    Great video! Very informative and well made. I climbed Kilimanjaro in November. It rained for the first 2 days. While it was wet it made the experience unique. The rain invigorates you. You dont get tired. As you said there were hardly any crowds. Going in the raining seasons cost much less.

    Love the information given, with the exception of altitude sickness and its prevention. Although you say that it can effect anyone regardless of age and fitness level, you contradict your statement with saying that your eating and fitness regiment got you to the top in spite of the altitude sickness. If you are suffering from altitude sickness, being fit and healthy(diet) will not allow you to continue, or if you do, suffer consequences which can be lethal. If I do not take Diamox above 10,000 I cannot remain in altitude. I suggest that all do good research on altitude sickness and its related treatments.

    Summated Kilimanjaro in 2008. The two most important tips I can give you is to walk a lot of miles. If you can find bridges in your area with steep upgrades, walk them constantly with backpacks on. Also the idea of descending some days is a great idea as it will increase your red blood cells so you acclimate to the lesser oxygen at the high altitude. The view from the top is well worth the effort to getting there.

    Most of the advice here is excellent. I have a few issues. Firstly, I'm a Dr, trained in High Altitude Medicine & have summited, supporting groups, 3 times. I agree that the shortest Marangu route is not a good idea, as It doesn't allow enough acclimatisation time. My routes were the Rongai, Lemosho & Machame. My strongest objection is against over-hydration being necessary to prevent High-Altitude Pulmonary or Cerebral Oedema. On the contrary, it is renal shutdown, with fluid retention, that leads to these lung/brain oedema issues. Diamox works for most. It makes you pee at night, but this is a GOOD thing, not a problem, if you have a pee-bottle within your tent. I can't speak for the ladies on this.
    It's somewhat depressing that medical science mythology, gets so engraved & difficult to throw out.
    Anyway Steve, I'm not blaming you for following this "advice". We all need to be more sceptical about the Establishment "Science & Medicine Experts".

      For me I’m a woman and have hiked Mount Siguniang . The 4 sisters mountain multiple times. Peeing at night with out leaving your just take a suitable tupperware or similar container to pee in and empty it in the morning . Leaving the tent you get cold and its harder to fall back to sleep.

      Thank you for responding to this. I was shocked he was saying he and his guides advised against Diamox. People should talk to their doctors not some person on TH-cam

    Great video look forward to booking a KJ trip. Did Everest base camp on Dmox and worked great didn’t struggle at all. That said 100% agree you pee a lot at night potentially throwing off sleep.

    Steve! You gave up beer! For six months! You risked losing what makes you German.
    Thanks for this thorough summary of how to prepare for and successfully complete summiting Kilimanjaro. You put all the necessary points up front for anyone interested in this adventure, just as you did in the Colombia travel trips video. Also, nice to see you in a peaceful, relaxed indoor setting for a change.

    Thank you so much for your information, although I don’t think I will ever climb Kilimanjaro, I would like to climb more 4000 footers in my neighboring state of New Hampshire. And your information is very helpful about how to climb, clothes to wear and what medications to take. Thank you

    I have an old injury & high altitude sickness which prevent me from summiting to the top, do you know any helicopter tour package that fly up to the top? Thanks

    • @BackPackerSteve
      @BackPackerSteve  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, that's too bad - in that case your only option is to book a scenic flight to see the top. There are no helicopter tours as helicopters can't land/fly in this altitude.

    • @worldcitizeng6507
      @worldcitizeng6507 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your quick reply. What is a scenic flight? you mean it's for tourist who are not able to climb? or just a normal flight where you watch it outside the window?
      I visited the Grand Canyon in Jun this year, I felt my throat were very dry when I was walking, so I'm guessing I'm having altitude problems. Is there such thing as a package where climbers can just do a 2 days trek & turn around? Thanks

    • @BackPackerSteve
      @BackPackerSteve  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A scenic flight takes you close to the mountain to see it from a plane window. Kilimanjaro is a tough hike and I don't know of shorter tours personally...but there might be operators who do this.

      world citizen G The top of the Grand Canyon is at a relatively low altitude. You probably weren’t drinking enough water, especially if you were in the desert in June.
