      He clearly likes his old one (I'm assuming a JK with 3.6 L V6), so what he seems to be saying is that the electric + 4cyl turbo performs off road as well as his old one. I'm not sure how that's a sick burn. Jeep folks typically like minimal changes (it's already good, leave it alone!) so I'm reading it as "yeap even though it's electric, it's still a Jeep (aka still great)".

      Reminds me of the time I leased a car in Wisconsin with intent to drive it to NJ while I was there for a project for 6 months. The dealer said this won't be "garaged" out of state, right. "No sir it won't be garaged out of state." It sat outside the plant or our apartment, never garaged. One time we had a rare, brutal snow storm. A factory worker, thinking he was doing us a favor, shoveled the car out including taking the steel snow shovel to the hood, roof and trunk. WTF!! The scratches were unbelievable. I let someone else turn it in to the dealer.

EDIT: they are now in full cell production of the 4680s out of their 10GWh per year "pilot" plant. Plenty for Model Y and Cybertruck until cell production in Texas and Berlin ramps up during next year. -all from the shareholder meeting.

    I think the power steering uses an electric motor to drive a pump and pressurize the system to drive a traditionally hydraulic steering box. Any time i move the wheel while parked i hear the pump run with a high pitch annoying whine up. Then as the pressure comes back up with not moving the wheel it slows back down and goes silent. No electronic adjustment, just a physical factory steering dampener that is pretty loose. I replaced mine with an 3 way adjustable that i reach under the front to dial a knob and can stiffen up to help with the wander on the highway.

      I traded 2nd gen volt for one and haven't looked back! The volt gas engine broke down from a clogged EGR valve with the gas engine barely having 15k miles on it after a miserable road trip through the mountains in the heat barely being able to keep highway speeds. Did the same trip in the 4xe and it didn't break a sweat. We'll see how the jeep 4 cyl does but at 8k miles on it already it runs great.

    • @charlesball6519
      @charlesball6519 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markplott4820 My parents have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Sport, with the 2.4L engine. Its actually not a bad engine. The 9 speed, ZF built, transmission is a bit annoying in the mountains, though. 4th and 5th gear are spaced so far apart that while in 4th you'll zoom right up the mountain, then it shifts into 5th and you lose speed, then it shifts back into 4th and you zoom up the mountain. I get tired of this, and put it in manual gear select mode and leave it in 4th while going up the mountain.
      Something this ZF 9 speed auto does is downshift when you have cruise turned on, going down a hill, but on a long enough hill it keeps downshifting until the engine is at 5000RPM, and suddenly you're accelerating again. Also recently found out that if you have cruise set to a particular speed, then you increase your speed, then take your foot off the gas, it downshifts to slow you back down to the set cruise speed.

    Does it feel like an EV with instant torque and no shifting? The volt was good because it was basically an EV with gas assist and range extension. So it felt like an EV with or without the gas engine helping.

    I have a question about the drive train in this Rubicon. We can see from this video that it is capable of electric-only propulsion - the electric motors can drive the wheels for a limited time (small battery, it's a hybrid).
    We didn't see you use the internal combustion engine on the Rubicon for propulsion. Is it correct to assume that there is a full mechanical drive train in the car that can also drive the wheels? Or is the ICE used as a generator to charge the battery?

    • @Wrkncacnter777
      @Wrkncacnter777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like most hybrid's it's a parallel hybrid, meaning that the electrical motor drives and is driven by the same gearbox and axles as the ICE engine. Series hybrids like you describe (driving a generator which charges the battery) do exist, like the BMW i3 Range Extender model which is a true series hybrid, and the original Chevy Volt where the ICE engine could only be directly coupled to the wheels at highway speeds under heavy load. But this is a standard Parallel unit.

      @@Wrkncacnter777 Thanks. Appreciate the clarification!
      This is what I expected. Stelantis, Chrysler, Jeep (whatever) has deep expertise in mechanical drive trains for off-roading. The Rubicon is probably the highest expression of this mechanical engineering art. I'm not surprised at all that they went with what they know.
      But... it's old tech. It's complex. It is going to generate plenty of maintenance costs. By *adding* electric drive components, complexity actually goes up.
      This type of vehicle can't be built with fewer assembly steps, fewer parts, higher reliability, or higher energy efficiency. It is, in other words, at the end of its developmental potential.
      Distributing power to wheels can be made much simpler and more effective with a pure electric drive train.
      In principle, a vehicle like the Cybertruck or the Rivian is both more producible *and* will deliver better traction control, better reliability, and higher energy efficiency with the added bonus of better rollover resistance. Whether the first generation of those products will exceed the traction control of the Rubicon - the beneficiary of many decades of refinement of its technology - remains to be seen. But I have no doubt that electric off-roading vehicles will achieve better off-roading results, in time.
      We are witnessing the end of an era in this Rubicon.

    I've always wondered about an series hybrid offroader that has 4 motors, one for each wheel, completely removing the transmission.
    No need for transmission, differential locking, no need for low range, you can do it all from the electric motors part. 2 inverters, 4 motors, have a ICE engine to act as a generator and a small battery just for emergencies.
