The real heroes are the porters. Notice how huge the packs are that they carry on their backs and shoulders and, yes, on their heads, yet how quickly, you can say effortlessly, they climb the trails. I bet you wouldn't hear any "Steve-like" panting out of them. :)
The other heroic sights are the beautiful scenery, for level after level, plus the determination and the joy of accomplishment of the climbers. And best of all are the teaser shots as the summit reveals itself. The way you reserved this hidden treat for us was very nicely handled, Steve.
How you're coping with altitude sickness shows in your face, Steve, around your eyes. At first, I thought it was simply bad lighting. You're a strong man to have made it through this.

ha! That's one of the first things I realized and my respect for them grew each day seeing what they are doing there (that's also why we loved calling them G-Fighters instead of porters). Trekkers like me go up there one time and celebrate the achievement while the porters are the true kili heroes. Our team was simply amazing and I hope to have captured that apart from my own story. Thank you so much for your nice words, that means a lot to me!

Bravo, bravo standing innovation congratulations. Very well filmed and edited. I saw Kilimanjaro 35 years ago from Moshi when my dad took us on a saffari with a Datsun that had only 20cm clearance. Overheated 4 times in Serengeti but the saffari was epic. When I saw the snow on Kilimanjaro I could not understand how it was possible to have snow at the equator. I was 5-6 year old at the time. May be one day I'll try to climb it. This documentary is a great inspiration. Thanks

    Dear Steve,
thank you so much for uploading this amazing video.
When I visited Amboseli/Kenya in 2003 I told my wife that I would like to hike Mt Kilimanjaro one day. Now, 15 years later, I have decided to do it. I will also walk the Lemosho Route end of January 2019. Just 2 months to go, and honestly I start getting a bit nervous. Videos like yours confirm that it was the right decision. I am aware that this will probably the hardest thing I have ever done, but I will be ready for this challenge. For preparation I am running, riding my MTB and hiking in the nearer area, wheras there are no mountains here. Thanks again!
    Karsten

Whoaaa!!! Kilimanjaro is a huge bucket list item for me. I've been across the Himalaya and the Andes but both by car. But I've always been fascinated by climbing two mountains: Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Fuji!
So I have watched a lot of documentaries about both of them and I must say that your video is one of the best ones out there when it comes to showing the details of the trek!

    • @BackPackerSteve

Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Fuji are two mountains I've climbed. Both of them were exhilarating experiences, each in it's own way. They are not really difficult to climb if your body can adjust to the heigth. But the last day on Mt. Kilimanjaro was tough. Invest in an extra acclimatation day and you will increase your chances of succeeding.

      "Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro ... "
This is an ignorantly titled video.
      It is not Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Kilima in Swahili means "mountain" ... so the title incorrectly translates as
      Mt. Mountain njaro.
      Kilimanjaro. translates as
      Mountain shining
In 1965 three of us climbed to Gilmans Point, up and down in two days ... for free.

I’m planning on doing this in 2020, exact timeframe depends on when I can get the time off. I’m shooting for end of August.

Excellent video, especially that you presented us the people "behind the scene" which made possible a normal being without any mountain experience, to climb to almost 6000m! I was mostly impressed by that GFighter; he was so dedicated to learn and work, that I'm sure he'll become a CEO guide in short time.

I did the 6 day machame route in october. The only symptoms I had was a little loss of appetite at lunch at lava tower, and a little bit of vomiting that next morning, but after breakfast that morning, felt great for the rest of the trip.

very detail journey, with so many climbers, how do they keep the trail free from trash?. I have seen other documentary on different routes, they sleep in wood cabins. So the chef, porters, cook etc are keeping the locals employed? From ecology point of view, wouldn't permanent wooden champs at different peaks better for the environment?

    • @BackPackerSteve
      @BackPackerSteve  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey - the huts are only on the Marangu route, which is the most popular of all routes. Trash in the camp is usually taken care of by the tour operators - beyond that it is everyones responsibility to take care of the environment and don't litter. There is a lot more work to do in educating people on this matter for sure as Kilimanjaro attracts a lot of people who aren't trekking regularly.

Congrats on your summit! Can you share some perspective and/or tips descending after reaching summit? How long does that take? Also, on the last night before you peaked, you mentioned that you took medicine - is this needed and/or necessary for altitude sickness??
