I mena it aint hard if you have a great rooster with them xD
But yea i do get the point ive raised many chicks without hens or roosters to feed/protect them and have a house full of cats. While most of the cats doesn't care about them my brothers cat was however a real hunter. Luckily the chicks grew up fast and strong so the cat stayed away fromthem once i released them in the coop ^^

Oh, my gosh - you're *so* right. The neighbors behind us keep six chickens. We see two or three different kinds of hawks keeping an eye on their place all the time. We feed birds and squirrels on our side and when the birds get real *quiet* real fast, we look "up" to see if another hawk is checking out the chickens. :)

I had a Brown Laying Hen as a pet a few years ago. Her owners left the hen and rooster to fend for them selves in the winter. It was-40 C and I wanted to check on them. Snow was about knee deep and I borrowed a snowmobile to go where they were. I got to a clearing where a beat up old holiday trailer was. Everything was snow covered and in the middle of pile of junk, a tarp was spread out. I lifted the tarp and 'Millie' flew right at me. It scared me for a moment . She landed on my arm and it easy to tell that she was distressed. I checked for the rooster and found that he was dead and more than likely , froze to death. I found a cardboard box and put Millie inside and then tied the box onto the snowmobile seat. Before I left, I wanted to see if there was chicken feed around. I looked in the trailer and I could see there was a full bag but the door was locked. I didnt care about the trailer or the people who owned it. All I knew was that there was a animal in distress and she needed help. I took great pleasure in kicking that door in. Millie stayed with me for 3 years. She was a constant joy for those 3 years and I am not ashamed to say I cried when she died. I still miss you Millie...

Most of that is normal chicken behavior. They all have their own personalities and they can be rather silly at times, but I think most people underestimate how smart and bold they can be. The movie Chicken Run is accurate to how chickens behave (other than the building stuff and complex planning part). They can recognize their names and you could train them to some extent, but they will still poke their beaks into places you may not want them to.

My dad and his family always kept a few chickens when he was growing up. One hand seemed particularly attached to my dad and would often jump up on his shoulder and ride around with him. My father was very bright and finished high school at age 16. As soon as he turned 17 his mother signed papers so that he could enter the service. When he came home on his first leave that chicken went crazy! She almost lost her mind running after my dad insisting on being on his shoulder or being carried . She even wanted to follow him into the house but that was a no no. My dad was not even the one who fed the chickens but this hen was so attached to him you can be sure chickens know one human from another and have varying degrees of feelings for them.

Chickens are better than TV. We really enjoy and laugh at ours. We have one called Momma’s Chicken cause she was raised by our Momma Turkey. I carry on conversations with a couple of the others. We took in a chicken a couple years ago and when we got with the former owner, found out she was around 16 yrs old, which is super old for a chicken. Highly intelligent creatures, which is something thats not thought about when it comes to chickens.

20 years back we lost one of our mother hen and all her chicks except one to seasonal flu. She was too sick but somehow made it through. As all other surviving adults were quite aggresive to this tiny tot me and my sister decided to adopt her and she started living with us. A chicken too can be so loving and faithful we could never have understood if it wasnt for this encounter because usually we just raise them for our own consumption. It followed us everywhere and also to the dining table and sat quitely beside us as we had our food knowing she will also get her share. She grew up to be quite bossy though as she made all other chickens in our home be known that she is the masters pet. She soon had her own family and grew to be overprotective mom. Unfortunately we lost her to the seasonal flu a year or two later.

When I was 9 years old, I found a wounded baby chick on a trash can by my school. I took the bird with me, fed it, cleaned it up, and played with it for a couple days but my parents wouldn’t let me keep it. After 3 days or so I went to school as normal and when I came back the chick was gone, turns out my parents had given it away to a Neighbour two houses down. I heard the little peep peep a couple minutes after asking, to this day I do not know how, I figured maybe he saw me walking to my house, because he followed me and next thing I know he’s right next to me on the floor. I was so happy, that was probably the first time I realize how smart they were. At the time I had no idea but now I figured maybe he had imprinted on me and thought I was it’s mom. A couple of days later my parents permanently gave him away. I made them promise me the new fam would take care of it. Sadly, we didn’t have a back yard. I’m pretty sure he got eaten when he grew up, but to this day I hold him so dear to my heart. They’re so smart it’s crazy.
