I kinda disagree with the core premise of the video, that this is particularly surprising. Bayern Munich are one of the most successful and popular teams ever, one of the wealthiest (from what i remember i think they had the third highest valuation of any football club), located in an incredibly wealthy country absolutely fanatical about football with decades of history behind them. The only thing that might be surprising is that they're not behind Real Madrid
Furthermore, Adidas has supplied Bayern's kit since the mid-1960s. It is the longest kit-club partnership in Association Football history. The only club in Europe that has gotten close to this is PSG, which has been supplied by Nike since 1989.
@@toastedt140 Bayern is not immune to controversy, there was the Kirch Media collapse of 2002 which was Germany's answer to the ITV Digital collapse of the same year, which nearly bankrupted the entire Bundesliga, and Bayern was at the centre of it because they claimed the deal was a good idea. Spoilers, it led to Bayern loaning 2 Million Euros to Borussia Dortmund to prevent Borussia from collapsing into administration. Then there was the time when Uli Holliness was arrested for dodgy accounting practices, and the time when they worked with the Qatari government on numerous occasions. And the insurance scandal during the construction of the Allianz Arena. Being an overseas Bayern Fan isn't all sunshine and rainbows my comrade.
The DFB Germany shirts are also the most sold ones amongst the national teams. The market for these jersey are extremely profitable. Some years ago Nike approached the DFB to be their kit provider laying a huge sum on the table. As far as I can remember they outbid Adidas by quite a margin. In the end the DFB still opted for Adidas since they have a really close relationship. Of course many raised the question how the DFB even could have considered Nike since Adidas is a huge sportswear brand from Germany. The story about Adidas and their sports marketing in general is pretty fascinating. Just look up some documentaries about them.
Bayern is a traditional power house with deep and developed fan base. Bayern won UCL three years in a row back in the 70s before FC Barcelona even got famous. Bayern had players like Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller that were the best in the world
It makes sense from a Marketing point of view. Bayern Munich is well-run and internationally successful, arguably a top 3 Club worldwide and thus highly visible. They preserve a great deal of brand/club identity and care for stylish design of their products. Speaking of identity, Bavaria is the first thing that pops into mind when you ask people about Germany. Octoberfest, Cars, Fairytale castles and Bayern Munich.
Bavaria being the first thing that pops into mind when talking about Germany is an exaggeration. Plenty of people will think of Berlin and old Prussia more generally, lots will think of the financial districts in Frankfurt, plenty will think of the old industrial Ruhrland. Fairy tale castles aren't particularly associated with Bavaria; Hohenzollern castle is up near Berlin, Heidelberg is in Baden-Wuerttemberg and so on. It's a similar case for cars; Volkswagen is headquartered in Niedersachsen and both Mercedes and Porsche in Baden-Wuerttemberg
@@epicmarschmallow5049 Sure, Germany is way more than Bavaria, but that is besides the point here. Ask anyone outside of Europe what they associate with Germany and in 9 out of 10 cases the first answer will be an image closely linked to Bavaria. It'll always be Neuschwanstein castle and not Hohenzollern because of Disney. Bavaria made it into popular culture, is very distinct and marketed itself the best.
@@epicmarschmallow5049 I don't think so. People outside of Germany generally don't know about things like Prussia, financial Districts of Frankfurt or the Ruhr area. Bavaria is the most culturally rich region of Germany
I started a Bayern Fan Club in the US and was very surprised by how much support they give you. Once you become official, you receive certain perks you can share with your club such as discounts or pre-sales and they have a dedicated team online to help you. The support is even more surprising when you hear that they have the most fan clubs in the world. That effort is definitely worth it though cause I don’t even want to know how much I’ve bought from their store haha
I went to LA(Hollywood), the Bayern fan club is huge there( Bayern's nickname is FC Hollywood). If they put up for sale like the EPL clubs, plenty of billionaires will be bidding to buy Bayern due to their US Fanbase alone.
@Kaur Shaijal You will be surprised. Bayern is huge in USA. They are known as FC Hollywood. They are missing out a good chance to be owned by billionaires
@@sivaramlord9151 "Missing out" lmao. On what are they missing out? Selling their soul? There are more important things than money. Giving members the right to vote for example. Good analysis. I might also add that Bayern Munich's fans are traditionally loyal old and authentic fans, rather than the occasional glory hunter, superstar player-following plastic fanboys that plague the fanbases of other big clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG.
You must be daft. If that was the case your numbers would not triple in less than a decade. The only reason they did is because of recent success which means the "occasional glory hunter, superstar player-following plastic fanboys" are to credit for that 🤭
2:54 as an American, seeing that bayern has the most fan clubs in North America is not that surprising to me. Bayern deals with teams like FC Dallas, so it helps us get exposure to Europe and help them get exposure in North America
I was lucky enough seeing Bundesliga matches when I got home from college classes before streaming bundles became more widespread. And I am still unable to see New England Revolutions matches.
It's pretty surprising from the standpoint that United is definitely more popular in terms of fans at least in the US. Liverpool very likely as well. Their matches are even on major network TV for free each weekend.
Let’s face it, most people support football teams either due to regionalism or glory. With football being global there are more people supporting teams because they win and Bayern ALWAYS win.
The other factors do play a role as well though like keeping the same players for a long time and having a clear and unique identity and culture. I think a lot of football clubs have no real identity.
people think the premier league is the only top league with stars but bayern have had robben, ribery, schweinsteiger, müller, levandowski, neuer, mathäus, kahn, lizerazu and many many more . so many world cup winners and should-be-ballon dor winners (ribery was robbed, lewandowski was robbed...) so this does not surprise me at all

There's actually a case study calling out these "shirt sales" numbers as to being kinda misleading. Truth be told, the real numbers are a well-kept secret between brands and clubs - specially done for deal negotiation purposes. Blogs like LaCasaca (Argentine-based shirt blog) always speak against taking these rankings literally. Edit: changed my wording😅
Bayern is becoming a large brand in China, you can find Bayern fan club in almost every major city, this kind of fan culture really helps Bayern to sell more shirts. Last time Bayern went on a China tour, It was like a big festival, fans were just crazy, you could hear scream every time a player showed up, and it was extremely hard to get a ticket, because all tickets were sold out immediately. Finally Bayern earned 10M in nine days.
As an American who is huge into MLS it's really cool to have a channel that explains the much larger European side of football without melting my brain
The reason why Real Madrid was even maintaining its success since 2001 is that the City of Madrid bought the training ground for 290 million pounds (in 2001). Which would probably equal around 1 billion (incl. inflation) in 2023. With taxpayer ‘s money to keep the club alive. Think about it. Premier League clubs lives off big investment groups & billionaires for more than 20 years. Bayern Munich is the only club that didn’t let big investors in (which control the club) and also didn’t participate in illegal practices (like Juventus Turin). I’m by no means a Bayern Munich fanboy. But given their success in relation to their resources and the efficient management over decades, it’s the best team in the world. By far. It’s a self-made success story. Bayern Munich is also selling so much shirts, because the club hasn’t sold its soul, yet. Any other top team has. They only went for the money.
Even Dortmund sells more than any Serie A Club, except Juventus and more than the most Prem teams or Spanish teams... and Dortmund has only won 2 DFB Cups in the last 11 Years...
Which isn't a good reason. Dortmund sells more tickets than bayern munich every single game because their stadium is simply bigger. Even so, they only have about 1/3 as many sales as bayern
I'm Chelsea fans, have 2 Bayern shirts. Easy, one they have nice shirt, always look good and when ever you go to adidas store they have Bayern shirt but for other team, sometimes "its sold out".
Excellent analysis. As a Canadian with two Bayern kits (one for me, one for my one year old), this makes complete sense. What I hadn't realized was that German companies owned a significant stake in the club, so yeah no wonder Adidas wants to sell more Bayern kits - they get a piece of that action every sale.
yeah but bayern needs the money more, if they want to be competetive, because they are not owned. So they have to make as much money as possible and kits are most efficel
Jerseys that don't meet the quality standards are sold in developing countries by the kilo, often they don't have any substantial defects, that is what u probably saw
Manchester United has the potential to top some of these metrics, it's unfortunate the glazers don't know how to get the best out of this club on the pitch to translate into financial hegemony off of it

A little but important detail is that their alliance with Adidas gives Bayern the latest designs and technology, giving an extra appeal to their shirt. Also their design is pretty flexible, which makes feel their shirt new every year and gives both the lifelong fan and the new one reasons to buy they new shirt. They can wear plain red, red with white stripes, vertical stripes one year and horizontal the next one, red with blue stripes..... Other popular clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool or Real Madrid would neve allow such radical changes in their beloved shirts.
@@aqx1545 yeah, they play with those 3 colors as they feel (those are the colors of their crest), but red is like the most popular, probably because it was their main color back in the days of Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller, Sepp Maier and that fantastic team of the 1970s that won 3 champions cup (currently champions league) titles in a row.
Will be good to see the figures from this season. Obviously we won't be challenging any of those elite clubs in any way, but Ipswich have sold an insane number of shirts this season. The Ed Sheeran sponsorship has made all three lovely kits desirable for non-football fans, plus the Town fanbase is rejuvenated by the new ownership. A stark contrast to the Evans era. Obviously it is partisan, but our CEO indicated we have sold considerably more shirts than some Premier League teams. Exciting times on and off the pitch. COYB
Willing to bet it's due to availability. NB shirts were hard to find in my country. Only place to get one was the NB store and those were only on a few select shopping centers. Nike came along and at first you couldn't get one the pandemic then the flood gates opened.
Not really. They were in 3 out of the 4 last UCL Finals, won the UCL in 2019 and won the Premier League in 2020. But look at Dortmund, they rushed on to this list out of nothing. They are the only Team on that List, that has not won their league in the past 10 years. And they still sell more than City, PSG and nearly as much, as the UCL winner of 2021
Bayern Munich has sponsored American club teams as well that have wider reach. Sometime during their dominant run they sponsored our team and provided all of our kits, which were just their kits. Home, away, practice, and third kits. It was awesome I still have my away kit
In my country they have many factory's that make football jersys. There is a factory that makes real Madrid shirts. My friedpnd works their and sold me one for the equivalent of 1 us doller. The markup is insane.
I think it's safe to say that, while other clubs may have brighter and more infamous superstars, bayern has the upper hand when it comes to the sheer volume of world-class, recognizable players on their team sheets over the years. Playing for bayern has become virtually a required stepping stone for moving out of germany whilst also being the club everyone in germany plays for when they start showing promise. Players like Haaland are the rare exception who explode onto the football scene so violently that they are able to leapfrog the "bayern" stage of their careers, and even Haaland was at one point rumored to be considering playing for them anyway. If anyone within the German world of influence (austria, poland, denmark, all countries in Africa who were formally German colonies, Japan, even france to an extent) is good at football, the big goal for them is to play for bayern, because once you've done that, you are guaranteed to have the attention of the rest of Europe.

We, the local fans club, just organized the party, and the official offer the gifts. So far the China office will organize many different event in the big city for the Bayern fans. I thought they did great jobs to increase the club influence.
What’s surprising about this for me is that it’s not super easy to find a Bayern shirt outside of Munich or any other major German city. I’m in Germany just about every summer and I try to always get a new shirt each season and when I’m in Rhineland Pfalz I have a lot of trouble finding anywhere that sells them. I did find a fan shop in Berlin but they closed that year (luckily was able to nab a Sane kit for €35). You can find them in the main airports and some apparel stores but that’s it. In North America the only place I’ve found a Bayern shirt is at the adidas store in NYC.
In Germany every region beyond Bavaria has their own clubs. So it's not even common to be Bayern Fan there. (Of course you would find FEW Bayern Fans EVERYWHERE). But the shops wouldn't sell anything. In Rheinland-Pfalz more present probably are Mainz 05 and Kaiserslautern
But you also have to consider that in Germany friendship or enmity between clubs plays a major role. And since the clubs also represent their city, you won't find Bayern jerseys in most big cities. Who in Dortmund, Stuttgart, Schalke, Mainz, Frankfurt should want a Bayern shirt. There are Bayern fans everywhere in Germany, but they just order it online. It just wouldn't be worth opening stores because there aren't enough in other cities.
Interesting, I guess I'm part of that statistic as having brought a Bayern shirt recently, and it being my first also. I've been reluctant to support Bayern for a very long time, but since my club either struggles to get into or challenge for the Champions League, I decided to support Bayern as my team of choice in the Champions League if my favourite team doesn't get in. I don't really care about the Bundesliga as I only support them for the Champions League, and even though they hadn't won the competition for many years prior to me buying the shirt, I always thought they will eventually win it again. Funnily enough they went and won it the following year.
Another reason can be Home or away games Bayern fans pack the stadium up every time They have the most average attendance in the world furthermore increasing their shirt sales

Its really not something impossible for teams like tottenham .You just need a good board, and there is no need to pay hundreds of millions of money for that. What Mancity did for success was hiring pep, Liverpool hired Klopp and Manunited was sleeping. Thats why things are as they are. Believe me tottenham can do that too.

@dr3d180 In comparison to every other big club, they've done a good job of avoiding controversy.
For me, a Bayern fan in Munich, this is extremely surprising.
I have also a registered official fan club in the Gambia, FC Bayern is a well organized football club, highly connected with their fans.
They are definetly top 3...arguably 2nd best Club in the history
They're literally co-owned by Adidas. That's the reason for their shirt sales, and every Adidas shop sells them.
@@epicmarschmallow5049 I don't think so. People outside of Germany generally don't know about things like Prussia, financial Districts of Frankfurt or the Ruhr area. Bavaria is the most culturally rich region of Germany

It helps that Adidas makes their kits. Adidas always makes great kits for their big clubs.
Bayern has one of the highest ticket sales of all the clubs for their games consistently Germans take their football very seriously
Which isn't a good reason. Dortmund sells more tickets than bayern munich every single game because their stadium is simply bigger. Even so, they only have about 1/3 as many sales as bayern
Bayern is the last major club with an intact soul.
A club not kneeling to players, and for the most part doing the right thing. A Hometown Club
Well, but addidas also produces all the jerseys. So they get more money anyway if more is sold.
North America is not surprising. We have a large German population. In the Midwest there are towns with German signs still
Very true I’m from Texas and my very first jersey was the 2015 Bayern home jersey and still own it
I was in Israel in 1997 and saw someone in a Wycombe Wanderers shirt. I was so shocked that I still remember it.
Jerseys that don't meet the quality standards are sold in developing countries by the kilo, often they don't have any substantial defects, that is what u probably saw
Manchester United has the potential to top some of these metrics, it's unfortunate the glazers don't know how to get the best out of this club on the pitch to translate into financial hegemony off of it
Well they got the best out of the club, the money.
I'm a fan since 29 years now. Bayern till death. I really love my home club and I'm proud for all the history, loyality and glory. But no matter if we win or lose: I will always stand for our colours!
Munich's real love connected with our brothers and sisters all over the world 🤍❤
A little but important detail is that their alliance with Adidas gives Bayern the latest designs and technology, giving an extra appeal to their shirt.
When I younger I never knew what there home shirt colour was because sometimes I saw white, blue or red
COYB
Crazy to also see Liverpool's massive rise as well
Willing to bet it's due to availability.
Honestly they are probably the best run big club in the world
I'm the fans lived in Canton China. I should told you that 2020 CL finale wasn't organized by official (FCBayern China office).
Another reason can be Home or away games Bayern fans pack the stadium up every time
They have the most average attendance in the world furthermore increasing their shirt sales

I wish we could see more german teams rise to glory. Maybe the league doesn't have the appeal it should because one team always dominates.
I get the script of the video, but Bayern is one of the most successful clubs in the world, and they have the most fan clubs worldwide, more than any other club
Please make video on jack grealish current performance in man city shirt and what factors makes the current main man in the team either defence or attack
THE T.. LOGO / .T.. IS JUST AWESOME THATS THE REASON.
That "T.." logo is a telecommunication company known as "Deutsche Telekom".
Even tho Audi is a Bavarian car manufacturer, still find it weird to see them instead of BMW, which have the emblem designed by the Bavarian flag.
So a major answer… is their equity holders just like so many other mega clubs.
Yea yea yea… not exactly the same, but their equity holders benefit them.
I bought last season's Bayern shirt for my collection. It was really nice .
Impressive review 👏
Not surprised to see Adidas main clubs on top, but very interesting video, thank you
