Replacing the Throttle Sleeve and Cables on a 1986 Honda Rebel 250

  • In a previous video, when repairing the dual carburetors, one of the throttle cables fell apart. In this video, I replace the throttle sleeve (inside the grip) and cables. Along the way, I fabricate a new metal bracket to hold the cables in the (mostly) correct position. If I can fix it, so can you!
    I purchased the sleeve and cables on ebay. For the '86 Honda Rebel 250, you'll need a 7/8" 22mm throttle sleeve. Double-check your handlebar diameter in case they are not original.

    Hello my friend, thabks for the video. I need skme help 😢. I have a honda cbf 125 2022. The throttle tube and cables look basiclly the same as this lovely bike you have. I have the kill switch housing open and the 2 cables out of the old throttle tube. I have a new throttle tube being delievered soon. My worry is i wont be able to get the cables back into the throttle tube, any advice like can the cable length be adjusted anywhere? Thanks!

      I bought them off of eBay! Try searching for "7/8" 22mm Hand Grips Dual Cables Throttle Sleeve Tube For Rebel CMX250" - or maybe with some of those terms. I paid ~$11 USD for them

    Hey did you ever fix the blinking problem on your turn signals? Currently replaced mine but they don’t blink.

      My blinkers *mostly* work - when RPMs are higher. I'm still planning on fixing this in the coming weeks - but also debating whether to convert the turn signal bulbs to LED. Stay tuned!

    The screws on mine won't budge, is there a secret to getting them out? I don't want to strip them 2:20. It looks like you are exerting hardly any pressure.

      Hmm... mine weren't that tight. Perhaps try some penetrating oil and letting them sit for a while. It's important to use the correct sized Philips bit to ensure a tight/strong contact to the screw head. I have seen others try tightening the screw in addition to trying to loosen - any movement of the screw is good! If that doesn't work, an impact screw driver might do the trick?

    Do you have a link to the grips you got?

    • @ificanfixitsocanyou
      @ificanfixitsocanyou  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The grips came with the bike, I only replaced the throttle sleeve tube. I found the tube on eBay for $11. For my handlebars it's a "7/8" 22mm dual cable throttle sleeve tube" - using those search terms should help you find a similar listing. Good luck!

    Nice way to be resourceful, but mounting it to the diaphram of the carb is a bad idea.

      Not sure what you mean? The bracket I created was mounted in the same position as the original bracket, using the same mounting points. I do think I need to create a better bracket, as I don't really trust that plastic spacer I used! I'll have to work on my metal fabrication skills!

      @@ificanfixitsocanyou I'm saying that those bolts are for sealing the diaphragm on the carb. They shouldn't be ever shared and used to mount anything.

      I understand, and that makes sense. However, the parts diagram clearly shows that's how the bracket is mounted from the factory. www.hondapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/hon/5053e0cff870021c54be0de8/carburetor - in the top-right.

    Dude you're supposed to show us an easy way to change the throttle cable not to design a whole new one Bracket general

      Trust me, I wish it was easier! If the new cable was the same exact length, I would have been all set. But at least now I (and everyone watching!) know how to compensate for a shorter cable!

      he really is supposed to do it any certain way at all, i was disappointed for myself but glad it worked, I dont have the neccasary tools to cut the required metal for this fix but this video is 100% what youtube is supposed to be meant for, the man found way and decided to share it with us. Be thankful it isnt forgotten knowledge he alone benefited from.
