better NVH.
also better Repairability.
If they will sell you parts that is😬😤
Hmmm interesting. I would consider this car very seriously if it did like 50 miles on a charge. Good option for Europe as Cybertruck might not be available for long long time here.
With the price of gas in Europe no one there would even consider a Wrangler.
@@Resist4 that's why plugin is great deal. I could drive only electric for 80% of my journeys and that would make fuel efficiency non important.
Take what I said with a big pinch of salt.
can't help but see a lot of extra complexity due to keeping the gas engine around
but, it keeps gm and FORD in the BLACK, as they are able to REPAIR and fix , all those JEEP and BRONCO.
@@Story_Teller_Everyone that's only because it wasn't designed to be electric from the ground up. look up the rivian
@@EV3NTH888 I’m actually buying Rivian, on preorder. But if it was built like my Jeep it would still not get much range, and for rock crawling a built Jeep is pretty unbeatable.
Rest in peace Mr. Ellis
Noise for free!
I own Jeep Wrangler for the last 22 years (YJ 1993, JK 2007 Sahara, JKU 2012 Sahara) , and I can tell you that no Jeep Wrangler worth that kind of money... I always loved my Jeep, but I will never pay 70k for one (full electric or not). That is why I will keep my 2012 until the Cybertruck is available.
a full electric version may be.
@@cryan9376 At this price tag I want the cutting edge technology but still want to be able to smash big snowbank if I need to 😁 That's why it will be Cybertruck or keep my old jeep JKU 2012 untill it die!
Let us make it way more complicated, charge for two powertrains... more money & double maintenance
@@ryandoyle4344 its not more complicated, its not double maintenance, you're welcome. The generator basically replaces the starter, the water pump, HVAC compressor, power steering..... are all electric.
Obi-Wan is great, more of Mr. Oberholtzer on the channel please!
If you choke the engine the electric should get you out, neat!
Just enough batteries to have decent regenerative braking
Sandy I still think they put that hybrid with 21 miles just for the tax break. That I don’t like
Have you announced when you'll be taking the Southern Plaid Sojourn?
I was interested in this but then I saw the price.... This would make an interesting apocalypse vehicle; offroad, uses gas or electricity
You are better off with 100% electric ⚡ Drivetrain and battery, you can charge with a SOLAR array, no need for gas, FUEL ⛽ is DEAD in 2025 anyways.
21 miles not enough..lol but cool wrangler…25mile for Prius prime is barely enough for something half the wrangler’s weight..
Only 17k battery is OK ?
He drove a Wrangler when he was 16? Must have a very stressful life, the first Wrangler was from 1986.
Might not need a winch because it's electric and usually you need a winch because you get into too much mud
Huh?
Fan of jeeps just not the quality. Saw a new JL stock death wobble. Also, for that price I’ll go Bronco and I’ll be able to disconnect my sway bars on uneven ground unlike the Wrangler.
Wow....21 mile electric range out of a 17kWh battery....Underwhelming....and all for the low low discount price of $70k
Could get an R1T for that much
Submarine Commander Sandy
can't wait for batteries & drivers to get like 100x cheaper to upgrade the 35 years young not-a-jeep g-wagen with an e-drive over the transfer case pto. wife wants a tesla lol. real cybertruck it is.
Hell no Hybrid
Looks like a mess to me, but I guess it's functional and strong.
Dave kinda reminds me of Elon...lol
2 door Bronco?!
Sooooo complicated!
Sandy the foremost car engineer can only buy a car that his wife likes.
So much exposed parts underneath must be a problem off road and in creeks and a hell to keep clean.
SANDY does NOT need a winch , if he brings his Wife along ......... LOL.
